Did Super have a normal girl get beaten to an inch of her life ? Did Super have an old couple get shot to death ? Did Super have a dog nearly die from getting shot at ? Did Super have a tournament guy's head explode ? Did Super have someone get his head punched off ? Didn't think so cause all it does is turn every scene into an unfunny gag.
It had Tagoma being tortured on-screen. It had Vegeta (and king) being squashed like a bug. It had Goku being pierced through and his face turn pale. It had Gohan almost die from being pierced. More violence does not equal a more serious tone, and a serious tone does not equal quality. That's the kind of mentality that makes people think that garbage like Akame ga Kill is a good series.
fadeddreams5 wrote:I'm saying Vegeta didn't really lower himself in GT.
Well, fine. But him lowering himself is good for the character. You may not like the way he lowered himself, but that doesn't really matter, because the mere thought that Vegeta would lower himself to get something would already signify character development. I still think that him using a machine is lowering himself, but whatever really, I don't care nearly enough about GT to rewatch that scene.
This boost in Super made all the ones in DBZ minuscule by comparison, as well as cheapened this SSJG thing, which was lame to begin with.

By warming up, I'm referring to his demeanor towards them. As in, that "tsundere" thing. It's one thing to be reserved, like Piccolo, but the way he's portrayed really is a little childish.
That's because every time a boost happens in this series, it makes all the others before it look minuscule by comparison. Toriyama wrote himself to a corner when he introduced power levels, and he's never, ever gonna write himself out of it.

He's supposed to look childish. It's supposed to be endearing that he's hanging around with them despite his personality.
The shock effect was actually greater in Super because the episode preview in DBZ spoiled Freeza's return. Another scene to compare would be the one where Freeza kills Dende. Case in point, Super didn't attempt to evoke any sort of emotion in that scene. It just sort of happened, and then Piccolo instantly resuscitated him...
Are you sure that happened? I think the Genkidama + SS Goku happened in the same episode, but whatever really.

It didn't? More like you didn't feel any emotion. But the scene TRIED to invoke despair and tension, clearly, what with Gohan being the one who got shot after his speech about wanting to protect his family, his heart not working and Piccolo's extreme concern over him, not to mention that Goku and Vegeta weren't and are still not accessible. It just didn't work for you because you already saw the film and know exactly how this is gonna play out in the end despite some minor differences with Tagoma's character.
It was a one second scene that perfectly subverted any expectations. When you actually expect this to happen at any time, it's not funny. In Super, I expect it all the time.

lol. See, this would actually be funny.
I don't understand your standards of what's funny at all, lol. What you'd find funny, I'd find annoying and something that'd kill the entire scene.
That's because nothing relevant ever happens in this series!
This is just blatant hyperbole.
The fight's meaning is the same as the one in BoG, which was supremely better, and had less or no idiocy cutting off the drama.
No it didn't. The fight in BoG was mainly about Goku's pride and him trying to reconcile his Saiyan side with his hero side. The fight in Super is about two battle-addicted idiots fighting it out at full power and becoming friends through their fists. BoG had Beerus becoming Goku's friend, but he became so because of Goku's words during the fight, not because of Goku's ability like in Super. The fights have a different meaning, different tone, different moments, they're not similar, Super cut out Goku's characterization for a reason, to focus on Beerus instead.

He's "lowering" himself so frequently, I'm starting to think he likes it. I sense no sorrow or regret from the prince; he just goes with the flow to get his way. He'll gladly give Whis a full-body oil massage if it means surpassing Goku, at this point.

Yeah, but look at SSJ3. That was practically the mortal cap, as the Kaioshin and Kibito shit their pants at the thought of someone being able to generate ki that could be sensed in their planet. Fusion was a practical way to surpass even that, and I excuse Gohan cause I'm biased and he's special. Then came a god that made fusion and SSJ3 seem like fodder, and his servant was stronger. I forgive this because of the explanation they gave regarding their status, as well as the unique sort of ki they possessed. The only way Goku could reach their level was by undergoing a ritual, which was a cool concept. Do I like the ritual itself? Hell no, but its existence implied this was a realm of power unreachable by any conventional means. Making Vegeta reach that level by simply training cheapened everything, from SSJ3 to SSJG. It was was also incredibly lazy. Not to mention, Frieza's training. If this 5th mystery fighter is also a mere mortal from universe 7 who trained a lot, that is also incredibly stupid. They had something fresh and unique going on, and then ruined it. Following this trend, Piccolo and Buu will also become gods by training for 2 weeks.

It's not endearing to me. Not the way they're executing it, anyways.

I think they're the same episode in Kai. Not in DBZ though.

Even after watching the movie, I didn't expect that. Honestly, I think it has to do with the music. Also, the scene focused more on Tagoma than Gohan. There was little tension too, as Piccolo quickly resuscitated him. It was just... meh. When Piccolo was pierced (Frieza and Cell), or Krillin (Frieza), or Yamcha (android 20), it created a genuine feeling of dread.
I don't understand your standards of what's funny at all, lol. What you'd find funny, I'd find annoying and something that'd kill the entire scene.
What you mentioned would ruin the scenes and be completely inappropriate for this particular series, but it's funny too. lol. Just imagine a pause of silence after Gohan gets pierced, and then the cast starts laughing. The credit just roll. It's fucked up, but probably how many people feel when these things happen to Gohan nowadays.

