Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

Even if they went with DB first, there's no reason to think it still wouldn't have been a big success. The issue isn't that it wasn't DBZ, it's issue was that it was put on at a time when the target audience wasn't awake on channels few watched. No question that the timeslots didn't help. However--...

Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

It’s almost like they had no business dubbing the show. Oh don't get me wrong, there are plenty of solid arguments to be made that they weren't a good candidate. However, dealing with the reality that they were the ones dubbing the show, I think they made a bad artistic decision, but great business...

Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

No it was incompetence plain and simple. No other dub was that stupid. There was no reason to skip ahead to Z. The incompetence is skipping 1/3rd of the story. I fully admit to being very cynical here, but I actually understand their logic and don't think it was stupid. Don't get me wrong, as a fan...

Re: What is the story behind the Westwood Dub?

I wonder who saved money by using the Vancouver cast, though. The reason I say that is because the Westwood dub was a union dub (using ACTRA, the Canadian union), whereas FUNimation's dub was and continues to be a non-union dub. Maybe it was a case of the Vancouver actors being more expensive, but t...

Re: Kikuchi Kai: Is the music quality better?

One thing I noticed (but I watched Kai only by streaming wabsites + excerpts on youtube) is that these BGMs from Kikuchi in Kai seem pretty low pitched, compared to the original, that sounds often almost half a tone lower. It's disturbing, because when DBZ was on french television, it was exactly t...

Re: Team Four Star's influence on Dragon Ball's revival

I mean, without access to FUNimation's sales data, I don't think there's any official way to show a correlation between the rise of TFS and a revival of Dragon Ball's popularity. That said, it wouldn't surprise me. If Thing A and Thing B are related, it only stands that one would remind you of the o...

Re: Vic Mignogna

One thing that’s particularly amusing to me is how quickly they turned against Monica Rial. I do think it's important to note that who we're talking about when we say "they"...because really, there are two groups of "they"s here. Yes, there are some fans of Vic who are having a hard time coming to ...

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

Part of me wonders if Netflix is actually able do that, regardless of whether they want to or not. It would depend on the specifics of FUNimation's existing agreement with Toei regarding Kai's digital distribution rights in the UK and Ireland.

Re: Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" dub seems to be coming...

If you ask me, this dub has more of a chance at this point of being leaked online than airing on TV. It's been almost 10 years since it would've been recorded & it's nearing 10 years passed where Kai was relevant, so unless they wanna do an anniversary airing, I don't see it happening. I took a bri...

Re: FUNi's SE and JPN BGM Broadcast quality?

Clarity of the audio aside, there was the additional problem of inconsistent levels. It varied greatly from episode to episode just how loud the music was. In some episodes it was gloriously loud, while in others it was so quiet you could hardly hear it...and "hardly" was downgraded to "can't" whene...

Re: Vic Mignogna

So new Broly is Ichigo. Does vic get paid if they use already recorded voice lines. I know he's the cum of the Earth but he fits better for classic Broly. Nope. Anime and video game work pretty much never has royalty pay involved. It's always one lump sum payment after the initial recording, and th...

Re: Vic Mignogna

I'm a freelance guide writer for IGN so I'm in a somewhat comparable situation as Vic regarding how he was hired. I don't work with IGN or as IGN, I work for IGN. If a scandal hypothetically came out about me, IGN is well within their rights to not contract me for future work, just like Funi with V...

Re: Vic Mignogna

A bit of a correction, but that wasn’t actually Chris Ayres’ video game debut. He had already voiced Freeza in Tenkaichi Tag Team and Raging Blast 2. in the case of UT, the reason Freeza’s voice swapped between Linda Young and Chris Ayers was because a lot of his voice clips were reused from the fi...

Re: Vic Mignogna

It was clear all the way back in February that his time as Broly was finished. The only question at this point is: who is FUNimation going to use from here on out? With each passing day, we'll be getting closer and closer to finding out probably. I can't imagine they recorded for the Super version ...

General reminder that YouTube-drinking-screamy-man is not Vic's actual incompetent lawyer, and is instead a more different incompetent lawyer, but they're all in bed with each others' payrolls anyway so ultimately whatever it's all kind of a wash of ridiculousness. Right, but he owns the law firm t...

Re: Future DB(Z) releases should be edited for it's painfully outdated LBTG+ content

I mean, in the Arabic dub of DBZ, all instances of saiyans turning into oozarus are censored because those in charge of the censoring decided that those scenes amounted to promoting Darwin's Theory of Evolution, which many in the Arabic world are opposed to on religious grounds. Instead, those scen...

Re: Future DB(Z) releases should be edited for it's painfully outdated LBTG+ content

I think it's important to remember, too, that Toei is a Japanese company. I'm not saying anti-LGBT content is right, but I am saying that, on a cultural level, what offends American audiences doesn't necessarily offend Japanese audiences, and vice versa. Political correctness, for example, is genera...
