What was the point of making a new series/title?

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

What was the point of making a new series/title?

Post by GI_Judd2287 » Sat Jan 06, 2007 3:02 pm

I'm referring to changing the anime title from Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z. I've seen other Japanese series do this (Sailor Moon, Pokemon, Tenchi). From what I understand, Toriyama named it "Z" because he wanted the comic to end soon and the "Z" chapter would be the ending. But that doesn't explain why they wanted to change the name in the first place. So what was the point?

I don't know why, I think it would be better keeping the series together. I guess it's better organized in parts :?

But yeah, the same goes for Naruto Z...err...I mean Hurricane Chronicles.

The manga name didn't change, only the anime.

Well, you must admit that DBZ took a major departure from the traditional DB theme. DBZ was more sci-fi compared to the mythical DB.

The mood also changed, from a few people dying because of Piccolo Daimao, the whole Earth died to Kid Buu, Cell absorbed many people and Freeza destroyed planets.

Yeah, I think I read in an interview with him that he chose to go the Sci-Fi route, because he saw the first Alien movie. I could be wrong though.
But yes, he has stated he did that to show it was coming to an end.

It's no more or less a "whole new series" than DBZ was compared to DB. It's a very similar situation.

It would have been nice if they had just kept the Viz Manga labeled as "Dragonball" all the way through instead of changing the name of its volumes too. Even with the Anime, the same style is used. Look at the 23rd Budokai episodes compared to the first Raditz Episodes. They look the same. The "Z" series didn't start to change art direction until the Freeza saga. Up until then, the Z stuff still had the more rounded edges of Dragonball.

When I refer to it as Manga or Anime, I typically just call the whole thing "Dragonball" anymore. Although I still use the abbreviation "DBZ" sometimes to refer to the whole thing. They are more or less interchangeable in my mind. I really only draw a real difference between Dragonball/DBZ and Dragonball GT. GT was different enough to be considered a whole new series, even though it continued off of the old one. DB and DBZ are the same thing as far as I am concerned.

Ahh, well, if they kept it as Dragonball for all 42 volumes, stupid Americans would say they're wrong or something dumb like that.

Precisely. The ignorant masses would all be like, "hey, wherez dbz?" And we would laugh at them gleefully.

Ahh, the good times we could have had... (^^)
I'm pretty sure in the German manga translation, it's kept as Dragonball throughout all 42 volumes.

I guess the point of making a new title id to draw in more people. Its propoganda to make you watch or buy a product that you think is new. Dragonball and Dragonball Z where both mainly the same thing, but they was just older. And i think its a good idea to keep the same name unless you change the main characters or basic storyline. Like, in the game DragonQuest, why does the hero turn supersaiyan? Ithink that its not right, because its not part of DBZ besides the same creator.

He does? How do they explain that?

Well, in the newest one you mean? It's not "Super Saiya-Jin", but a like state. And Troiyama-Sensei did not create Dragon Quest, he did the character designs.
