Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

The music swap has nothing to do with Cancon. Dubs are given a 50% time credit regardless of whether or not the score was composed locally. https://i.imgur.com/1q1Tc69.png I'm also sceptical that this dub's score is original. There probably were new pieces composed for the show, but the Anitunes guy...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

I just have one question: what makes anyone think that FUNimation used the would-be Ocean dub footage for broadcast TV? I don't know; this entire thing sounds asinine (from their perspective). And if that is the case, then it just sounds like a rich person's pet fan project. So just go ahead and "l...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

I never cared about a network picking it up, honestly. I don't think that would benefit most people short of having it saved and shared online like what happened with the original Z dub (except, y'know, now it won't sound horrible because technology has changed). But I don't see why it can't be add...

Who's to say that leak came from someone at Ocean. That pilot was screened at multiple conventions.

Speaking of "Snyder," I have some news for you all that really surprises me that it wasn't brought up sooner. Michael Hirsh and WOW! have appointed Stuart Snyder to the board of directors. https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2020/02/19/1986926/0/en/WOW-Unlimited-Media-Announces-Board-Changes...

Re: Is it fair to say that Dragon Ball is no longer marketed to kids in North America?

Anime distributors, by and large, have stopped marketing to children in North America. Funimation is guilty of this, but they're not alone. Most of the anime properties promoted at that market are from non-anime distributors. You don't see Viz trying to get Boruto or Sailor Moon in front of kids. Sh...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

None of Geneon's shows went to YTV. All of them aired on G4 Canada That's not entirely true . Anyway, that reference was in regards to the three uncut Dragon Ball Z movies Geneon (then Pioneer) had Ocean dub. YTV aired those. Did they get them from Geneon? I don't know. Canadian TV stations are req...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

Canadian TV is not a major factor in what gets dubbed in Canada. Maybe if that broadcaster was the first international one to pick up a show, but even then. Just look at what's currently airing on Canadian television: Bakugan, Beyblade, Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh!. Of those four, only one is a Canadian d...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

The LA dubs from Viz picked up once they merged with ShoPro USA in the early '00s. Shows like Death Note, NANA and Hunter x Hunter ('99) all happened post-merger, though. It was when the 2010s rolled around that they stopped working with Ocean entirely. The ratio you're talking about is presumably t...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

I'm the person who said that. The name that comes to mind is Charlene Ingram, though those dates don't lineup as nicely as I remembered them. I want to say she wasn't the only one who made that move, but I'm struggling to pull up other names. Maybe I've got correlation and causation confused here. T...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

Now, while the people at Time Warner/WarnerMedia do not have a clue about Canadian TV politics and how much more of a monopoly it is here than it is down south, I do want to counter your comparison between [adult swim] and YTV/Teletoon. YTV and Teletoon are Corus' own properties, and perhaps they'r...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 10; Still Unreleased

A. The existence of Toonami Canada will depend on the fans, this was outright said by the guys behind Adult Swim Canada. Corus/AS don't know whether there's enough demand, and a bunch of fans emailing in will convince them that there is. I want to point out that no one who works for Corus has said ...

Re: Preserving the Nicktoons Airings of DB Material

The DB Wiki is shit. It has been shit for a long time now. At various points it made up techniques IIRC. They're actually right about this. Each time Cartoon Network attempted to air that episode, they ran an earlier one instead. I'm not really sure the TV version would be any different than what y...

Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

It's funny people are bringing up Viz and Sailor Moon. In the early part of the 2010s, a handful of Funimation employees moved to Viz's anime department. This coincided with Sailor Moon. It also marked the point when Viz began cutting back on their budgets for dubs. Outside of Boruto (which is grand...

Re: Is Dragon Ball creatively bankrupt at this point?

It's been creatively bankrupt for years. Some could argue it always has been. The powers that be are so strapped for story threads they recycle earlier villains and arcs like it's something to be proud of. We've gotten increasingly lazy transformations. Super takes place during a timespan that was o...

Re: Looks like Netflix picked up DBZ for the Netherlands (and other EU countries perhaps?)

On a more serious note there, probably highly unlikely we will see any alternate dubs on Netflix, they will more than likely just go for whatever version of the series is the most cheap, convenient and easy to license, that being Funimation's remastered dub of Dragon Ball Z. This might be the most ...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Regarding those CRTC approval listings, those are just bizarre, and nonsensical. Episodes 220-276 aired in Canada between September 2002 and March 2003, so it's completely baffling that there wouldn't have been an entry until 2005. By that time, the episodes were still being shown in reruns on YTV,...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

I'm not particularly optimistic about Wow's channel ever getting off the ground anymore, but I'll save you my negativity. As for the OG DBZ, this is what was submitted to the CRTC: https://i.imgur.com/1LX922J.png It's been a very long time since I've concerned myself with that dub. So I don't know i...

Re: Dragon Ball Super To Air in the UK on Pop!

This is pretty awesome! I think it's fair to assume that this will be the edited dub that airs in Africa and Australia. I wonder if any of our UK friends on the forum would be up to recording it so we can finally have the edited version archived. I'm pretty sure there are people archiving the Austr...
