Re: Watched Dragon Ball Z as a kid - interested in rewatching the series. What series/versions/releases should I pick/sk

I have watched the dub of Kai with subtitles and the dialog is damn close, so I think you are overselling how much added humor there was. And both Strait and Schemmel have come pretty damn far so no I don't think they clash with the newer cast members. If you look at Kai as merely an approximation o...

Re: Who is a Mary Sue in Drago Ball.

It was dumb. It's like climaxing and then keeping going without a refractory period. It's all a bunch of friction and wasted mostion.

Re: Watched Dragon Ball Z as a kid - interested in rewatching the series. What series/versions/releases should I pick/sk

I'd watch the series in release order then watch the movies at the end of their respective series. If you are so inclined to rewatch the series, there are discussions to be had about the most enjoyable order to watch everything. If I had the option, I'd just spend the $6 per month to watch DB, DBZ, ...

Re: Who is a Mary Sue in Drago Ball.

I think he should have as it goes to the core of the arc. I can deal with clunky execution, but the anticlimax is so unsatisfying, Gary Stu be damned.

Re: Toriyama's depiction of S-Cells is unlike midichlorians: people hung up on potential.

They all did it immediately. Goku, Krillin, and Yamcha all managed to create a weak Kamehameha the moment they gave it a try. Tenshinhan was the only one shown being able to throw out a perfected Kamehameha just by seeing it once. It wasn't until Saiyans became the focus of the show that Goku start...

Re: Who is a Mary Sue in Drago Ball.

Would it be any better if the term was unisex? I would think so, at least to a certain extent, but I can't say for sure. It's really about figuring out which aspects of the concept are legitimate and which are not, while leaving the sexism out of it. I think the concept is legit, but the name needs...

Re: Who is a Mary Sue in Drago Ball.

The point was never his relatability but the tragic irony of being able to see the death of your own race and being utterly powerless to do anything about it, but the one person who isn't is the one you shunned for being a nothing - and your child on top of it all. There is the male equivalent - Gar...

Re: Who is a Mary Sue in Drago Ball.

Trunks is probably the closest but he doesn't really do much beyond the first few episodes. He's quickly eclipsed. A hallmark of this type of character is they are often better than most of the main characters at even the things they specialize in and save the day. An example I often see cited is We...

Re: What do you want with Broly?

A slap to a single character, especially one the audience cares about, can be more impactful than destroying an entire world. I heard an audible gasp from the audience when I saw it in the theater. That seems like a silly thing to gasp at. The film didn’t even depict him slapping Bulma as a serious...

Re: Who is a Mary Sue in Drago Ball.

There is the male equivalent - Gary Stu, so I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss the concept out of hand just because sexist douchebags will use the term at the drop of a hat.

Re: Toriyama's depiction of S-Cells is unlike midichlorians: people hung up on potential.

He has a tail when no other human has one. He can fly Kinto Un. He learns a technique that took Muten Roshi 50 years to master after seeing it once. The S-Cells weren't a factor in the fight between Goku and Vegeta. That's because he's an alien. On his home world, everyone has one. So could Chi-Chi...

I enjoyed the Battle of Gods retelling, but disliked the Golden Freeza arc. I shudder to think how bad a protracted Broly arc would be.

Re: Toriyama's depiction of S-Cells is unlike midichlorians: people hung up on potential.

He had a genetic gift but it did take hard work to hone his skills. It's more like genius. All that means is they have a great degree of aptitude to learn, but it still takes effort to learn. This is directly from Toriyama: "It’s not like anyone can become a Super Saiyan through training and anger....

But he wasn't created and engineered for a purpose. He had a genetic gift but it did take hard work to hone his skills. It's more like genius. Re: Toriyama's depiction of S-Cells is unlike midichlorians: people hung up on potential.

Others worked very hard and didn't make nearly the gains he did. It's a combination of things, including his genetics. He has a tail when no one else did, clearly he was unique beyond the appendage. I don't think saying someone has good genes diminishes their accomplishments. Many had Goku's same ph...

Well, even before we knew his Saiyan heritage, we knew there was always something special about Goku and it wasn't just his temperament.

Re: How do you ''see'' the forum?

The forum has been good about clarifying certain fundamentals about the story itself (e.g. what genre it is, the motivations of the characters, etc.) I see it as a mature and safe place to discuss the show with people way more knowledgeable than myself as well as people who enjoy the original story ...
