How long have you ever left the Dragonball series before?

Post by precita » Tue Oct 13, 2015 2:10 am

For example what's the longest you ever left the franchise in general, without watching/reading any of the anime/manga or discussing Dragonball with anyone?

For me I think I took a 10 year break. For example I watched all of DBZ, Dragonball and GT when it aired on Cartoon Network a decade ago. And then after I saw everything at that point...I just stopped. I played some of the videogames at the time but I didn't go back to rewatch anything for almost 10 years. I think it really was around 2005 or 2006 that Cartoon Network finished airing all the series? I can't remember but I think it was around that time they finished airing GT and the Season 1-2 redub. So its been a while.

It was of course the special with Tarble and then the announcement of Battle of Gods that brought me back into the franchise, and then this led to Return of F and Super. I watched the movies and then suddenly got nostalgia and went back to rewatch the entire anime again starting with the original Dragonball. Its funny had TOEI not brought the franchise back with this new series and movies I don't think I ever would have come back to the franchise anytime soon, if ever. Funny how it comes to that.

I know I dropped out for a while. I think between 3-5 years. Maybe it was only 1-2 years. I can't quite remember. I used to watch the series on tv weekly, but then I think it stopped airing on TV, and I stopped watching the series. I fell for the Sonic series and then Dragon Ball came back and replaced it after the drought period.

From my initial exposure to the series in 1999/2000 to around 2006 when growing up, I was pretty much inseperable from the franchise. Even when I gravitated towards Anime fandom circles more then Dragonball ones, I always followed the franchise closely.

I'd say between 2007 and 2011 I was sort of a transient fan. I used to dip back into it now and again, normally around Christmas time when the latest console game made its way over to Europe, or when new things came out, such as the JSAT Special, Episode of Bardock and the re-animation of 'Plan to eradicate the Saiyans'. In total honesty, the first coming of Kai largely passed me by - I followed it to an extent and then lost interest. The first time I watched the whole thing was only once Funimation were putting out their releases.

SInce 2011, though, I've been pretty active non-stop - but I guess that has been helped in a large way by the fact that in that period, we've had two theatrical films, a prequel Manga, probably the best Dragonball home console game since Budokai 3, and, of course, a new freakin' series!

I was prepping to leave in the summer of '12, but then BOG was announced and I had so much fun with that, and then F was announced and while it wasn't as fun I still enjoyed the ride, and then Super was announced and here I still am. :3 I'm at least sticking around until the end of Super, probably? At the very least until the end of the Uni 6 arc.

I've taken breaks before. I think the longest I went without watching anything Dragon Ball related was a little over a year. This happened twice, but I still played the video games during that time, so I wasn't entirely out of it.

I've been a fan for about 15 years, now and I don't think I can take a very long break from anything Dragon Ball related.

I haven't taken any break from the fanbase ever since I joined it five to six years ago.

I kinda from 06-09. There just really wasn't much new content for me to get into. Plus, there was several other anime that were gaining my interest at that time.

I've taken breaks from the fandom at large before, but from the series itself? I don't think I've ever really taken a break from that.

I mean, I'm not always watching it or always reading it, but it's always there. It's always something I'm a fan of and could easily talk to someone about for hours at a time if given the right opportunity. Then again, I really haven't ever had too long of a break where there wasn't something coming out for me to keep an eye on either. There was finally collecting all of the DVD's. Finally doing the same with the manga. Amidst all that there was always some game or another coming out. Then Kai, and various new little specials here and there. Then Battle of Gods and Resurrection 'F'. Now Super's here. It's never really 'ended' for me, so maybe if we do finally get another dry period where there's not a lot happening and I now already have everything else, I'd experience a burn out of sorts...but I don't see it happening then either really.

2007-2010, with Kai and Raging Blast 2 being the reason I got back, and right now, because BoG and FnF threw me off, I now mostly like the series for half of Z(Saiyan-Cell), GT(Baby-Shadow Dragons), and some of the games. I'll just wait until something big happens from Super or the franchise in general. If not, I'ma just lurk.

I probably stopped being interested in DB around 2001/2002 except for one long-running WIP fanfic I kept checking (finally stopped updating in 2008). But even by 2000 it was more of a secondary interest to my other main anime interests at that point (CLAMP, Kenshin, etc). I had just moved to the US, I think that was part of it. I also moved away from anime fandoms and into LotR (which I had loved for years but with the movie boost..) and Harry Potter at the time.

I had a brief surge in interest before Dragon Ball Evolution, with making-of promotional material, and speculation (which was more fun than the movie ever was, unfortunately). I think I rewatched the whole series (minus movies/GT) and reread it at that point. Also watched JSAT in 2008, but didn't do much else in the way of interest.

When Kai started, then I got reinterested. I watched all of Kai 1.0 in japanese. Then that ended and I was ok, done. I never got back into Kai 2.0 later -- I think the whole music fiasco was part of it, but really it was because I was super into Star Trek at this point. After that, was periodically interested if I saw an interesting bit of fanfic, or when TFS episodes came out, but nothing major.

