Gohan's age when he fought Cell

There's something I've always been wondering ever since I saw the Gohan/Cell fight years ago.

Was Gohan really eleven years old at that point? Or is that just something some people believe because of FUNimation and Monster Truck Rally Sandpaper Voice?

In the anime he certainly was.
Manga, I guess he's 9 maybe 10 with RoSaT.

Strangely, supposedly according to Herms's age guide two years passed beetween the battle with Namek and the arrival of Trunks. Also it seems that these 9 months added to a few more turned in one more year, making Gohan 11 at the Cell Games.

+ A year of training for the Saiyans: 5
+ A month to get to Namek, about a week there, 260 days for Porunga-wishes (I think you forgot about this part, Fox666), then another year before Goku returns: ~7
+ Three years of training for the Androids: ~10
+ Almost a year in the Room of Spirit and Time: ~11

So Gohan's either 10 or 11, but definitely at least close to 11, and whichever it technically is depends on his birthday, I suppose.

Isn't it clearly stated in the beginning of the Buu arc, that Gohan is 16 years old? This could only mean that he had to have been 9 years old at that time.

According to the narrator, 1 year and 260 days pass between Freeza's defeat and Trunks' showing up. So we're basically stuck between two different things the narrator says. I think it might work if you discount how old Gohan physically is do to the Room of Spirit and Time and then assume that during the start of the Boo arc he's close to his 17th birthday but not quite there yet.

Unfortunate consequence of FUNimation originally aging him up to "five and a half" when they first dubbed DBZ back in 1996... plus lack of caring, I suppose.

In the Japanese games his Cell Games era form is called shounen-ki, boyhood". Saiyan/Namek era Gohan is then younen-ki, "(early) childhood", and Boo era is seinen-ki, "adolescence". But this "earlier childhood/later childhood" distinction doesn't translate very well. My guess is they went with "teen" rather than "boy" because they thought having two Gohans labeled "child" and "boy" would be a little too confusing.

I guess I also thought that he was in his first year of highschool, so that made me think 16, but then again , I don't remember any info that disporves he didn't attend a different highscholl before switching to Videl's.

I just made the list for the topic. lol Went through Herms' Daizenshuu timeline, erased almost everything because most of it wasn't relevant, and then inserted every time Gohan should have had a birthday between the manga's mentioned timeskips.

BTW, I'm pretty sure that its implied (maybe stated?) Gohan was still home-schooled before attending Orange Star High. That's why such a fuss was made over him needing to act normal, as he's never had to fit into normal society before.

Yeah, during the first Boo era chapter the narrator says there aren't any schools out in the sticks where Gohan lives, so up until then he'd just studied on his own and taken correspondence courses.

I personally think the manga saying Gohan was 16 in the beginning of the Buu saga was your typical Toriyama fuck up.
