Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

His origin is functionally identical to the original but, in my opinion, is far less interesting and dramatic. They were moody and ugly. The image of Broly and Paragus dying on a trash heap has always stuck with me. They said so much with very little. His trauma is played for sympathy, but being sy...

Re: Official On-Going Dragon Ball Super Movie Thread: "Broly"

Now the post movie hype has died, what is everyone's opinions on Broly:BR? Watched the movie not long ago. First time I've ever watched anything Super. It was OK. Broly is a wholly sympathetic character now. The question is, does that actually make him a deeper character? I think that this new vers...

Re: Should fans write for official products ?

You just have to look at American comics to see how that plays out. It can lead to amazing work and it can lead to fanwanking. Too often it plays out as one writer just undoing all the things they didn't like about a previous writer's work. A writer of anything already established should be enough o...

Re: Manga censorship

I bought most of my volumes of Dragon Ball 15+ years ago and the art censorship is minimal. Middle fingers, nipples, all that good stuff. It gets distracting when I switch to the Vizbigs for Z and the censorship is so obvious. Yeah they're just little things and they shouldn't matter but they do, it...

Re: Your ideal Dragon Ball sequel.

To me, the most effective note GT hits is melancholy. There's a sense of sadness that the journey is ending, that these people are aging and moving into the final stages of their life, and that this special thing they've been a part of is just about over. I especially like the idea of Goku becoming ...

Re: What exactly makes a satisfying ending?

To me the Boo arc was always the natural finale to me. Obviously I never read/saw it without knowing it was the last arc, but still. The stakes were higher than ever, almost every single character died, the Earth was destroyed, Vegeta's arc was finally resolved, Gohan's arc was finally resolved (ev...

Re: What exactly makes a satisfying ending?

I think EoZ is a perfect ending and apparently I'm the only person in the universe who feels that way. I think the reason a lot of fans don't like EOZ (I didn't for awhile) is because of how out of nowhere it comes from. There's no build up to it or hints about it, it just happens and the story end...

Re: What exactly makes a satisfying ending?

I would say the biggest thing is the ending not making what we've been reading/watching a waste of time. See Game of Thrones for an example of that one.

But I really don't know, because I think EoZ is a perfect ending and apparently I'm the only person in the universe who feels that way.

Re: Super Saiyan 2 Appreciation Thread

I don't know if it was supposed to be SSJ2 (it sure was in the game itself) or if it was just an off-model SSJ that looked like it, but I loved how it looked on the Hyper Dimension boxart.

Re: What fans want VS real-life released products.

The idea that the movies were written specifically to provide villains for the video games seems like a pretty massive stretch. Surely it would be cheaper just to create villains for the videogames from scratch, rather than spending the time and money to make a movie starring said villain just to ma...

Re: How did you come to know about dragonball?

I watched the BLT dub in 1995 before it just disappeared. I never remembered the name of the show and any time something anime aired I thought that was it. I was resigned to never knowing what it was for four years until some kids at school started watching DBZ. I thought the protagonist looked fami...

I didn't have an itch. To me Chapter 519 closed the book and it never needed to be opened again.

Re: Toei was at their best when they did their own thing

Kind of? I do love the direction Toei took with stuff out in space involving the Saiyans and Freeza's army. The Bardock special of course, but other bits of filler as well. However, when they were trying to expand on and replicate the closer to home Dragon Ball stuff most of it fell totally flat to ...

Re: SSG or SSJ4

Matches Malone beat me to it. SS3, just like the "grade" variants, were intended to be red herrings. Like almost any busy or overly bulky form Toriyama makes, they were specifically designed to contrast with more effective alternatives in their introductory story arcs. 3 also enhanced a lot of the ...

Re: Why wasn't Raditz voiced by Masako Nozawa?

I've always assumed it's because Raditz' identity is a plot twist and Nozawa would give it away.

I also think it's why Trunks is voiced by Takeshi Kusao instead of Ryō Horikawa.

Re: Another omg Goku is voiced by a woman in Japanese discussion

I think context is the key. To the Japanese audience, Goku was basically Bart SImpson. As in, he was introduced as a child. And in Japan as in America young boys are usually voiced by women. So for years that child's voice was associated with the character. Then the character grew up and they kept t...

Re: Why Does everyone Take Dragon Ball So Seriously?

Depends on what axis you're talking about. I love Dragon Ball (the manga) and view it as an imperfect yet brilliant comic book. I take Toriyama seriously as an artist, and embrace his eccentricities. I care a lot about this story. At the same time, I am bewildered by how much arguing there is over p...

Re: "Dragon Ball FighterZ" Official Discussion Thread

FighterZ doesn't have more sales than Xenoverse 2, not yet at least. Also pretty sure Mortal Kombat is a juggernaut in terms of sales, MKX has at least 3.5 times the sales of FighterZ in steam. Last figures for Tekken 7 were at 2.5M the same as FighterZ so even if the latter is ahead it shouldn't b...
