It wasn't about changing Funi's direction, though. It was about talking to the audience of the show about the problem of censorship and poor adaptation, and being a centralized place for people to come to for information about it. It was about approaching a huge problem in the anime industry and it honestly did help start a movement for better, more accurate dubs.ABED wrote:It was a pretty naïve quest to think that one site was going to change FUNi's direction.

You are giving it way too much credit.KaiserNeko wrote:It wasn't about changing Funi's direction, though. Re: Ree vs. DBZ Uncensored
Mmm, I dunno know about that. I don't know that I would necessarily refer to DBZ Uncensored as the sole reason we have good dubs today (nor did Kaiser, of course)...but in all honesty, I don't think FUNimation would have changed their ways if there wasn't such a vocal online movement talking about how unsatisfying and, in certain cases, insulting the changes were. I think the site was influential--if not necessarily the sole reason--in beginning that movement. It's also important to note that this was before fansubs over the internet were common, back in the days of DBZ Uncensored, to watch DBZ in Japanese, one either had to go to Japan or buy VHS fansubs through semi-shady means. So it was useful to have a website chronicling all that was wrong with it.ABED wrote:You are giving it way too much credit.KaiserNeko wrote:It wasn't about changing Funi's direction, though. A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Ree vs. DBZ Uncensored
I really don't think I am. I've been in this fandom since 1997, and I've followed it's growth. While it may not have been the most maturely put together site and message, it was one that needed to be screamed from the mountaintops. It helped start a lot of conversations and influenced many other sites to comment on and explore the censorship of anime in the U.S. I saw the landscape change and the crowds gathering to demand better, and a huge influence in that was DBZ Uncensored.ABED wrote:You are giving it way too much credit.KaiserNeko wrote:It wasn't about changing Funi's direction, though. I've been around this fandom for the same amount of time. I was there, and while it seems like it was popular, that was a drop in the bucket of the overall fandom.KaiserNeko wrote:I really don't think I am. Well, I suppose we have conflicting viewpoints on the matter then.ABED wrote:I've been around this fandom for the same amount of time. I guess we could get into a pissing contest of "yeah huh" and "nuh uh", but I'm 30, and I'm getting to old for this shit as they say.Well, I suppose we have conflicting viewpoints on the matter then.

I'm 30 too, and I have to say that I agree that these sites did help influence Funimation and other Anime companies to provide more accurate translations. Where do you think the demand came from if not these sites? There certainly weren't people protesting outside Funimation's headquarters demanding changes, so something had to tell them that there was a demand for uncensored presentations.ABED wrote:I guess we could get into a pissing contest of "yeah huh" and "nuh uh", but I'm 30, and I'm getting to old for this shit as they say.Well, I suppose we have conflicting viewpoints on the matter then.

As a latino-version first time viewer and as a original-japanese-version lover, I only have two words about Funimation's utter horrible DBZ dub:
MONDO COOL.
That's right boys; Mondo Cool.

Re: Ree vs. DBZ Uncensored
There were a lot of factors, and perhaps these sites played a part, but a very small one. First off, technological change made it feasible to put the subtitled version out, and then there's the internal reasons. Sabat and then Cook who pushed for a more accurate product, not merely for the fans, but for their own benefit. They liked to keep the products more accurate to the original. And no, you don't need someone to tell you there's a demand for uncut presentations.I'm 30 too, and I have to say that I agree that these sites did help influence Funimation and other Anime companies to provide more accurate translations. I don't know how to say this any clearer - the audience of these sites is miniscule compared to the overall audience.

Re: Ree vs. DBZ Uncensored
I thought the commentary was pretty good, though I agreed with some things and disagreed with others. I wasn't aware that writers were still using "the next dimension" in their stories, though. I wonder if any webcomics do the same to this day (I doubt it, but you never know).
