Kanzenban
Should I purchase one? So many new things, but there's the language barrier and the fact that it's condensed.

Re: Kanzenban
One thing about manga is that, as long as you know what's going on, you don't really need to know Japanese. I only know a little bit of katakana and a bit of kanji and I can go through my Sailor Moon manga easily.Holy Katana wrote:Should I purchase one? I know a little bit of katana, too, but it's never helped in any of my reading... !B-kun wrote:I only know a little bit of katana

Well, you wouldn't be able to read it, but you could look at it.Holy Katana wrote:Well, I do know quite a bit of kana, and about 20 kanji. But you say that you don't need knowledge of Japanese to read import manga? Okay, I'll take your word for it.
I know this might sound like a radical idea, but...imagine a comic book where all the words in the speech bubbles have been rendered unreadable by a black marker pen. That's what you would be getting.

Re: Kanzenban
It's not condensed... it just has more chapters per volume. So, unless you meant the price by that (since each one is about $9 US before shipping), the "condensed" thing isn't an issue.Holy Katana wrote:Should I purchase one? Wait, I forgot. Condensed means denser, like condensed milk. So, it is condensed.SaiyaJedi wrote:It's not condensed... it just has more chapters per volume. The Kanzenban have picture quality that is far better than any of the other manga releases (especially the Japanese ones, which look like dirt). They have the original color chapters and color chapter title pages (which the english version converts to black and white). They're bigger (you don't have to pull the book's pages back hard to see the parts that are borderline lost in the spine), have new cover art and design, and much better paper (it's not that newspaper-like stuff you get in the old Japanese volumes). They truly are black and white, rather than blackish-grey/some other weird light shade. Not to mention you get more chapters per book, DB art by famous mangakas, and whatever other promo slips they add to them.
If you can afford them, they're MUCH better than any other DB manga releases I've seen. In Japan, they're (I think) normally 933 yen, I pay 12$ each at a local Japanese bookstore.

I knew that. So, you have some? Cool.Alias wrote:The Kanzenban have picture quality that is far better than any of the other manga releases (especially the Japanese ones, which look like dirt). If you (or anyone else here) doesn't want to pay the ridiculous prices they charge for them at Ebay and other online stores (not to mention the average of $12 shipping from Japan), you can check whatever phonebook you've got for a local Japanese supermarket or bookstore. Many of the markets have little bookstores inside with the latest manga. They usually charge no more than a few dollars over the original price.

I go to one, but it doesn't carry manga except for magazines, and Weekly Shounen Jump is always sold out... Why do they not have kanzenban?Alias wrote:If you (or anyone else here) doesn't want to pay the ridiculous prices they charge for them at Ebay and other online stores (not to mention the average of $12 shipping from Japan), you can check whatever phonebook you've got for a local Japanese supermarket or bookstore. It's the third... but yeah, conventions would be a good place to look. Just beware the price-gouging.Sun_Wukong wrote:I have the one with Kuririn on the cover, the 2nd one i believe? Anyway, I definately plan on buying more at Otakon this year, or if I end up going to NYC before then.
