What subs? We're talking about the manga, not the anime. Beers says Goku is the second strongest he ever fought and that he'll invite the first to the tounament. Goku asks if that's not Whis and Beers says he's not because Whis can't enter. So, if Goku is number two and there's a number one that is not Whis, who is stronger than Goku and Beers, it's logical to think Whis is stronger than all of them and isn't being counted because he's not entering the tournament.

I mean when he called goku the second strongest,that was in BOG arc. idk why he just didn't say third.

I wonder if the mysterious fighter actually has to be stronger than Goku. With SSGSS Goku is stronger than he was when he fought Beerus and since then the two haven't fought again. It could certainly be a twist.

After what an embarrassment that the Super anime has been, and based on the fact that the "villains" were revealed to be "Fat Beerus" and "Girl Whis", my expectations for the entire story could not get much lower. The only thing keeping me interested was Toyotaro's art in the manga, which is always great.

BUT NOW, OH MAN.

Over the last 2 chapters, we've been promised:
-a 5 vs 5 crew battle
-the battle will take place in a "neutral universe", meaning we might get a glimpse into a universe that isn't a mirror of our own
-a new character from our universe stronger than Goku
-Piccolo and Buu will be back in action in a hopefully much more substantial way than Battle of Gods and Revival of F
-A Jaco/Bulma side story (nobody really seems to be reacting to this but OMG YES) that could potentially reveal more about the Galactic Patrol
-a new omniscient character that I'm sure will be interesting, and the center of the universe
-a sweet new Egyptian-style battlefield that will likely be a playable map in video games next year
-multiple new Saiyan characters and other "intelligent" beings
-Super Dragon Balls
-some last minute training(?)

Wow. Other than that, the character interactions are fantastic. Jaco is great as always, and I especially loved the bit where Goku decided that changing universes wouldn't be a big deal.

For the first time since the announcement of the series, I can honestly say that I am Super hyped.

Either way, since Whis is his teacher, I don't think that counts as "fighting".

It's an old fan fiction trope where you have a character who's devoid of any flaws and can do anything and everything. A self fulfillment character type. It's a boring type to watch.

I agree Beerus and Whis aren't Gary-stus. They definitely have flaws.

The character type I'm talking about it's more akin to "a perfect character who can get whatever they want from whoever they want, gains powers with no reason or trouble, has something special about them (purple irises, young human but with silver hair that kind of thing). They usually have a tragic back story to make you try to sympathize with them.

Beerus is a petty asshole whose immense power has led him into a life of boredom. We don't know much about Whis, but the fact that he's a servant could apply.

Mary Sues are perfect, morality and all.

I think Beerus and Whis are built up as 2 people able of beating all the rest In the universe and get whatever they want. Sounds pretty darn close to a mary sue,not the exact same but from what I know of it seams really close. Part of why Beerus is so boring to me,at least whis brings some culture with his wisdom.

"Overpowered" and "Gary Stu" are completely different things. In fact, the latter are usually underdogs, not someone of high status like Beerus. A character doesn't even need to be the strongest in a cast to be a Gary Stu, he just needs to be close to perfect in every sense, which is not the case of a spoiled jerk like Beerus. And Whis is too absent-minded to even start.

A good way to detect one is when the rest of the cast keeps admiring (or envying), following and talking about how great he/she is. You know, like the revered entity that Naruto became through his series. In Dragon Ball i guess Goku would be the closest, if he wasn't so damn flawed for a shonen protagonist.

He gave up the girl he was only chasing after to annoy his rival and wound up with the girl he openly respected most throughout the entire series. Not exactly villain material.
