It's seemingly been a good
two years since the last thread like this so I figured it'd be cool to see what 2014
Kanzenshuu users think are the most
beautiful/best looking shots from the three
Dragon Ball animes.
Please don't treat this as an image dump. I'd love to hear your reasoning behind why you like the shot so much as well as any general discussion about the art.
Rules:
- Please refrain from using shots from bootleg sources.
This thread is about the quality of the art and to use heavily compressed, low bitrate sources would be doing a great disservice to the art as well as the point of the topic.
- Take your screenshots properly
There's zero excuse for shoddily taken screenshots. Don't use things like Print Screen or the Snipping Tool. Open your video in players such as VLC or Media Player Classic and use the native screenshot functions availiable. Ensure your aspect ratios are correct for the source.
- Colour Correction
Of course, we want these shots to look as accurate to the original cels are possible so do feel free to colour correct if you so desire. Please do use cels as a reference and don't just colour correct to your personal tastes. We don't want HD Remaster 420 YouTube Reject #120334 shots in here.
Without further ado, here's one to kick things off! A shot from Majin Vegeta's visit to the tournament grounds.
It's certainly not the most exciting or emotive shot compared to some of the more famous Vegeta shots like his punch against Cell, his Final Flash or his farewell freeze frame. However, it's one of those shots that I feel perfectly sums up the character; that cocky look in his eye and smug grin. It is quintessential Vegeta! Not to mention, it's the style of art that my brain flicks to when I think of the character.
What are your favourites and why?

I've always liked this shot of Bardock silently trying to rationalize Freeza's betrayal and the death of his comrades:
Unfortunately the Blu-ray is 16:9 instead of the original 4:3...

This shot of Gohan after Goku dies.
That face of absolute devastation, especially how he feels it's his fault since he didn't kill Cell when he could have.
thomas1up are fuckin terrible and need to fuck off asap all the other noobs are decent thouhg

Here's another of my favourites:
I've yet to find a more terrifying image of Piccolo. If you throw it up against his look towards the end of the series, the difference is startling. It's great to see such a huge shift for the character represented visually alongside his personality.

YES!
I love Maeda's style, especially at the 23rd tournament, and that shot especially.
Here are my contributions for now:
I always loved Super Saiyan 3's design, and this shot of its reveal always looked awesome to me, especially in the shading. I also love those dynamic clouds.
This shot is when Goku and Vegeta are fighting Boo inside of Boo. The shading greatly reminds me of those Kai album covers, and the last shot of Dear Zarathustra, so I thought it was retroactively noteworthy. :p

Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

For those wondering:
I never really found that all that terrifying visually. It's the insane scream that brings that scene to life for me. Whether that be Furukawa or McNeil - both are incredible.

Anyone have that screenshot of Super Saiyan 2 Gohan rising out of a crater with a pissed off look on his face after he kills the last Cell Jr.?

Here's a pic from Movie 9. I made the size 720X480. But it looks wrong to me.
EDIT: The image is fixed

Fortunately, I've watched episode 185 enough times to remember the exact scene:

It should be
853x480

I like this Gt Goten picture. It's IMO one of few times Goten looked liked Goku in GT. Most of time he looks more like Gohan. I also think the hair is cool.
The first Shot of SSJ Goten. Amazing. It's when he first became my favorite character. Such a great work.
Goten looks amazing on this one.
BTW guys. If you want I can screen shot from Sony Vegas if y'all like. It doesn't compress.

That's because it is wrong
. To have a 16:9 (1.78) aspect ratio it should be 720x405. I personally prefer 640x360, but either are fine.

Ah, okay. But what about 853X480? Can that work equally as well?

It's the same aspect ratio and the most accurate representation of the image quality since the video is 480p.

It can, but it's the highest resolution you can go before you start distorting the pixels. All DVDs are encoded with 720x480 pixels in the file, but there are flags that tell your DVD player whether the file should be displayed on your TV in fullscreen (640x480) or widescreen (853x480). The difference is pixel aspect ratio. The ratio of the pixels in 4:3 fullscreen is 0.9 and in 16:9 widescreen it is 1.2 (hence, it's anamorphic). So the actual resolution of both is still 720x480, but the pixels are just shaped differently. Since the pixels are wider in widescreen you can cram more info into them. When properly interpolated they are "stretched" to look normal and you achieve an effective resolution of 853x480. You do need to be careful about how you "stretch" them though because this can accentuate or create pixel flaws.
If you want to see this effect in action, save the image below. You'll see it's encoded as 720x480, but I've change it's pixel aspect ratio. Unfortunately most browsers don't detect this when rendering the image, but if you save it and open the image in some photo editing software, or even something as simple as Windows Photo Viewer, it'll display as 853x480. Neat, huh?
Overall though, yeah, it works equally as well.

I have this in much better quality:

This shot of Piccolo charging the Makankosappo has such a menacing quality which I feel really brings out the demonic side of his character and its relevance to the technique.
The still image of this sequence really doesn't do it justice. Though the intensity is still there, as Goku blasts off towards a helpless Burter with such force that Jeice can do absolutely nothing but watch on while his teammate takes a finishing blow.
The anime really embellishes Trunks' introduction to the series. Though this shot of him transitioning into Super Saiyan really makes it appear that he's relishing the sight of Freeza in terror and intently prolonging the moment. The lighting effect and his stance only aids in exuding power.
I've always thought the glistening effect on Freeza's attack made this scene a lot more spectacular, with it being so out of the ordinary. They continue to display Trunks' dominance by him holding something of such a grand scale with ease. His hair resembling a crown helps give off a majestic appearance.
This shot illustrates the tension of the situation very nicely.
A fantastic shot of Chaozu's castle in DB Movie 3 painted with great detail.

These don't look like they're from legitimate sources at all nor do they conform to resolutions that would indicate actual releases. Please follow the rules so we get images at their highest quality! Thanks (:
Unless you're working with raw MPEG2s from the DVDs in Vegas, screenshots from there won't be acceptable. But yes, you should be taking your own screenshots and not sourcing them from Wikis or Google.

Ooft! That's a nice one. I absolutely adore that scene. Man, a lot of fans tend to favour the cleaner art style from later in the series but the earlier stuff had some awesome 'grit' to it.
