Re: Why did Toei hire Yamamoto for Kai in the first place?

I mean maybe it was just easier to have the guy you already have instead of hiring another one. Solid State Scouter was plagiarized and Kenji didn't create it. Everyone during production knew that SSS wasn't ever meant to be original, even the very title is a reference to an album called "Solid Sta...

You do realize that the Shippūden movies (non-canon much like the DBZ ones are, who would’ve thought) have a completely different OST from the show (and from each other) in all entries of them right?

Cap Sora said it all Also, this of "Movies Ost >>>> Anime Ost" also happens with Akihito Tokunaga and Norihito Sumitomo Compare Tokunaga's "Path to Power" ost to his "GT anime" ost, and Sumitomo's "DBS Broly" ost to his "DBS anime" ost. At this point I understand now that it’s more a fault of Toei‘...

Re: Why did Toei hire Yamamoto for Kai in the first place?

I think that Kai was made after Toei started taking the dub seriously. They probably thought that Yamamoto's more electronic sound was good for the Western audience but also balanced enough to keep the Japanese audience happy with its use of more theatrical sound similar to Kikuchi. It's also very ...

they shouldn't have started doing it too.
Fun fact, even in 90’s anime that were pretty much Japan-only, some shows would have Engrish covers of their OP and ED songs done for their shows (probably as a joke or something) even without an international audience.

Re: Any DB character themes that are as prominent as Piccolo’s from the original?

Also, actually insert songs (that aren't OP themes) can also be used as motifs too actually, this happened with "Blizzard" (Daichi Miura) in DBS Broly, two instrumental versions of the song were used, in the Gogeta fight and in the ending of the movie. "Pledge of Z" (Momoiro Clover Z)" from Fukkats...

Re: Any DB character themes that are as prominent as Piccolo’s from the original?

You are right, "Saiyan Blood" despite being sung by Vegeta's voice actor and its lyrics being about Vegeta, it isn't a Vegeta's theme. Despite "Solid State Scouter" being played in two moments where Bardock is being badass and it going down as being acknowledged or at least related to Bardock chara...

It honestly really annoys me that Toei brought in Kenji Yamamoto for Kai instead of getting Akihito Tokunaga (who composed GT).
And the rest is history. Biggest blunder in OST choices, bar none.

Re: What would Norihito Sumitomo’s weakest tracks be?

But really, when even video games and side OAVs like Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans from Raging Blast 2 or the recent promo anime Super DB Heroes have better music than the major series... Yeah, that has always been rather strange. Don’t know what kind of directors they place in each one. Inco...

Early DB/Saiyan saga is very 80s anime aesthetically
If we’re going by the likes of FotNS, Saint Seiya, Bubblegum Crisis, and other popular material of that time, it really doesn’t share many elements with them.

Re: The original DB Manga and anime adaptations don’t reflect their era much

I disagree, there's a lot of the style that feels very 80s to me, like the design of Bulma's inventions or the type of technology in Kame House like the TV and VCR. Stuff like that was of course considered modern back when they were written and animated, but today it's wonderfully retro. Similarly,...

The original DB Manga and anime adaptations don’t reflect their era much

Any view on this can go either way, but I think that as a result of how different it is from a lot of concurrent media to it, there isn’t much besides production and air dates that link it to either the 80’s or 90’s time period. This could be because of references to older periods, or some other aes...

Re: What would Norihito Sumitomo’s weakest tracks be?

Why they hired Sumitomo in the first place? Yasuharu Takanashi would probably have been a much better fit than him since it’s a martial arts show we’re talking about. But it’s Toei, for every step forward they take, it’s two or three steps backwards. For example new works of Saint Seyia no longer u...

A lot of these subjects are video-worthy if they don’t have one already. It would be about time to clear up a lot of these for good as for too long they have clouded internet discussions about DB.

Unless Toei becomes as competent at material preservation as peer studios (Tsuburaya, Pierrot, Sunrise, Gainax, etc), you’re not getting the BA on an official release.

(that I once again REALLY need to get around to making its own, whole thread) Na, a YT video containing this (and split into segments) would not only be much better than massive walls of text each post, but it would gain a huge audience that actually needs to see/hear this stuff. To listen to the music of the movies in the movies themselves, or do you think they fit better in the TV series? Definitely in the movies themselves, they are employed far better there as they were actually made for them so the placements aren’t off by any means. In the show they can be placed in l...

Re: What would Norihito Sumitomo’s weakest tracks be?

I don't know about his weakest tracks, but I found his music in Kai to be a bit too synthy. It kind of reminded me of the Faulconer score in the way that it sounded and was laid out. Like, I wouldn't be surprised to hear those tracks in the original dub. I felt like "Strong Rival" played three time...

Re: Any DB character themes that are as prominent as Piccolo’s from the original?

A good deal of the Dragon Team have their own leitmotifs (Goku himself actually has multiple motifs, as Kikuchi would start associating him with other ideas after Makafushigi Adventure was dropped), but due to how most of those themes originate from the film scores, they don't get featured as promi...
