Could it be that, like SSJ Grades are shortcuts to greater power, while FPSSJ accomplished that without wasting energy, SSJ2 and SSJ3 are shortcuts to greater strength and agility, while "Ultimate/Mystic" accomplished that without wasting it as well?

Old kaioshin basically said that in the manga. According to him, that kind of transformations are just for show. His upgrade allows the fighter to tap into all the power the transformations gave him and more, without any of the stress that the transformations caused as a side effect.

That is why, even if Gohan can still transform into Ssj in the Buu saga, it would be basically pointless. Using the upgrade that the old kaioshin gave him is simply better.

As for why Gohan turns Ssj in GT and Super, it's simply never explained. Maybe the upgrade wore off in time.

If that is true then it is a real shame. "Mystic" Gohan is the only time I ever enjoyed that character.

There is no in-universe reason for the loss of mystic, it's just a lazy retcon to make Gohan weaker than Vegeta and Goku.

There is no indication of Gohan lossing Mystic power up, also him hypothetically not having said power up is not a retcon, cause it is not changing any previously stablished plot element.

What are you talking about? The Mystic form is a previously established plot element, It's the reason Gohan was able to fight with Super Buu, something that wasn't possible in his SSJ or SS2 forms.

The fact that he can now only transform into a Super Saiyan is proof enough that they've retconned the power up. It was stated in the story that the Mystic form made his Super Saiyan transformations redundant as it unlocked all of his hidden power, and then some. If they'd taken the form away and had one of the Kais explain it's absence then it wouldn't be a retcon but as it stands they haven't explained anything, they just took it away and hoped we wouldn't notice.

Gohan is quite special but the instant power boost he got. He went from around Cells level to above Super Buu including a fused Super Saiyajin 3.

So I think the way mystic works though this is my headcanon and what I have seen from the DBS anime. So Gohan said because he hasn't been training, he can't bring his full power. So in a way of explaining, he can't harness his powers and because his power has been dipping, he can't train with his full potential because he can't harness his power or rather, his potential/mystic powers/ latent powers are so far away, there is a big gap in his base ki/power he can't summon his mystic powers.

I don't know if I am making sense or if I am repeating myself lol.
