Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 28 - DB episode 126-130 (CURRENT WEEK)

Overall I find Mr. Popo to be really frustrating as a teacher. He's attempting to teach Goku about ki control and how to sense it in others, but it's staggeringly clear that Goku has no idea what he's talking about. Instead of berating Goku for not doing it, Popo should instead do what Gohan did wi...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 28 - DB episode 126-130 (CURRENT WEEK)

- Isn't it awfully convenient that Majunior would wait for the next TB to kill Goku? - And WHY doesn't suicide work exactly?? Thanks for telling us! Piccolo's power probably took three years to get to the point where he could face Goku. Also, as long as Goku is up in God's realm Piccolo would be un...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 28 - DB episode 126-130 (CURRENT WEEK)

Episode 126 I like how God has a bit of a sinister edge to him. It makes sense that someone that powerful and mysterious would carry that vibe. Of course part of the reason for it is because he shares Piccolo's looks and voice. Those scenes at Kame House were great. The artwork, direction, music, a...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I haven't seen the show, but based on your description, it seems that Diane's race does in fact have something to do with her character. Her name, appearance, a trip to Vietnam. Those are all aspects of race and ethnicity. I thoroughly explain how race does not factor into Diane's character, and yo...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

There's been a big hooplah about the VO of Diane from Bojack Horseman being white while the character of Diane is Vietnamese. I contend that if we were speaking of a character from the Boondocks, where not only is the cast majority black but the show itself is a direct commentary on the experience ...

Re: Most underwhelming character death in the franchise?

I liked Kibito's death because it served its purpose. We didn't really need to know any more about him.

The Dragon Team's deaths in the Boo Saga were underwhelming, mostly because Toriyama didn't care anymore and wasn't trying.

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

White actors voicing Black characters is the opposite of minority progression. There's no "double standard" here. Or at least not one that matters. All double standards matter. And that's not the opposite of progression. That's literally just someone getting the job because they're qualified for it...

Re: How would you have handled the Garlic Jr. arc?

Ditch the Maron subplot as besides being annoying, it takes significance away from the #18 story later on. Have Garlic Junior revive Garlic Senior and they team up against everybody. Or instead, have it so Garlic Junior secretly sired a child in the past. Gohan befriends Garlic III and they bond ove...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

3. A White actor playing a Black character? Yikes. A Black actor playing a White character? Cool by me, as I previously mentioned in the thread. The 'White victim of minority progression' narrative is creepy as fuck. Not sure what the bolded means, but this whole statement is a double-standard. Whi...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 27 - DB episode 121-125 (CURRENT WEEK)

I like how God's background mirrors Goku's, with him having been a martial artist who sought out the previous God. It's interesting to imagine what his life had been like prior to his ascent. Also interesting that God chooses Goku to succeed him later on. [*]Notably, the anime depicts much more of M...

Re: Dragon Ball Rewatch, Week 27 - DB episode 121-125 (CURRENT WEEK)

Episode 121 This must have been a fun episode to record with Nozawa and Aono going back and forth at each other. It's a fun fight to watch. It's also interesting to watch because of the size difference between Goku and Daimao. I imagine fighting in such a way has its advantages and disadvantages. P...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

- Yeah, I agree that there are objective standards of quality. Determining the "metrics" is dependent upon which aspects you are trying to measure. For the more technical aspects of a work, those who study film/television would likely learn such metrics in an academic or professional setting. For th...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I don't really know what to tell you but..like, maybe talk to more black people? This is much more like it. The more and more people you talk with, the greater the understanding you will have. Personal experiences count for a whole lot. It's also important to keep things in perspective. I apologize...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I mean look, if you want to be pedantic about it, then do you; but it's probably a probably a good idea to take the word of a black person with a lifetime of experience interacting with black people and knowing black history. With a grain of salt, maybe, because you're still just one person. There ...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

When 99% of black people will tell you don't waste your time saying African-American except when absolutely necessary...well, pretty open and shut case there. That's if you could ever hit this elusive "99%" mark. Sure, if someone could realistically obtain a majority opinion on the matter, then go ...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

But is opera or Shakespeare really considered "art" to begin with? I'm baffled that this is such a point of contention. Art is not like math or science. If a story isn't structurally sound, it can still work on an audience emotionally. If a building isn't structurally sound - people get hurt or wors...

Re: Lunch / Launch

I don't know if it's ever been stated where Funimation got "Launch" from, but I suppose it is possible someone was a fan of Space Nuts . I used to think maybe it was because of her propensity for firearms, and because it might sound "hardcore". ランチ ranchi can be translated as both "lunch" and "launc...

Re: The hills we choose to die on and the fights we battle for when it comes to Dragon Ball

Isn't it possible to be both objective and subjective at the same time? Objectivity doesn't necessarily preclude subjectivity. If we're going to define commercial film and television as "art", then isn't it all the more likely that a series is and can be viewed objectively? Show me a film review tha...

I'm not so sure anyone can be presumed an "expert" in such matters. Even if so, different "experts" will offer different answers. You won't necessarily hear the same thing from everyone. You should never stop thinking and learning on your own. I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here. I t...
