Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

However, it's worth addressing the other point someone else made which was, how do you actually determine whether or not an actor are the sexuality they say they are? How do you enforce that they only play certain roles? As I mentioned a few posts back, both of those situations are technically ille...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

For what it's worth, more casting directors are trying to take sexual identity into account for the sake of getting a better performance. One particular production for a dub noted in the audition scripts for a character that the character identifies as a non-binary homosexual, and that they would pr...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

Because of Funimation's extremely small talent pool during Z and GT, many of the characters are voiced by locals in the area. White people with southern accents. One of the very interesting things about how the pandemic has affected the dubbing industry is that most dubs are being recorded from hom...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

In all honesty - for the most part, I don't have a huge problem with a white person voicing a POC (does depend a bit on context, what the role is, etc etc though), it's more the fact that a lot of the acting industry (voice or not) absolutely has issues when it comes to marginalised people getting ...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

People that default hard to saying "African American" to the point they can't bring themselves to saying anything else always end up making themselves look like complete assclowns whenever they have to refer to a black person from some other country. I realize that now. However, in all fairness to ...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

Turns out there's more info on that poll here . Pretty disappointed in the Washington Post, as I normally consider them a pretty reliable source. In any event, not that I was using that term even after seeing that poll, but it nevertheless appears I was wrong to use that poll as an example. This is...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I don't argue that minority actors can't play, say, White actors. That's punching up if anything. I think it is concerning when you're casting Phil LaMarr as Samurai Jack, though, unless I'm missing something about the character and performer here. I know as a trans person I would be upset if a cis...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

Again, it's worth considering that white people wouldn't be the only demographic sealed off from that work if dub casting was 100% ethnically accurate. Black actors would be barred from it, as would Latino actors. For that matter, if we're going to be as specific as saying that they have to be Amer...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

Honey, you're still passing up Japanese American actors for the sake of White people. Again, it's worth considering that white people wouldn't be the only demographic sealed off from that work if dub casting was 100% ethnically accurate. Black actors would be barred from it, as would Latino actors....

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

When I stop to think about it, I’m pretty sure a lot of voice actors would be put out of work if anime and video game dubs were to only allow actors who happen to match the ethnicity of the characters they play. I’m not so sure that would be the proper way of addressing inclusion in the field of vo...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I thought that when it comes to dubbing foreign shows anything goes when it comes to casting. There definitely should be more non-White VAs in the American voice acting industry, however, casting becomes a practical issue when dubbing a show/movie into a certain language for a certain country. For ...

2) I'm pretty sure they're joking. Or are they? Yeah, I'm sure. Or maybe not.
Allow me to clarify, I'm (not?) joking.

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

But someone up above said that the point here is that minorities don't even get auditions/roles period. So why is the topic at hand about minorities playing minorities? Shouldn't the issue be why voice acting studios aren't hiring minorities? I feel like people are complaining about A and yet sayin...

I know I’ve been asking a bunch of questions in this thread, but I have one last one. What about playing a character with a mental illness?
As far as I'm concerned, that falls under "anyone who can act the part" territory. Especially since some mental disorders render some people unable to act.

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I’m not usually one for conspiracy theories, but I’m inclined to think that the decision to pull Gone with the Wind was more of a marketing stunt than anything else. Digital sales for the movie went up through the roof after it was pulled from HBO Max, and I certainly don’t recall there having been...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

I like the idea of putting a disclaimer up front. Yup, that's where I stand. HBO-MAX took down Gone With The Wind not too long ago, only to put it up a few days later with a disclaimer by black film scholar Jacqueline Stewart. If you have HBO-MAX (or can find an upload of the disclaimer on YouTube)...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

Agreed. But to pretend that Asian and black actors don't even get auditions at all is a bit dishonest imo. I don't have stats for voice acting in particular, but it's pretty well known that people with "ethnic", "Black", etc sounding names - that can affect whether or not they even get a job interv...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

So, I guess I’ll ask this again, should it be considered acceptable for non-Japanese/non-Asian people to voice anime characters? It kind of seems like if you want to commit to giving more roles to people of color, then you can’t really have white people voicing anime characters, unless the characte...

Re: Minority representation for minority characters in Voice acting

There's a massive discussion going on about this in the VO circles, and it's admittedly some tricky waters to navigate given what we have been used to. I'm seeing some decent arguments on both sides of the fence here. In writing that last sentence, it may come across as me being deliberately vague o...
