Re: What writing decision would make you swear off the serie
The depressing truth is that DB/Z was magical because it was a fever dream drawn by an imaginative wage slave, working at a Dickensian pace, and laced with boyhood issues he was working out day by day on the page. Kinda like an inspired sex story dashed off as "junk" by the writer. The new stuff can never have that, and that's why it can't even get away with blue hair whereas the old stuff could trash Gohan, attempt to character assassinate Vegeta for an entire saga, make Super Saiyans mundane, replace Vegetto with the Spirit Bomb Boo kill without shame....
I don't hate the new stuff, because it's so earnest in its confused efforts to please, but it doesn't really matter if its ideas are good or bad.

Also character retcons that change their history. I absolutely despise what they did with Bardock and Goku's origin, but since that just happened in specials or manga its easily ignorable and you can consider it non-canon.
If anything like that happens in Super I won't know what to make of it. Hell I dislike Vegeta having a younger brother that popped out of nowhere that he never talked about, but it doesn't seem like we'll ever see him again anyway.

Swear off the franchise? Nah, that's a little extreme. Swear off the current series for a few arcs to come back later? Yeah the BoG and RoF adaptations kinda did that for me already. Before anyone jumps on me, no it's not cause of animation or any silly reason like that. I just don't agree with the idea of starting the first Dragon Ball series in a while with retellings of two movies that are still fresh in our minds. It feels like wasted potential/resources to me. Keywords there, To me.
I'll probably start watching super once the RoF adaptation ends but outside of that...I actually haven't had much interest with super due to the writing decisions so far. Here's hoping for the future.

Going on hiatus. Too much stuff in RL to deal with for me to keep up with posts here for now. Was fun, hope you all have a nice day and future! Volt signing off.

Dragon Ball Evolution pretty much embodies everything that would send me away from the Dragon Ball franchise. Luckily that will never happen to the greater franchise.

I endured Fucking DB Minus I can endure anything....Oh, but well, if ultimately the show gives up on bring somewhat dark or tense moments like it has before (DB having a child killed onscreen with demons killing every warriors and their king releasing all criminals and making evil legal... don't tell me that's not dark) Then it might loosing me, it's bad enough that apparently nobody can bleed anymore.

I think I know what would make me hate Super even more:
- Gag-orientated flashbacks of the saiyans' lives under Frieza's rule, especially anything related to Vegeta acting like a goofball during that period.
- A Minus anime adaptation.

You could say that. At this point they should just reboot the whole thing.MajinMan wrote:So does this mean that you've quit following the series?Lord Exor wrote:Revival of F.

Re: What writing decision would make you swear off the serie
I'd have to agree with the notion of a grimdark take. I mean, the occasional special is fine: the Bardock and Trunks specials are proof of that. But for the series proper? Hell no. That's not what DB's all about. DB's all about having fun, always improving, and feel-good shounen spirit. Don't get me wrong; DB can and should have dramatic moments so we have a story we can take seriously. But I don't want Nolan Batman dramatic, either. You can have drama and seriousness without entirely losing that fun; just look at the MCU. Those movies know how to tell a good story while still knowing how to have fun, and that's what I want for DB. None of this "ermergherd blood and guts and social commentary and this is so dark and kewl and stuffs"; doing that with DB just wouldn't feel right to me. And I'm not even entirely against DB doing social commentary, so long as it's through Toriyama-esque humor that fits with the series rather than Nolan-level subtext and speeches. But still, I'm not begging for that to happen, either, and that would probably be hard to do, anyways. I just want DB to keep being fun action, adventure, and comedy that can bring smiles to people of all ages.

What "good stories" are told from the MCU? It's all dazzling set pieces and witty banter, with substance, drama, and pathos completely marginalized.

I'd never swear off the entire franchise cause the manga,DB&Z will always be good but I probably won't be watching Gt's 1st arc again and if every arc in Super gets a movie then I won't have any reason to watch it as well.
If there's one thing the new stories are severely lacking it's serious moments.OmegaRockman wrote:DB can and should have dramatic moments so we have a story we can take seriously. But I don't want Nolan Batman dramatic.

July 9th 2018 will be remembered as the day Broly became canon.
Re: What writing decision would make you swear off the serie
So far, the only series i dropped, and refuse to watch again is Dragon Ball Kai (To be more specific, i refuse to watch after SSJ Goku vs Freeza fight): It supposed to be way closer to manga then Z, i've tolerated Vegeta meeting SSJ Goku on Namek, cutting manga material for filler sake, but when i saw they kept Freeza and company in Hell bit, and how much filler the kept in Buu Saga, it was literally last straw, if Toei didn't even try at this point, i will stick to Z/Manga thank you.
As for Super, i like Dragon Ball going several years later after 100 episodes or so, if they won't go to Uub/Pan material after that, and still stick to Buu saga period of time, i might drop it.

The Avengers have pretty much ruined movie going audiences. If you're not snarking shit up Whedon style 100% of the time and being stupid or generic as hell, you're automatically grim dark emo Nolan-ness that only death metal listening 12 year olds could possibly like. Because everyone CLEARLY finds the exact same thing fun.Lord Exor wrote:What "good stories" are told from the MCU? When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Re: What writing decision would make you swear off the serie
You know, if you've managed your way through the manga, 153 episodes of Dragon Ball, 291 episodes of Dragon Ball Z, and any of GT or the movies and you've enjoyed it, I'd be pretty surprised if one decision, plot point, arc, or even series (say Super) would basically make you go "F this. I'm done with Dragon Ball forever". At the end of the day the original material will always be there. Nobody has to like any of the new content and it shouldn't change how you feel about what has came before it.
Re: What writing decision would make you swear off the serie
Not really a writing decision, ie something having to do with the story, and the Japanese version will always be there anyway.Lunatic Fringe wrote:Having Linda Young replace Chris Ayres.

Eh, I wouldn't say that. I said multiple times when F was in production, half-jokingly, half-serious, that if Freeza turned good, I'd quit the series.ekrolo2 wrote:If I can stick around after F, I think I can handle anything.

Yeah, but this time it's a villain with a very direct connection to the heroes.ekrolo2 wrote:He wouldn't be the first remorseless, irredeemable mass murderer to do that.Doctor. wrote:Eh, I wouldn't say that.
