Which saga/series/special/movie has your favorite art?

Post by Wezenheim » Wed Dec 02, 2015 11:53 am

The Dragon Ball anime has seen a lot of different art styles and looks over the years, whether it be from the main series or the movies and TV specials. I wanted to see what style really stands out to all of you as your favorite and why. It can be any piece of animated Dragon Ball, even video game cutscenes if you want. If there is a certain arc that you feel had the coolest look/colors/etc., you can just point out that arc as well. For example, in the Z portion of the show, I always liked the colors and backgrounds of the Boo saga.

It might be an unpopular choice, but I really enjoy how Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return! looks.
I love the colors and how the characters are drawn. They aren't too glossy, but they have some pop and life. The only problems I have with the special's art is that the hair colors aren't always consistent and the Super Saiyan hair is pretty darn bright:
The special's art isn't always perfect, but I really enjoyed the direction they were going with and with fine tuning it'd be darn near perfect for me.

As a second favorite, I gotta say that I really enjoy the art of the new movies. Yamamuro's designs are awesome, but I imagine that they are very difficult to replicate on a week to week basis without the proper team. The classic anime's designs will always have a special place in my heart and it still looks pretty good today, but I actually like how the new stuff looks when it's done properly.

Remember, it can be any animated Dragon Ball thing.

GT had the best color choices and designs

but buu arc had the best coloring. The colors were perfect, yeah it would have been nice to see cyan ki blasts like from GT,but when bu usaga did a color,it was done right. THe problem modern Z has is al lthe colros are digital and thus awefull. It needs animation cels again.

I didn't always like how characters were drawn in GT, but they were quite serviceable and I do enjoy a lot of the colors they used.

Mystical Adventure hands down. It's stylish and bright. The characters have amazing designs and generally look great and it probably has the greatest landscapes in the whole series.

Yeah some desgins were downgrades, while still good, vegeta for example is a downgrade. Do you mean the color choices (like how they actually used previously unused colors like teal and cyan and stuff) or do you mean you like color of the colors? by that I mean the like how the color of pink buu is when in animation cels is MUCH different then the digital version in super.

A little bit of both. I think GT was too dark sometimes (dark as in color and lighting) but they used a lot of colors we didn't see much of before and I like the more "space like" aspect of the pallet. The Goku/Ledgic fight for instance looked very nice in my opinion.

Very good choice! Mystical Adventure does look very good.

I agree about GT being too dark, but SUper is way to bright and glossy. Like everyone but Beerus looks sweaty all the time with the shine to their faces.

I agree that I don't like the shine, but I love the amount of detail in the drawings. That's why I like how Yo! Son Goku and Friends looks. It's more detailed and good looking while not having the shiny skin.

Yeah son goku is miles ahead of super and battle of gods, but the colors in vegito vs buu is perfect IMO. I just miss DBZ using animation cels....

On it's good episodes, definitely the Buu Saga. Followed by the 23rd Tournament

My favorite in long serialization is probably the good-looking episodes of the Boo arc. The designs and details were really on-point by that time, across a number of studios, and there's a high amount of style and energy present.

That said, I also really like GT/the 10th anniversary film, and love the manga-inspired look of Yo! Son Goku and Friends Return.

Yo son goku is manga inspired? I never understood that term. They said ultimate tenkaichi was meant to look more like the manga but I don't see it in either case.

Also what IS the animation they used for the 10th anniversary/dr slump movie with goku? I mean the colors are so much darker. The animation is different then GT's and Z's and Ball's. But it's nothing like modern dbz like super and BOG. It's like the middle child of their animation processes.

Yeah, the Boo arc definitely features my favorite stuff from the main TV series when it was at its best. I probably like the overall look of that arc better than Super, but when it comes to character drawings I loved what we saw in Battle of Gods and 'F'. When they weren't CGI, of course. I of course still don't care for the shine and shading of the new stuff, but when characters are actually on model they look pretty good.

The Janemba & Hirudegarn movies also look pretty good.

The colors are much closer to Toriyama's color chapters, as are the line-art backgrounds.

I don't believe it's the same in the Dr. Slump appearances, but the 10th anniversary film is right in line with GT, albeit with a slightly darker palette.

I disagree. I think it's a different program and it doesn't seam to fit manga colors to my knowledge.

The Majin Boo arc was definitely the most consistent in terms of good art for me. I also love the artistic direction DBZ Movie 1, DBZ Movie 9, DBZ Movie 12 and The Path To Power

Though I highly favored the Saiyan Arc's art style the best, the Cell Saga had its ups with detail and preciseness:

Image
This picture gives off a sentimental eruption of fury and nature at its best. In the manga, there weren't any tears, which is sad since I find beauty in these tears of vengeance and pain.

Image
For such a small prince, he looks mighty tough and a bit intimidating doesn't he?

Image
This scene cleverly illustrates the mood, emotions, and the strife to just keep going forward! Awesome detail! (This image may have been altered or part of Kai, so I apologize. However, the illustration is basically the same as it was in Z)

These are beautiful pieces...though...the Cell Saga does have a whole multitude of ugly and blocky art due to the animation budget perhaps... (or laziness, but especially the animation teams fault)

Image
Example. Dear Lord have mercy...

Anyways, I prefer the good ol' traditional art from the 80's-90's.

I do not own images.

23rd Budokai and Saiyan arc both have amazing art and animation. I think the first half of the Freeza saga looks great as well.

Not exactly the fairest example, really. It's an insanely zoomed in shot milliseconds before a well drawn Goku pops in. Having little detail for the background characters is very normal.
But yeah, the series has always been inconsistent. Such is the nature of longrunning anime.

Well I guess you're right, it is a little unfair...fault on my part entirely. I mean I put it up there in the first place not because of detail, but because of how disproportionate and blocky the characters look. But hey, animation isn't easy.
