I can't help wondering what Funi thinks of this. Maybe they'll at least be relieved that the first English dub of Super won't be on the same level as theirs in terms of understanding the language. This dub wouldn't be able to compete against them the way an Ocean dub would.
Their thoughts on the matter probably depend on where they are at in terms of getting Super, if they still haven't been able to get the rights for Super from Toei I wouldn't be surprised if this news aggravated them, I mean they've been bombarded with people all over the internet asking when their dub is going start and all they've been able to say is that they haven't gotten the rights yet and now news comes out of nowhere of a different English dub. As long as Funi manages to get the rights soonish I doubt it would be anymore than a passing aggravation though. I guess their thoughts on it are also dependent on WHY they haven't been able to get the rights yet, if it's because Toei isn't playing ball this news is probably very frustrating to them.

One of the worse scenarios I can think of is Toei being so hung up on the "wanting to air it on TV in the US" thing even though streaming shows online is the current trend and doubling that up with former locked-in scenarios where they'd be forced to get the remainder of the Buu Kai episodes on TV aired to the end before being allowed to start on Super; or something like that. Even if they were trying to force Funi to air Buu Kai first, it would take months to get through it all because Toonami isn't a 5 days a week block anymore; going once a week through Buu Kai...they'd be behind by over a year!

Or it could be something less complicated than that; it could just be Toei's asking for a ridiculously large sum of money.

I have no doubt Funi can get it on T.V, but maybe Toei wants it on one of the bigger networks and and not just cartoon network.

Bigger network; like CBS or ABC? Disney big? That kind of big? That'd be near-impossible for Funi; not to mention none of the bigger networks air anime blocks. I mean, BOG and F come under 20th Century FOX; what would they want to do? Air it during that Sunday night "Animation Domination" thing FOX has alongside stuff like The Simpsons and Family Guy? There's no way that'd work out. @_@

Or is Toei under the impression we still have an equivalent to their weekend morning animated series blocks? Saturday Morning Cartoons don't exist anymore. If they were looking to roll it out that way they should've made a new series 15 years ago when kids cartoon blocks on Saturday mornings were still at least semi-relevant.

Toonami has been doing well lately and the ratings for it have been much better then it was last year. I doubt we will have to wait until the Buu saga of Kai is over on Toonami to get Super. Unlike GT, we all know the story for the series and we knows what happens at the end of DBZ. Toonami said nothing that they can't have Kai and Super on the same time slot together like Kai at 12:00 and Super at 12:30. Maybe Super can have Kai be move to 11:30 PM and Super at 12:00 AM. Even if Super comes out in 2017 then it will still sell well. A lot of people still haven't seen the show yet and haven't follow it. We are just a niche group of fans who are stay close to the Japanese versions while most American fans do not.

Yeah, I'm hoping we get a situation where they air Kai and Super back to back. I doubt Toonami (US) would be dumb enough to think they need to finish Kai before airing Super, especially since Super will definitely have hiring ratings than Kai.

I definitely think the belatedness is all Toei's doing. I'd hope Toonami would be able to give a slot to both, if Toei is cool with them airing both. Which slot could they open up?

I'm sure we're a niche within a niche. I see so many more twitter and tumblr posts about Kai on Saturday compared to posts about Super.

All sorts of anime come on and off of Toonami, they air a lot of 12-26 episode anime, so they could time it with when one of those ends and shuffle the line up a bit so that the block either opens with Super and leads into Kai or with Kai and leads into Super.
And yeah, I agree that it seems like it's Toei, I'm positive Funimation wishes they had a simulcast going and could get the dub going as soon as possible.

I don't see why they can't. I know they want other shows to get more views too, but Jason DeMarco (One of the main producers of Toonami) said on ask.fm that Toonami could be move to a early time slot if they keep on getting good ratings and if the demand for it is high enough. Not to mention Attack on Titan Season 2 comes out next year too, Toonami could find away to have a time slot for that show too since Toonami help Attack on Titan become more mainstream in the US.

There's always the possibility that if FUNi gets Super and has it ready to go on Toonami before Kai is finished up, that they could put Super on Toonami, and Kai might just get moved to the front of the weekly Adult Swim blocks. They already air the previous week's Kai episode as the first show on Adult Swim each Saturday, so it's feasible maybe.

Toei most likely wants the show on a popular channel (not Disney XD/Nicktoons) at a time kids can watch. Saturday at 12AM on Adult Swim isn't that.

Dragon Ball market is different in the US then it is in Japan. Funimation likes to keep the series uncut which is why the series is market to 13+ in the last 10 years since the Ultimate Uncut episodes. Super will be on Toonami in the US when they air it.

I can believe that of Toei. What channel like that still exists though? Regular Disney Channel? Regular Nickelodeon? One of the anchor networks I mentioned that don't even air kids shows on weekday afternoons like CBS, ABC, FOX, NBC? If that's the case, they're looking at it anachronistically; life just isn't like that anymore in the U.S. We're all about streaming shows online now. It's like someone asking where your cassette player is so they can show you their mixtape. Toei why so out of touch? T_T
I genuinely feel bad for people waiting on the dub; I'm subs all the way now, but I did like the dub at one time and I imagine I'd be crazy with frustration if the reason Funi couldn't get to work on Super was because higher ups at Toei were under the impression that 2015 worked the same way as 1998. @_@

I've seen more than a handful of episodes of Super. There's nothing there that would require edits. Even if it did, have you forgotten that before Kai aired on Adult Swim it was airing on two child focused venues in the US?

I'm not saying Super won't air on Toonami. I'm saying that Toei likely believes Super is bigger than that. They most likely want a mainstream toy deal (which is something Dragon Ball currently lacks in North America) and to create new fans. Airing the show at 12AM in a block that feeds on nostalgia will almost certainly not result in either of those.

There is a promble with that since action shows for kids are pretty much dead expect for Power Rangers, TMNT, Marvel cartoons (even some of those don't do so great with sales) and Transformers. I don't see any channels on TV in the US besides Toonami that would want Super. Nick Toons was lucky to have Kai since Adult Swim originally turn down Kai in 2010.

I could guess a few episodes in the RoF arc would have to be altered/toned down after last night's violence killed 150+ people in Paris. Most example was Freeza destroying North City after his arrival on Earth. Toei might consider altering a few scenes a bit.

What you said would only make sense if that tragedy happened in Japan instead of France.
