A hint from goku ?

Its has been a while since i have watched this episode but i have always wondered about something.It was one of the episodes between goku and gohan finishing their training in the time chamber and the start of the cell tournament .In this episode gohan met a girl and her grandfather and he also smashed a dome that was supposed to protect a village from cell.Anyway to get to the point,Goku arrived towards the end and met the grandfather .I can't remember exactly what was said but basically the grandfather said [quote]"He (Gohan) is strong just like his father "then goku's face changed from a smile to a more serious face and he said [quote]don't tell him .The Grandfather was a martial artist and may have been able to sense Gohan's strength. Was this a hint that Gohan was allot stronger than most people would have expected when they first watched the saga ,Maybe hinting he could be stronger than even Goku ( The best chance of victory over cell) or was this nothing really.I am sorry from the mini essay but i found it hard to explain what i meant without using loads of words .

There were many hints all the way back to Gohan's first appearence. In episode 1, How does he get all the way up that tree?(first sign of ki control) In episode 3, He gives signifigant damage to raditz that even his father couldn't. Skip to the namek saga, when enraged, he manages to make Freeza(2nd form) cough up blood. Vegeta comments that the boy could be the legendary super saiyan. The series was supposed to be about Gohan becoming the defender of earth, something I think they should have had happen in the end(Gohan defeating Buu).

Goku was most certainly implying that Gohan was the stronger between them, but that he shouldn't know yet.
But I don't quite see how the grandfather... Lao did the dub call him? knew of Goku... though I might have missed something. *clearly either a DB reference or a wannabe DB reference*

At the end of the episode Goku came looking for gohan and arrived shortly after the fighting had stopped .This was when the Grandfather met Goku .

Well if they live in the same general area, perhaps they'd met a couple times before. I haven't seen the episode in a while (if ever) but wasn't Gohan initially sent to the villiage to pick up groceries or something? That could possibly be the closest villiage to the Son household, and they might visit regularly. Chi-Chi's gotta go shopping for all that food somewhere, right?

Someone who knows more about the episode should check.

He probably remembered him from the Saiyans or when he saved the world from Piccolo.

Who IS that grandfather guy anyway?
i've been wondering if he was one of the competitors at the 22nd or 21st Tenkaichi Budoukai...but I cant think who fits the bill.

I don't believe it to be quite to the degree that you're saying, Goku still was the main character up until he told Gohan to fight Cell, in which case Gohan dorks out over 7 years and the focus shifts back to Goku in the end.

Anyway, as for the topic at hand. Filler scenes in the Pre-Cell Games drop a ton of hints. Not to mention there is that (canon) scene in Korin tower where Gohan is confused after Goku's 50% Power Up.

I joined Daizenshuu today and have had some of these questions in my head.I guess I should decide on one thread and stick with it before starting another one,sorry I am just getting used to things.I have been reading through these questions for weeks now whilst on my lunch break in work.I thought I knew a good deal about Dragonball Z but this place takes it to a different level.

I guess it does, but if you really like the show and always want to find out more about it, here's the place to be. It's good though because most of the members are pretty mature and give good opinions on things.

Gohan was quite clearly stronger than Goku at the Cell Game, that being before he transformed into Super Saiyan Level 2. I thought it was pretty obvious since right off the bat Gohan was able to dodge blows from Cell that Goku could not. Cell had to use speed he didn't against Goku to catch Gohan. There's also the whole "ton of implications leading up to that throughout the series" thing, along with Goku saying it himself.
