It's no problem. I'm only being anal about it because I'm so desperate for fans to use fair screenshots when criticising animation. After Super #5, I guess I'm a little touchy on stuff like that. The response to that episode was not fun to deal with, and it lead to subsequent episodes being put under the magnifying glass and judged totally unfairly.Kiwimelon wrote:Well I guess you're right, it is a little unfair...fault on my part entirely. As far movies go, Bojack Unbound by far. I loved that blue shade they gave to Goku's/Gohan's black hair.
Spoiler:
A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

I get what you're saying. But I'm wondering though...was that episode in Super due to the animation budget, or were the fans pleading over the episodes to come quicker? Because I still am confused as to why the animation turned out that way. I mean, it wasn't atrocious so to say bluntly, but rather, rushed...? It seemed not too appealing compared to what i've seen.Ajay wrote:It's no problem. I'm only being anal about it because I'm so desperate for fans to use fair screenshots when criticising animation. Re: Which saga/series/special/movie has your favorite art?
We don't have a very thorough explanation as to what happened, but Ootsuka Ken (one of the animators on #5) described an "animation collapse". To take a guess based on Super's pretty rushed production schedule, I'd say that the animators simply didn't have enough time to draw such a lengthy action episode. Moreover, Naoki Tate, the animation supervisor on the episode, would have been left with no time to correct any poor drawings before the episode released. So what we're left with is a rushed episode with zero touch-ups! Doesn't exactly make for a good looking episode.Kiwimelon wrote:I get what you're saying. Nothing to do with budget or fan pressure. All down to Toei's very rushed schedule.

Interesting stuff from everyone indeed. Art has never really been a huge problem for Dragon Ball (Until now in Super, I suppose. Since the current art style makes it more difficult to not notice when characters are off model, or at least to me. Even then, the characters usually look fine).
What do you guys think about Kai's touch ups? I haven't been on the forums long enough to gauge the general consensus, but do you think Kai looks better than the original Z? I think it generally does, but there are some scenes and sections that I don't like as much in Kai, such as Gohan's SSJ2 transformation or some of the scenes that were obviously redrawn.

Well that's really disappointing. It's sad because it was kind of an interesting episode too. The redraws are pretty much universally hated. Reasons cited are usually to do with how much they stick out due to being too clean, having one-size stroke thickness, and often being rather poorly traced. It didn't help that they were used to haphazardly; there seemed to be no logic behind their placement! Their inclusion during some of the series' biggest moments really pulled people out of the show.Wezenheim wrote:What do you guys think about Kai's touch ups? In terms of the remaster quality of the original footage, it's pretty popular. A lot of people enjoy the colours, the boost in clarity that HD brings, and reasonably well-done grain filtering. The biggest complaint comes from the overall soft picture of the 16mm episodes. Not a lot to really say there. Check out the 35mm episodes on Namek for your pinsharp quality. Simply the nature of the format when the grain is removed.

Yes in my similar opinion, it does. I like the smoother interface, the outlining(most of the time), and the lighter tones (somewhat). However I liked the sketchiness of Z. In Kai, they had some of the sketchier lines and drawings, but they made things too soft and less detailed. An example is right here:Wezenheim wrote:Interesting stuff from everyone indeed. The 'sketchiness' made the series seem more realistic and bold. The softness of Kai doesn't appeal to me too much. Then there is the color. I like lighter colors, but at least don't make them so pale. Add a bit more heat and saturation!
The last thing I want to mention is the color palette and how they all sink in together. Kai was good at this in the majority of the show. However, you want to make the colors blend in together to create the perfect mixture of shadow and light. However...

The outlining on this picture of Tien Shinhan to the right (KAI) the outline and the colors aren't that splendid together in my honest opinion. I mean look it! I bet it would have been a bit better if the outlines weren't so deep personally...Heck! The outlines hide all the shadows of Tien's complexion!
Anyways, despite these odds, I like the art of Kai.

Yeah, I agree with all that. Kai's color scheme as a whole is nicer, but the softness took away from some of the impacts of the punches and kicks.Kiwimelon wrote:Yes in my similar opinion, it does. Those are both redrawn shots, though. Not the fairest indicator of Kai's general look in the remastered footage.

Broly: Second Coming, Fusion Reborn and most episodes of Cell & Buu Saga has some of da best animation/art.
I dony know how to post pics, but Ep 276 of DBZ alone rivals any of the best drawn episodes in Anime. Freaking gorgeous

Well that is what we're indicating right? Re-drawn or altered it's still Kai.Cipher wrote:Those are both redrawn shots, though. Not the fairest indicator of Kai's general look in the remastered footage.

The gritty look of the Saiyan arc. It added an epic feel to it. Of course, that wasn't the first nor the only time they used it, but it looked especially lovely during that part of the anime.

End of Dragon Ball - Beginning of Dragon Ball Z , including the movies that came out during that period. Loved the style, atmosphere and animation in Movies 1 and 2.
I also really liked the first Brolly movie and the Bojack movie , even though the style had changed greatly by then.

For me, the 23rd Tournament through to Raditz, plus the Dead Zone movie, had the best penmanship. If I could extend that it might be Piccolo Daimao through to Ginyu.
However I will concede to a point made earlier in the thread, that GT and Path to Power had the best colour palette.

Re: Which saga/series/special/movie has your favorite art?
Aw man, I nearly forgot about this thread! How times have changed. I know I said I liked Yamamuro's new designs originally, but I've grown pretty tired of them recently. I still like his stuff, but I don't feel the same way anymore. I still love how Yo! Son Goku looks though.
I honestly can't pick a favorite these days! Z Movies 1 and 12 are absolutely wonderful and I also really enjoy how Path to Power looks. The Boo arc is probably still my favorite arc aesthetically, although late Dragon Ball/early Z is also extremely charming the more I watch it.

Difinetly the saiyan saga art style , its detailed and gritty , and I'm not a big fan of the angular style that is used in the later arcs
, i also like the circle eyes much more than the square (sharp) eyes
