Region 4, Dragon Ball Box-Set Review

Post by Kula » Tue Jan 02, 2007 4:16 pm

I recently purchased the 'Dragon Ball Collection: Part 1' box set from Australia. So I'll just give out a bit of information for those considering a purchase. It contains the first 6 sagas that were released individually by funimation.

Image

The cases are standard DVD cases, so the box set isn't too big. Each case contains 2 discs

Image

It's Region 4 and PAL, so you'll need a region free player and a PAL compatible TV/monitor.

The first disc of 'Fortune Teller Baba' has Japanese subtitles only for all episodes except 73, which has dub only subtitles. This mistake was present on the previous issue of this disc and hasn't been corrected. It's not such a big deal to me, because I would never watch the dub with subtitles, and I can put up with dub-titles for just one episode.

It cost £47 altogether including postage. It's good value for money when you consider the price of the individual sagas on Amazon (around $30 each).

The second part is available for preorder at Madman...

and ezydvd...

(I don't think Funi will fix the widescreen issue for the 'Vegeta saga' boxset, so I'll likely cancel my pre-order and put the money towards the second DB box-set.)

I'll definately be getting this. I'm strapped for cash at the moment, but for that price...getting all those episodes...damn, it's a good deal. :)

Out of curiosity, how is the video quality? I'm curious because I hear Madman tends to churn out below-average PAL transfers.

Basically, the quality is similar to the US release, except that it does suffer from the NTSC-PAL problems such as interlacing and what not.

Basically, its a poor transfer on all accounts but it is what it is.

That is a pretty cute box. :D

No, no. That's Violet Taisen. One of the RR generals.

And once again you're welcome. 8) I figured I'd post it here too though in case anyone else didn't know and was wondering.

Looks like a good set, Kula. Seeing how the Red Ribbion Arc wasn't so interesting to me, I might consider picking up episodes involving the world tournaments and the Piccolo Daimou Arc (if they are packaged like this).

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

This set is OOmazing. But then this really sucks for us Americans, cause were most likely never going to get these sets.

So am I right to assume that a region free dvd player wouldn't work anyways because of the whole PAL-dvd-on-an-NTSC-tv thing?

Some region-free DVD players have PAL to NTSC conversion. As a matter of fact, Amazon had some on sale for pretty decent prices! I'm holding out and waiting to see if FUNi will remaster Dragonball as well.

If they do, it will most likely be in widescreen... and that's if they ever get the rights to the first 13 episodes and first movie.

EDIT*

Holy shit, I checked amazon and found out that a tiny little dvd player sitting in my closet collecting dust actually kicks more ass than the one I'm using now... AND it's region free. It's also cheap as hell... this is awesome

I actually hacked my DVD Player to Region Free. It's actually more easy than you may think, and I never though my specific player would be compatible. It's something like...

Do not put a disc in the tray, go to the dvd screen, press 2 3 5 4 3 on the remote, and then you can select which region you want. Region 7 (or something like that) is region free. Pwnage.

A quick Google search will help you out in seeing whether your DVD player could be hacked.

Too bad that doesn't work for me. I tried yesterday and that didn't work. I searched the net and found that I'd need a universal remote or something. I'm just gonna buy a region free dvd player. Anyway, I hope these boxsets will be released in America someday.

Does that mean it does not contain the eps funimation did not release?

Do you actually confirm the subtitle tracks are different for dubtitles and literal subtitles on disc 1 (not disc 2) of the 'Fortune Teller Baba' box set? by displaying both subtitle tracks at once?

The problem was not the second subtitle track been missing, but both subtitle tracks having the same content.

Quick correction here; she's a colonel.

In any case, I would probably buy that if I didn't have most of the DVD's already...and if it came to the U.S..
