When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
Even I as a fan of linear television know cable is done for. It's not official yet but today Craig McCracken did a final visit to the Cartoon Network studios building.

It was the home where Dragon Ball truly took off for the first time. Seeing it at death's door must bring stuff out of people.
Me?
I have long stopped watching it, and the way they treated One Piece has LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG made me fall out of love with it. And it wasnt the first home where it took off in Latin America either. But still this will be a sad day for me.

I know the belief is that streaming is the future, but the more and more we learn about it, it feels like a money pit and cable is dying for not so good reasons.
While I enjoy the benefits of on demand programming, I also like waiting for next day/week's episode.

Honestly, while I do have a lot of nostalgia for the network, I don't really care. I stop watching CN nearly 20 years ago outside some AS shows. Kids these days have stuff like Netflix, HBO Max (I refuse it to call it by its new stupid name), etc. My older cousins have young kids between the ages of 3-8 and they watch their shows on streaming services. If they want to watch Pokemon, Star Wars, Transformers, Spongebob, or whatever, they can with a click of a button. No more waiting to certain hours of the day to watch a certain show.

Dont worry! Cable itself wont die... because Fox News keeps it alive...4 million viewers. UGH. Such an awful thing.ABED wrote: Tue Jul 18, 2023 8:33 pm I know the belief is that streaming is the future, but the more and more we learn about it, it feels like a money pit and cable is dying for not so good reasons.

Not speaking as a DB fan, as far as I know there aren't any good creators there anymore. So it's whatever really.

There are actually for some sort of miracle some creator driven cartoons coming, they wont be coming from the old building but will air in CN. Who are creators you consider good that worked there?GhostEmperorX wrote: Tue Jul 18, 2023 8:58 pm Not speaking as a DB fan, as far as I know there aren't any good creators there anymore. Genndy Tartakovsky, older staff of Man of Action (some deceased), Craig McCracken of course.Cure Dragon 255 wrote: Tue Jul 18, 2023 9:06 pmWho are creators you consider good that worked there?
I'm not sure if some of the people I was thinking of were staff over there though but were involved in some shows they made.
It has nothing to do with whatever anime they might have on offer though so idk if I can say any more.

Well Craig is still in Cartoon Network but his show got moved to Adult Swim, and Craig is working on a Foster's reboot that I DOUBT will ever air on Adult Swim so I guess that's something good.
Still I get what you meant and agree anyway. Just had to ask.

Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
CN became a terrible network, so I am not surprise it is closing down. Their schedule was just spamming TTG way too much and putting some cartoon on weekend only at 07:30 only to cancel it.
CN only allowed 10 minutes cartoon, even if the animator asked to allow a 20 minute for a special episode, CN wouldn't allow it.
CN didn't allow anime to be on CN at all. The only DC cartoon was TTG and Unikitty, there was no Batman, Superman, Justice League, etc.
CN only cared about cheap and low quality cartoon.
The animator of Kids Next Door wanted to make a sequel, which CN didn't allow.
CN used to force certain cartoons to have way too many hiatus without notice and no notice when it returns, such as Steven Universe. Used to go months and maybe year without new episode, with no information at all.
CN screwed up with their animators and audience far too many times, so yes they deserve to close down.
Edit I just remembered every reboot CN did was inferior such as these examples:
TTG
Thundercats ROAR
PPG
Ben 10

Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
I'm conflicted. On one hand its one less avenue for Dragon Ball to air, people might say there's no benefit to having the series on linear TV today, but I'd rather that minority be served rather than excluded, and the more kids that are exposed to this franchise the better. Conversely we've all known for a long time Cartoon Network isn't going to return to its former glory. The golden age I, and many other Dragon Ball fans grew up with, which was Cartoon Network in the 90s and early to mid-2000s is all but a memory now, nothing will ever recapture the magic it had back then.
Cartoon Network UK particularly sucks, they dropped all Dragon Ball content in 2005, allegedly because they preferred to invest in original content (which from that point became garbage) rather than continue to license the series. Then there's also the issue of censoring LGBT content in Steven Universe, thereby depriving kids of having characters that can inspire them to not be ashamed of who they are. I lost a lot of respect for them after hearing about that.
Over here losing Cartoon Network would also be a loss for Ocean Kai, as the head of programming at Turner at one point said they weren't looking into Kai but if they did they would go for Ocean's dub. Granted it would be naive to think Cartoon Network UK would air Dragon Ball again as they haven't shown any interest in anime for a long time, but like with kids getting into the series through linear TV I prefer a slim chance than no chance at all.