Eventually when BoG came out on DVD I caught wind of it and watched it, and loved it, but figured it was a one-off. At this point became more reinvolved with fannish things though, like watching TFS, looking for new fanart/fanfiction, cosplay, etc, but only casually. Then I heard of RoF, read Jaco, etc. and now it is now.

I would say between 2001-2008 I really wasn't into Dragon Ball, at least nothing official. So like 7 years? If anyone had asked me, if I was a fan, I would had still said yes -- I mean, I did have my hair aqua colored in a bob for many official photos for a few years then. But I wasn't engaged in "fannish" behavior then. Was also not that into it between 2011 and 2014 -- although I periodically checked the main site for news, and did some fannish things.

No break for me since probably late 90's (Since beginning of Latin American broadcast) and I think I got more attached after GT...

I stopped mid way through the Buu Saga. To this day I have yet to watch all of it but I'm getting to it as I finished the cell saga recently.

Oh, absolutely. I used to browse many, many Dragon Ball sites back in the day, but I stopped actively following the series around 2004/5, I believe. I didn't return until early 2013 for the build-up to Battle of Gods. Though I think the amount of money I spent on merchandise upon my return more than makes up for my absence. Smart financial decisions were not made.

I think I find my interest in the series a lot more passive now. I don't actively seek discussion as much as I used to. I enjoy making general statements about the animation and the story, but my interest in debating areas has totally faded. Those who've been here for a few years will probably remember when I was a real argumentative piece of shit. I generally don't get involved now unless I feel like someone's being unfair or inaccurate. I guess you could say I'm a little more accepting of contrarian views.

I don't really know where my interests will go in the future. I constantly feel like I'm looking for something to replace this series in my life. I want to love another show just as much, and find a community as active as this, but it's impossible. There is something about this series that won't let me go. For how disgusting this fanbase can be, you'll struggle to find a group as passionate. I guess that's a large part of what keeps me coming back. I mean, take a look at what happened when a sub group released the latest film on the same day as its official digital release! They were chewed up across social media, almost unanimously. How many fanbases care enough about the success of their series to oppose something like that? Amazing stuff.

If Universe 6 is as good as I hope it will be, I don't see myself going anywhere soon.

I probably took a 3 year break after completing the series, but I recall in 2010 when it was going around that Hero's was a new anime series, I kept an eye on it, and once those short anime promo's for Heroes got on the net, the rumor got out of control only later to find out it was just a video game.
I think I kept an eye on the series after that because i figured if they went as far as doing Kai, Hero's, and the return special, that they had some new material coming out soon. Then BOG came out, and i've been hooked ever since :D
I'd like to think the whole point of Kai was to introduce a newer generation of fan's to DBZ so they could continue on with Super meaning they at least had some form of new material laid out before even doing Kai.

A few years. But I just was not really active with Dragon Ball. I was not "no fan anymore". Similiar to Pokémon.

I've never really left the series, but then again I guess I was never really what anyone would consider a big fan... Since probably 2000 to 2012/13ish I had always really liked the series and had considered it my favorite manga series, but I never really actively did anything besides buying bits of Dragon Ball related stuff over time and occasionally visiting Kanzentai before it fused with Daizenshuu to become Kanzenshuu. It probably wasn't until the Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods movie was announced that I became a slightly more active fan of Dragon Ball and became a forum member on Kanzenshuu after discovering that a decent chunk of the community doesn't complain about Goku being voiced by Masako Nozawa. Given that I still don't really do anything particularly active like buy every Dragon Ball related thing that comes out or go to cons, I guess I can say that I've just always been an average Dragon Ball fan throughout with anything past 2013 being slightly above average...

Besides the year gap between taken off tv and the season sets, I'd say back in 2013 I quit watching for several months. Just got burnt out at the time.

I kinda left between 2009-2012 with some very occasional visits here and there. Once BOG got announced, I jumped right back in, and now I'm more knowledgable than I've ever been about the series. And here we are today, watching a new weekly TV series. What a good time to be a fan. Unless you don't like the new movies or DBS, because then it becomes a disappointing time be a fan.

I don't think I've ever actively "left" Dragon Ball. I've never particularly lost interest in the franchise or stopped enjoying it. There have been times where other interests came to the forefront and took up more of my time and attention, but Dragon Ball is always somewhere in the back of my mind.

I suppose I recently went through sort of a DB drought for a year or so because of reasons, but it wasn't a matter of disinterest. The flame was obviously alive because I still loosely kept up with DB news, and made sure to buy various new products like the Chouzenshuu, Jaco, and the Japanese release of BOG. Of course I didn't really watch or read them right away, hence the drought.

But yeah, I'll always love Dragon Ball, even if I'm terrible at showing it sometimes. It would probably take something like amnesia to get rid of me.
