I think 'fat-pack' is just a synonym for digipack.
You do in some cases lose some vertical image,
Some cases, in the "100% of the time" sense of the word

Fatpacks are... like big amaray casings. They hold minimum four discs. Think Batman: The Animated Series (or any of the DCAU) style packaging, or Madman's Beast Wars. They're normally about as thick as two/two and a half DVD cases.
Are digipacks the ones that fold out? Like Veronica Mars or Malcolm in the Middle? If so, yeah, Fatpacks aren't them.
... Maybe later.

More like, "ZOMG WARE IS GOHAN!? YAY MORE PICCOLO HAEND!!11"
Ever wonder why they haven't shown us any action scenes from the
series...when it's primarily an action anime? Hm...
Anyway, I don't care about the series so much as the half-assed explanations. Then again, FUNi has always had quite the stockpile when it came to DBZ in all honesty. 10 years nearly of hearing their bullshit, I just figured they'd have grown up.

I have 45 shots from We Gotta Power and the series itself from the tech trailer on my computer and, really, I'm not hating any of them. I'll try to get them up sooner or later.
You just have to look closely at the trailer to see the series shots. Still underhanded, but people have been claiming ever since the first trailer came out that anime fanboys are all super technotastic. Use some of that stereotypical skill!

Eh, I've seen the trailer, which shows the exact same few shots that the original trailer showed and then (WTF?) magically goes over to being heavily saturated with shots from Movie 8. Which, as stated ad infinitum, was framed for widescreen to begin with.
My thoughts? The trailer speaks for itself. They couldn't even use the series itself to support this new 'cinematic' presentation, so someone over there isn't confident in showing it to us (despite the fact that I've been told they have a copy circulating around the office). The fact that their cleverly crafted explanations of "Oh, you just don't get it, that's all!" didn't work, combined with the initial PR bomb probably means we'll get very little information between now and release.
Here's hoping they prove me wrong, ne?

I hope it turns out well. I mean, it's not like I want them to suck.
I'll probably wait until I hear Mike's review.

They have been digitized, cleaned up and captured at 24 frames a second in 1080p. It is then mastered down to a standard definition 480p format suitable for viewing on regular DVDs,
This obviously means that they're going to keep these 1080p masters for a future release in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, meaning a whole new fucking line of DBZ to buy in the future... So if you think about that, these current releases won't even be worth the time, because in 5 or so years, when dvd becomes as outdated as much vhs has, you'll end up with below-average releases of a huge series. It's like being someone with every vhs FUNi has put out to only hear about these season sets...
You do in some cases lose some vertical image, BUT you now also gain horizontal footage that has never been seen before.
Except on these neat little things called DragonBoxes
While, we would have ultimately been happier with a 4:3 release, this is out of our control and is a decision that FUNimation has made but will present some interesting ways to view DBZ.
This statement just proves that FUNimation is a stubborn company that rules with an iron fist, and forces the poor Australian company to take it or leave it, because they obviously aren't going to make fullscreen masters for the show anytime in this or the next decade... or something ;D

Actually, FUNi are getting
more of the image on the horizontal area than the Dragonboxes, as proven with comparison pictures on this thread that have side-by-side compared the Dragonbox video with the season set trailers and pics FUNi's released.

If anyone was thinking of posting a negative review on Amazon or a similar site, it would probably be cancelled out by 5 star reviews such as this one...

It's a shame that people actually buy into this whole thing without knowing any info whatsoever

While 99.9% to 99.9999999% of this topic on the new remastered box sets has focused soley on the widescreen issue (and also somewhat on the issue of number of eps per disc), I'd like to bring up something almost as important: the presentation once the disc starts playing.
Will this boxset present Dragon Ball Z as a highly-regarded Japanese anime with an available English dub? Or will they continue to present it as an action-packed English adventure with wicked hot new music and the Japanese version tacked on at the end?
In other words, when I pop the disc in and the menu loads up, will I be greeted by a sampling of the Japanese music, along with the correct, Simmons-translated Japanese titles for each episode? Or will it still be "new" English music, with the English dubtitles? If character profiles will be an extra, will FUNi at last use the correct, translated names? Or is English DBZ still the only DBZ that matters to them?
Can we have both? The Ultimate Uncut DVD's do. (English and Spanish.) When the disc first boots up, you can select to view the menus in either English or Spanish (with Spanish defaulting you to the Spanish dub).
So for the new box sets, how about giving the option of English and Japanese? Selecting Japanese will bring up a menu (English-language, of course) consisting of Japanese music, Japanese episode titles, and the Japanese dub as the default. Selecting English will bring up a menu with their English dub music, dub episode titles, and the English dub as the default language.
This set up would please fans of both camps.

Well, if I remember, the trailer kept noting 'the series as it was originally intended'. They also said something about how Dragon Ball Z was one of the most successful Japanese anime of all time (something similar, I think). To me, it sounds like FUNi is regarding the Japanese version first, with the English dub second.

Ofcourse not
It will most likely be all dub titles, new music, and those profiles will contain dub errors (this is also what I fear for their booklet comming with it).
I think the most they might do, is put Chala-head-chala at the title menu or something, but everything will more than likely be amercanized poo.

Good point. But there's still the issue of how much extra stuff each disc can take before the video quality of the episodes starts sucking.
Also, is the amount cropped in these comparison shots (on this thread) accurate? Because I distinctly remember one comparison shot showing that there wouldn't be as much cropped as we're thinking (I think it was that FUNi Kaio/Bubbles shot provided by FUNi), but then we've got these comparison pics with screenshots taken from the trailer and we're shown that Gohan is practically out of the shot in return for the rest of Piccolo's hands. I'm getting mixed signals here...
