Were Fusions just a pointless addition to the franchise?
Re: Were Fusions just a pointless addition to the franchise?
Movie 12 completely justifies the introduction of fusion to the franchise.
It's just a shame it ends up making the power relationships between characters really confusing and led to a lot of weird idea's from the fanbase over the years. Oh well. Still worth it for badass Gogeta.

Honestly, everything after the Freeza arc was a pointless addition to the franchise.

The rest of the series just doesn't strike me like it used to, not quite sure why though.

The Buu saga has more bad ideas than all of GT combined--fusion being one of them. Thank goodness it was executed well enough to be entertaining, at least.

What? The Buu saga had plenty of good ideas especially the anime:fadeddreams5 wrote:The Buu saga has more bad ideas than all of GT combined--fusion being one of them. Thank goodness it was executed well enough to be entertaining, at least.
- Pikkon tournament in Otherworld was fantastic
- The Great Saiyaman episodes with Gohan in High School were a nice comedic slice of life portion of the anime
- The world tournaments return was a good idea, nice intro to Goten and Trunks and bringing Satan back
- Dabura was a fantastic villain
- Fat Buu was fun
- Gohan and Gotenks training led to many great moments as was the fight
- Vegito is cool
- Goku defeating Kid Buu with the Spirit Bomb using all of Earth's inhabitants was a nice "finale" to the series.

I didn't say it didn't have good ideas (I don't count the Other World filler as part of it, btw).precita wrote:What? However, Kid SSJs, Fusion, SSJ2 being a thing, SSJ3 (as cool as it may look), Gohan's mystic/ultimate crap, and Gohan's lack of training were all terrible ideas that have negatively impacted the story and entire franchise, in my opinion; they're a plague.
Mind you, from a business standpoint, they're anything but. Dat merchandise...
Edit: Actually, I take back fusion. The concept is cool. How it's executed, not so much.

If the point is to entertain, the answer to the thread is "no."

Well of course the Majin Boo arc had more bad ideas than GT, because GT didn't come with enough original ideas of their own to be even judged as whether they were good or bad. Most of what GT came up with was just horribly rehashed from previous arc in DB, Z and anime filler. The only original idea GT came up with was the Shadow Dragons, and they even managed to fuck that up.fadeddreams5 wrote:The Buu saga has more bad ideas than all of GT combined--fusion being one of them. Even if they were rehashes, that doesn't mean they weren't better and god forbid the writers use material from anime filler. I like the idea of taking and expanding on something they created. And the Evil Dragons arc wasn't "F'ed up". It wasn't great, but hardly deserving of the harsh criticism you are giving it. And you criticize GT for using old ideas, but it's not like Toriyama didn't take his ideas from other stories.

There's no way the Buu saga has worse ideas than GT. Buu progressed the series forward, and while it got silly, it never got boring or insulting.

Almost everything I mentioned from the Buu saga heavily impacted or influenced everything that came after it in this franchise, including Dragon Ball GT. You say "progressed the series," I say jumped the shark to the point that people have claimed the saga is an intentional self-parody. Mind you, I still enjoy it far, FAR more than GT, Super, and modern DBZ. It was entertaining.precita wrote:There's no way the Buu saga has worse ideas than GT. GT has bad ideas, like Kid Goku, the blackstar dragon balls, and Super 17, but none of that stuff is as significant as kids being able to go SSJs, characters being able to fuse with a stupid dance to kill anyone, SSJ levels being numbered so fans can create imaginary SSJ1000xyz transformation art, and Gohan being shafted and made a punk. If anything, GT had a lot of good ideas, only horrifically executed, so it's sort of the opposite of the Buu saga, imo.

Re: Were Fusions just a pointless addition to the franchise?
The Buu saga made sense because Buu was sealed away for millions of years, and there made sense to be one final ultimate power in the universe for the fighters to stop. The introduction of Supreme Kai and the other Kai's was also great world building. Its hard to believe King Kai was the only one we ever saw up until the end of the Cell saga. We finally got to understand how the Otherworld worked.
Power levels weren't too ridiculous. Gohan goes his ultimate power unlocked, Goku reached a new form while dead, Vegito was the strongest at the time, etc.
Yeah, Trunks and Goten probably should have never been Super Saiyans and only Gotenks should have gone Super Saiyan, but I can see why it happened.

Re: Were Fusions just a pointless addition to the franchise?
That's a bit of a brilliant quote. The Buu arc was riddled with bad idea's, but was executed with such boldness and humor that it forced itself to work. GT had plenty of great idea's going on, but pulled each one into such repetitive boringness that almost nobody gives a crap about it.fadeddreams5 wrote:If anything, GT had a lot of good ideas, only horrifically executed, so it's sort of the opposite of the Buu saga, imo.

I disliked the "Kid Trunks" and Goten characters anyway, and I had absolutely no interest in Gotenks.
I really liked Vegito though. I liked the whole part where Goku were desperately looking for somebody he could fuse with, Gohan dropping the earrings, Vegeta only finding out at the last minute that it was a permanent fusion, etc. I found that all very good. The fighting candy part was awful though.
Generally I don't think I'd have minded at all if they'd never introduced fusion.

Kid Trunks was going to be there either way since his character would already be born and existed. I always figured Goten was created so Trunks had someone to be friends with. Goten was never really used as a "mini-Goku" all that much since he had very little screentime as an individual character
