Would be easier to name a planet, Krypton for example, but heck if this comes to fruition Dragon ball would essencially be immortalize in the universe XD
There's room for only one snake, and one big boss.

Not a planet, but...jelleline89 wrote: Two years ago, a similar petition was made to name a planet "Gallifrey", a reference to Doctor Who. The petition had 100k signatures but never got it's goal.

Bit late to the party on this one... but
I love it. Stunned at the number of people that have signed it!
Funny and although it probably won't come to anything, it would be pretty incredible if it did wouldn't it?

My birthday gift to myself is indulging in sheer fanboyism by signing this petition.

My bad, but my point still stands. No one in their right mind will name it "Namek". Remind me to come back here to heckle when a month has past, the petition has died, and Kepler 22-b is still Kepler 22-b.Adamant wrote:Not a planet, but...jelleline89 wrote: Two years ago, a similar petition was made to name a planet "Gallifrey", a reference to Doctor Who. Want further proof this is never happening?
I got an e-mail back from NASA Science when I inquired them about this petition.
"Rest assured [redacted my real name], the chances of this anime reference even being considered are minimal at best. While it is great to see such passion for outer space, change.org petitions aren't the way to handle planet naming. I will certainly pass along your feelings for not wanting this particular name to [redacted] but you probably already share their exact feelings on the matter."
http://science.nasa.gov/contact/ If you want to contact them as well. Sorry to bring everyone back to reality on this one.

I sign this for fun. I don't see any harm out of this since all our planets in our solar system are named after roman gods.

This is getting more attention that I thought. Over 100k signs already.

Btw, "Pluto" was chosen by a 11 year old girl back in 1930, so why can't we have Namek, lol?Hellspawn28 wrote:I sign this for fun. I don't see any harm out of this since all our planets in our solar system are named after roman gods.

I'm actually shocked that this has gotten so many signatures. I wonder how many signatures would be required before there's a chance of this happening.

So just because I don't share the same aspirations as you, I deserve to be banned? Just like the watermark incident, I'm not breaking any rules. I made my opinion clear and added a quip about how in a month's time, I would be laughing about how this failed. If you think that's ban-worthy, I can show you similar comments from the past that would technically also be ban-worthy.VegettoEX wrote:Let me be clear, and make an example for everyone else:jelleline89 wrote:Remind me to come back here to heckle when a month has past, the petition has died, and Kepler 22-b is still Kepler 22-b.

I'm not being rude, I'm being factual. NASA has never gone as far to name a planet or star off of a silly anime reference, and the e-mail I got back proves this. Jacob shared the same views as I and you also got on his case. Why? There's two sides to every coin, why only focus on the one you like? How about you show me reasons why NASA would approve a joke like this so we can actually converse on the subject. Because just saying it's fun doesn't really make your case. NASA could do a lot of stuff "got fun", but it doesn't mean that they would or even should.
And once again guys, I e-mailed NASA Science. They're now aware of the petition and will not be naming the planet Namek. When have they ever changed the name of a planet or star in accordance to an online fan polling site? Never. So why start now?
Re: Petition: Changing the planet name of Kepler 22-b to "Na
What it really takes for getting some planet or asteroid named something "amusing" is having someone on the IAU naming committee be a fan of that show, and normally if it fits their naming pattern. Scientists are people, too and have senses of humor: they have to name so much crap that you can occasionally name things funny names. There is a asteroid that has the official designation of The Little Prince's planet, for example.
But I think Namek is pretty far down the list, sadly. More likely to get Star Trek related names sometime. (even though Vulcan failed recently for one of Pluto's moons, I can see it succeeding for some other object).

Yeah since they did name rocks on Mars after Space Ghost, Zorak, Moltar and Brak

I signed the Gallifrey petition... shame nothing came of it.
We can still name a planet Skaro though.

You are being rude because of the way you express yourself. Doesn't matter if you're "factual" as long as you behave like you do.jelleline89 wrote: I'm not being rude, I'm being factual.

We've already explained to you what the problem was with the watermark incident, as well as the problem here. Additionally, the final section of the rules state that the rules are up to the moderation team's interpretation of them, and that our decisions and actions aren't up for debate. So you've obviously broken that rule too, along with going off-topic.jelleline89 wrote:So just because I don't share the same aspirations as you, I deserve to be banned? This isn't to say that we want to be callous dictators who can't be questioned, but we're not going to change our policies without some widespread community outcry. I'm sorry that you don't agree with our actions, but if you have such a problem with the way we run things, you may want to consider leaving of your own accord and finding a community that better suits you. We honestly do not enjoy issuing account strikes or bans, but given your previous public warning, you have had more than enough chances. If you really do want to stick around, just accept this last free warning and move on.

It's a public agency, so yes they do care about what the general public thinks. If enough people were interested, they might want to take advantage of that interest.jelleline89 wrote:They're now aware of the petition and will not be naming the planet Namek. I signed the petition, because while I feel it's extremely unlikely it would be a nice for us Dragon Ball fans to be recognized like that.
I don't think NASA will listen to the fanboys/girls, maybe if someone could convince JAXA (the Japanese space agency) and they talked NASA into it because after all we know how well respected Dragon Ball is in Japan (even by people who aren't nerds), compared to the rest of the world.

Didn't take long for signatures for this to simmer down, did it? It never even surpassed the amount of signatures the Doctor Who petition had, let alone it's actual goal.
It took a whole week just to amass an addition 2,000 signatures. What that number drop with every week ahead.
Pretty safe to say it's hit the ceiling at this point and won't be rearing it's head again anytime soon. it had a good run, but as stated before, it was an unobtainable goal.