And Vegeta just farting out of nowhere is like Frieza taking a poop on Vegeta in Dragonzball PeePee. xD

...Don't question my sense of humor!

BoG did it better, then.

Gods have appeared in this series before and have been surpassed too. Forget about everything past this point: do you remember when Goku defeated Piccolo Daimao? He went to God's lookout and got smacked by Popo. Then what does Popo tell him? That God's probably a thousand times stronger than himself! That's crazy and that's a level of power that Goku surpasses in just a few years of simple training. Of course, after power levels were introduced, we realize that God's power was minuscule and the difference between his power and Goku's at the time probably wasn't much, but before that point, he and Popo were exactly like Beerus and Whis, were they not? Two people that came out of nowhere and were also incredibly strong for no reason but never intervened in anything, at least Beerus and Whis haven't been surpassed yet, but one of the main themes in Dragon Ball is that hard work conquers all.

And then one arc later, Kuririn and the others get over 4x stronger just after 6 months of training with God (and more 6 months of training alone), making Goku's gains in those 3 years, along with God and Popo's power, seem pathetic. Like I said, power levels are flawed, very flawed, they both ruin our perception of power hierarchy before their introduction and make ANY power-up coming after them, even if they're removed from the story, seem ridiculous because they're only going to get bigger and bigger. You can't complain now, it's ridiculous to complain now, you should have been complaining from the beginning, because at this point it doesn't really matter anymore, they'll tell the story they need to tell, they can't afford to make sense anymore. All you can do is embrace it and curse the moment Toriyama thought it was a good idea to implement a system like that in the series.

The music, I thought, was pretty dark in that scene. But yes, they indeed focused more on Tagoma, even so I feel like they did a good job trying to make us feel despair.
And Vegeta just farting out of nowhere is like Freeza taking a poop on Vegeta in Dragonzball PeePee. xD
Wait, wait, wait just a minute here. You like that childish and unfunny catastrophe but call Super... childish and unfunny? It's even labelled as a parody, so you can't use the excuse that you weren't expecting something funny to happen. I don't get you at all.

Why is there an argument going on in this thread? It's a simple question asked of some people, and yet a whole argument has broken loose?
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

What made you give up watching Super? Rehashed story? Bad animation? Will you restart watching it at some point?

For me, it's the totally rehashed story that bugs me the most. Someone tell me when the story gets to truly new stuff. I'll return to the show.

I'm referring to gods of destruction, god ki, and the concept of a realm unreachable by any mortal through training, which is something Goku implied in BoG. I liked this concept as a method to break the SSJ3 cap because, at that point in the series, the scales were really ridiculous. You're talking about the occupation of the gods.

Krillin and co became stronger than Goku during those 6 months (wasn't it a year?), but to be fair, they had already gotten close to his level through their own training before the Piccolo Jr arc. Not to mention, if we go by filler, it's shown they were given unique training routines Goku may have not received. Even then, their increase wasn't that dramatic; it was just enough to surpass the villain they knew killed Goku. My gripe is that the scales really went as over-the-top as they should have after the Buu saga. I liked the concept of a ritual needed to go beyond this level of power, but they ruined that.

I LOVE that childish catastrophe. xD

The case with Super is that it's a sequel series to DBZ. My expectations are different for that than for a parody.

I dropped it, or rather, i dropped anime version of Super:
- Horrible animation, that won't get fixed on home release
- I'm not asking for deep plot, but i would like to see at least some effort, why Ginyu is still alive? (I can barely understand Pilaf, but Ginyu? he was cold blooded killer)
- I hated Chi Chi in DBZ anime, and here, she is as bad as was in DBZ
- I know Gohan is not a fighter, but Toei made him so much of a punchbag, even Freeza mook wipe floor with him, it's not even funny
- In DB/DBZ/DBGT, when you were much stronger than your opponent, surprise attack did nothing, here, it mortally wound

I might return to it when Universe 6 saga come, but for now, i will stick with BoG/F version of this story

Like I've said before I might just stick with the movies as my personal canon of the first two arcs and Super doesn't kick off to me until the U6 arc.

Apparently humiliating Vegeta is now the gag itself, as opposed to actually trying to stretch out his character Especially him being the only one that has to, while Goku can just piggyback off the opportunity after it's open by Vegeta.

I feel the same, the only credit I give Super, are the major plot retcons, for the most part are better than the movie's direction. Though for the most part, it's really not worth home releases.

But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Well I dropped it after the first episode and haven't watched it since then
It's like they really wanted me to not watch it so they did their best to make the first episode as bad as they could so I just finished the first episode and didn't bother ever checking any episode past that

It's just a cash-in anyways
A sequel was not really needed to a franchise that ended 20 years ago(and at the point it ended it's not like there was any room for the story to really continue...hence why we have dumb shit like Blue Super Saiyan now and Freeza turning into a Super Saiyan)

They should have just stuck to making the occasional non-canon movie imo

No, the closest thing would be not watching it on Saturday night livestream, now i wait, 3-4 days for some good subs from the only good fansub group for DBS.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.