Do you have any info about international non-English broadcasts about the Dragon Ball anime or manga translations/editions? Please message me. Researching for a future book with Dragon Ball scholar Derek Padula

Kudos, you said it far better than I could think to say. With that I think the answer is clear, and I'll definitely feel nothing if they go, in fact it's long overdue for it to happen.Edit I just remembered every reboot CN did was inferior such as these examples:
Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
I wouldn't really feel anything. I stopped watching Cartoon Network proper around 2006, and even Adult Swim around 2010.
Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
I think the last time I watched Cartoon Network religiously was 2005 or 2006, so I would be pretty unmoved.
I do agree it's basically a money pit now, between the 600 different streaming services and companies like Netflix cracking down on password sharing. While I still use Tubi (because it's free) and occasionally Netflix, I've pretty much embraced just buying shows on DVD again.

I know Disney+ used that model for their new shows and it was definitely nice being able to discuss a show episode by episode weekly instead of an entire 8-13 episode season being dropped in a single day. While I enjoy the benefits of on demand programming, I also like waiting for next day/week's episode.
Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
I have more memories of watching CN way before they had DBZ and probably before DBZ came into my life. I remember shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and the Chicken, Dexter's Lab, actual kid shows, not kid shows like DBZ. Only in the late 00's and a few years ago with DBS I got to watch the show on CN.
I did shed an artificial tear when the local channel that brought DBZ to me went defunct like 20 years ago. But I couldn't care less about this, I don't really relate DBZ to CN, and I'm pretty sure the shows I grew up watching no longer were on CN.

The "DB & CN" association I had for 16 years (from ages 5 up to 21) stopped existing when they pulled the franchise off the schedule from our CN (LatAM) two years ago.
So yeah, I wouldn't be really sad if that hypothetic scenario happens.

I'm not a nostalgic sort of woman. I haven't watched Cartoon Network in 15+ years and I don't see a point in deifying a television network. My Dragon Ball fandom might have started as an little girl watching it on Toonami in 1998, but it has continued long and far beyond the need for linear television.
Cartoon Network might as already be dead: I have no use for it.

Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
Cartoon Network has been a prominent platform for animated shows, including beloved series like Dragon Ball. Fans of Dragon Ball might feel a sense of nostalgia and sentimental attachment to the channel, as it might have been a significant part of their childhood or formative years. it's important to remember that the end of a channel doesn't necessarily mean the end of the shows it aired. In this digital age, streaming services and online platforms have become dominant players in the distribution of content. So, even if Cartoon Network were to cease to exist, fans would likely still be able to enjoy Dragon Ball and other shows through alternative means.

Where I'm from (in Africa aka the continent no one cares about), we never got anime on CN, only their original programming and maybe some older Hanna-Barbera properties/Boomerang shows.Edwardmatthew wrote: Fri Jul 21, 2023 8:28 am Cartoon Network has been a prominent platform for animated shows, including beloved series like Dragon Ball.
(And sure enough, I find out that they established Toonami there in 2017... too little, too late.)

Re: When Cartoon Network reaches its end How do you think you will feel you about it as a Dragon Ball Fan?
I haven't watched anything on CN in a long time. I do keep up with Adult Swim though, there's a lot of great shows in the Adult Swim block. Unfortunately a few of my faves just got cancelled but I hope they make a lot more seasons of Smiling Friends.
The last CN shows I really kept up with were Adventure Time and Steven Universe, but those are long gone at this point.
Seeing CN go (if that's actually what WB is planning) is quite sad, a lot of those shows were my childhood. Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy, Chowder, Fosters Home, etc. Was also one of my gateways into anime as they aired Yugioh at primetime. I've got a VHS tape somewhere that I made of the Yugi Vs. Bakura and Joey Vs. Odion duels, and the commercials are like a time capsule lol.
And after getting into Yugioh is when I branched into anime more with Pokemon and DBZ.

BTW while I do see CN closing down soon, there are still many new shows coming to Adult Swim and Adult Swim will only exist as long as CN does. So I doubt it will close SOON ish. Still that's why I left margin for any interpretation in the title.
