Re: Official Announcement Thread & Discussion

They seriously need to call this show Super Dragon Ball (Z or no Z at the end) instead of Dragon Ball Super, if only because the bad grammar makes me want to punch something.

Re: Anime Recession?

For comparison, here's the current wages as dictated by the IATSE's (that's the US animation guild) collective bargaining agreement with the Hollywood studios: http://animationguild.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/TAG-CBA-minimums-2012-2015.pdf The caveat, obviously, is that since Filmation was shut ...

Re: Missed chance - no Dragon Ball

Then they'd lose their timeslot and the show would have no set airing-time anymore. That's not necessarily the case. Unless the networks tinker with the schedule between seasons, hit shows stay in the same time slot when the summer (which is loading up with trashy reality junk instead of reruns the...

Re: Missed chance - no Dragon Ball

I got a solution: maybe stop being a whore money and actually make the show in seasons like... you know... the rest of the world? Pretty much my thoughts all the way. Excluding the big syndicated shows (which went into decline pretty much as Dragon Ball started airing in Japan), the standard Americ...

This is the condensed version of Kai? Seriously, I'm done with Kai. This is just painful.

Re: Kai Episode 110 (22 June 2014)

This episode was intensely bland and lifeless. It would probably be more worth to watch the component episodes of DBZ if the editing is going to be this listless.

Re: Kai Episode 109 (15 June 2014)

I love that episode of DS9 :p Actually I sort of agree with you, but I also disagree. The music for later seasons of DS9 does start to become a bit bland in some episodes, but a lot of other episodes have awesome scores, for example "Call to Arms" or "Time's Orphan" or "Our Man Bashir". And the cas...

Someone's getting classy like Michael Feinstein with the Gamera song.

Re: Kai Episode 109 (15 June 2014)

Anyone ever watch the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "Trials and Tribble-ations"? It's the episode crosses over with "The Trouble With Tribbles" from the original series. The story, acting, etc. is great, but there's a glaring issue: the music (as was the case with all 24th Century-era TV Trek f...

Re: Herms watches the show (update: DB 4)

If the subtitles are the same ones in the singles, I noticed a number of inconsistencies in the subtitles, myself (which is astonishing given my limited knowledge of Japanese)-lots of pafu pafu references left unaddressed even though the first one is fully explained (and despite the Z subtitles dil...

Re: Lunch and Yajirobe - Pointless?

It didn't take long during my first-ever watching of Dragon Ball to realize that Yajirobe is just as hatable as he is in Z. Lunch, however, is definitely a victim of all of Toriyama's worst faults as a writer-bad at romance, forgets old characters, and struggles with what to do with the women.

Re: Herms watches the show

The first episode to have a recap at all is 11, and, even then, it's not really a consistent thing until around the start of the Budoukai. I guess at that point Toei realized they could easily pad out the episode by showing stuff they'd already animated. Of course, we know that Toei would frequentl...

Re: Will FUNimation ever release Dragon Ball on Blu-ray?

HD is great for stuff that is HD. Old movies and series that get "HD" remastered more often than not look terrible. 16 mm and 35 mm film has a higher resolution than HD, so if anything looks bad on Blu-ray, it's usually the result of a bad restoration, or of upscaling (the Firefly Blu-ray set uses ...

Re: Prices in Japan

Anime used to be expensive in the US when it first started coming over here. I remember seeing VHS tapes with about 3 episodes on them selling for $25-$30 Home videos in general used to be expensive in the US. I'm a wee bit of a whipper-snapper, but back in the day $100 MSRP for Terminator 2: Judgm...

The length and complexity of today's games have probably murdered the rental market in Japan just like it has in America.

Re: Will FUNimation ever release Dragon Ball on Blu-ray?

Seven episodes per disc is the sweet spot for half-hour shows on DVD for the major studios. However, Funimation's Dragon Ball encodes are so subpar on even the sets with 5 episodes per disc that it's hard to compare them to anything but the awful (and I do mean awful) Speed Racer DVDs that cram 10 p...

Re: Will FUNimation ever release Dragon Ball on Blu-ray?

I wouldn't want FUNimation's Dragon Ball footage on Blu-ray because what they've got is the only the minimum (1x OP, 153x Eps, 4x Eyecatches, 1xED) so I'd rather have that they release their own Dragon Box of Dragon Ball to have all the original content. I kinda miss the NEPs as I saw them on the o...

Re: DBZ Movie?

Dragon Ball Evolution is still pretty recent, so I doubt we will see another live action from Hollywood anytime soon. Fox may still have the rights to Dragon Ball, but I doubt they will waste their time with another movie. They will likely let their rights expire since they don't seem to care about...
