Re: Harmony Gold Dub Cancelation

I would think of it less as being cancelled and more as failing to sell.

We may never know the exact sequence of events so it's all conjecture but they distributed the TV movie and it did well enough or someone there was passionate enough about the series to give it another try with the five ...

Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?

Same way that I feel about Toys R Us, Blockbuster and K-Mart. Would I prefer that they be around forever? Well sure, even though I don't care anymore somebody does.

I will always appreciate it too. I still 100% percent believe that the Dragon Ball/Toonami relationship was the right place at the ...

Re: Why are the English dubisms far too ingrained into the fandom?

I think audience age has a lot to do with it. Much more difficult to unlearn something that you just accept as the truth when you're a kid.

I see it with some other fandoms occasionally. I know older Marvel fans who instinctively say David Banner instead of Bruce Banner because they grew up ...

Re: Share your stories about seeing anything Dragon Ball in public

By complete coincidence I have a funny story from this morning.
I work in advertising. I was visiting a client, a medical office. There was a kid watching Super Broly on his phone in the waiting room. Pretty cool!

Re: The notion that Dragon Ball didn't catch on with the Harmony Gold dub

I'm just happy the Harmony Gold episodes were eventually found and faithfully restored by KBABZ so we can know the stories we always heard about this dub existing were not false memories (though I never had much doubt they were).

Oh yeah, I was so glad when they finally popped up! Knowing ...

Re: The notion that Dragon Ball didn't catch on with the Harmony Gold dub

Obviously the lack of visibility for the HG dub is reason we don't see more fans who got into Dragon Ball at that time. If we're talking about airing in limited test markets on independent stations, the potential audience is already limited.

To me the question is, where would they have gone from ...

Re: Your opinion for the original 3 Dragon Ball movies.

I've never been crazy about the first movie, even when I was a kid. I don't think it's bad or anything, just very bland as the movies go. The most fun I've ever had watching it is when the 1994 dub found it's way online a couple years ago.

Movie two is my favorite of the bunch. I love the horror ...

Re: Another live action thread (yes, I know)

One Piece is pretty irrelevant here

I do agree that in general terms it's kind of apples to oranges. However, the relevancy of One Piece in this particular conversation is that if it's as successful as Netflix hopes it will be, we're almost certain to get a wave of high profile, big budget ...

Don't want to get too far off topic, and maybe it's being discussed elsewhere, but anybody check out One Piece yet?
I've only watched the first episode, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

Re: Would you feel confident in the series if it were left in Toyotarou's hands?

To me the real question here is "how long do you want to see the original continuity dragged out?" Do I think he was be a good pick to continue creating side stories and sequels to the original series? Yeah for the most part.
Is that what I want for the characters long term? Not particularly.
I'm ...

Re: What is your Dragon Ball fandom timeline?

I've done this before, but I'm always a Mark for any nostalgia posting.

My first exposure to the series came back in the syndication days. My Fox affiliate out of Chattanooga, TN was pretty heavily promoting it during my regular Cartoons (Beast Wars, Gargoyles, Sailor Moon), but I never actually ...

Re: Which other timeskip could work as a midquel?

It's already been mentioned a couple of times, but I too would like to see what took place between DB and DBZ. Maybe even find some way to tell an in-canon version of the Garlic Jr. Story like Super did for Broly.

"Galaxy on the brink!! The super incredible guy"
Or "Bojack Unbound" to fans of the Funi dub was released 30 years ago this day on the 10th of july.
I suppose it was decent for what it was and the cool new locations and tournament set up were cool.

Re: What makes the handling Dragon Ball different from other franchises that failed to catch on worldwide?

Dragon Ball definitely had to catch a lot of lucky breaks to get where it's at in the US.

But if it went the way of Saint Seiya or FotNS, it would have been the preferable outcome.

Creatively, 100%. But for the sake of comparison, you need some real mainstream popularity and financial ...

Re: What makes the handling Dragon Ball different from other franchises that failed to catch on worldwide?

Are there any specific franchises you’re referring to?

Kamen Rider comes to mind. Massively popular in Japan, but hasn't really found a mainstream footing here despite a couple of attempts.

I really don't think it's the handling as much as the material itself. Obviously there were a couple of ...

Re: What Dragon Ball merchandise do you keep unopened/sealed?

I used to have a fairly big collection of Super Battle Collection and early Irwin stuff sealed, but I sold them off in a massive downsizing a couple of years ago. Not that I didn't love them, but the money was too good to pass up.
The only things I have sealed now are less of a collection and more ...

Re: Deep Thoughts: The Emperor Pilaf Saga

I had a similar experience with the BLT dub. I too never caught the original broadcast in 95. Which given the fact that the area I was living in then had Fox, UPN, and WB affiliates I'm just betting I probably could have, but just wasn't in the right place at the right time.

Anyway, I'm not sure ...

Re: I just watched the ending of GT (Japanese version) and it was one of the most depressing things I’ve ever seen

The word I would use is melancholy. The final episode always gets me. Not only is the episode itself emotional, it reminds me of the time period in my life when I first saw it. That was a difficult time in my life so I can't help but relive those feelings when I see it now too.

I do prefer Super ...

And Christmas 2005 I got Buu's Fury for GBA and loved every minute of it. I was actually very lucky to get it, as it never got a UK release, but some stores stocked US GBA games as they were region free.

Ahhh, I got Buu's Fury that Christmas too! I was a senior in high school so at that time ...
