When Babidi is taken aback on how much energy Yam and Spopovitch amassed, he remarks "They must have collected energy from hundreds of people", which seems to imply that any energy that was not tainted would work.

1) Any kind of energy that is not from a demon or a person possessed by Babidi. That's why he can't just control people and have them "donate" their energy to Boo, because their energy was "tainted".

I rewatched the Trunks' Story TV Special today (big holiday here), and a plot point emerged from a single phrase #17 has said.

You mean the two robots are different? But Cell explicitly says it was the spy robot that got their cells. See in Episode 70 of Kai, when he points to the spy robot, he says that the robot is transmitting data to the computer, and that he also wants Piccolo's cells.

I'm watching Kai now, and on Episode 70, Cell tells a story that can leave a pretty big plothole.
