Is this a mistake or somthing else?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Is this a mistake or somthing else?

Post by Bardock the Mexican » Sun Jan 14, 2007 8:25 pm

The title doesn't say much but I have noticed a mistake or a language gaffe in one of the names of the Spanish episodes on Funi's discs. In the first Episode called "Mini Goku is Mr. Charming! Hi, my name is Gohan."they literaly translated "my name is" as "mi nombre es" instead of "me llamo es" which is THE normal way to introduce ones's self. I have never heard it put like this. So I ask the jury, is this a mistake or somthing worse?*

*They used Babelfish and took the result of the Japanese->English and put it in in Spanish. Let's hope it's not what I said.

If you Google "mi nombre es" (with quotes) you get 1,310,000 results, so it can't be that uncommon. By comparison, "me llamo" gets 1,580,000 results; not a huge difference.

I barely know any Spanish so don't take this as authoritative.

I notice now that you are (presumably) a native Spanish speaker. In which case, what more is there to say than your original post? ^^;

Nombre and llamo both literally mean name, so what's the big deal?

Actually, I learned in my Spanish class that "me llamo..." technically means "I call myself..."

It does. "Me llamo" literally means "I call myself". If you add an "es" then you're saying "I call myself is."

My mistake on all of that. I wasn't thinking when I posted this and only noticed my mistake when I saw it just recently. Don't worry, it's just a mistake and not somthing that happens a lot. :wink: I only rarely make a gaffe like this.

It's okay, we all make mistakes. Anyway, you can say either "Me llamo" or "Mi nombre es." You'll get the same point across so it doesn't matter which you use really.

No, it's a verb. Specifically the reflexive verb "llamarse", which conjugates to "me llamo" (literally "I call myself").

Really? Well, I did fail Spanish, so forgive my ignorance. I thought I could correct ChaotixXero's improper-sounding translation with logic <_<

Conjugation of the reflexive verb "llamarse":
Yo me llamo, tú te llamas, él se llama, nosotros nos llamamos, vosotros os llamáis, ellos se llaman.
call myself= llamarse
It's the same that:
Mi nombre es..., tu nombre es..., su nombre es..., nuestros nombres son..., vuestros nombres son..., sus nombres son...,
nombre=name

XD
