Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
Why do we keep talking about Bojack? I'm more curious as to what their opinion on Yo! Son Goku and his Friends Return! Back before I saw BoG, it was my absolute favourite special. Mostly because it somehow managed to give nearly every character something relevant to do. In only 30 minutes. I mean, when was the last time we've ever seen Yajirobe do something?
I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
1. He wasn't directly in front of him. He was off to the side, hiding behind a rock. You're making it seem like he was holding hands with Freeza. He wasn't someone that Goku, or anyone on the team, saw as any kind of threat. Do you think Vegeta is an idiot and a hypocrite for letting his tail get cut by Yajirobe? Goku letting his guard down is one of the main themes of the movie, so I'm not sure why you would like me to respond to it.Doctor. wrote:1. Sorbet was IN FRONT OF HIM. Seriously, he was. This is absolutely inexcusable. The LEAST they could have done was have Sorbet right behind him. And, again, Goku is a hypocrite, you still haven't addressed this.
2. They ate the beans after the soldiers were defeated, meaning that they had no reason to eat them at all. They didn't run out because Jaco didn't eat his. What if he did? What if, in their huge misuse of the beans, they used all of them while fighting the soldiers? Goku would have died had Jaco not eaten his (also, why DIDN'T he eat it? He's weaker than Piccolo and Gohan and both of them needed a senzu). They shouldn't have eaten them besides that time where Gohan was punched by Freeza, period.
3. Why does it matter if it's a different kind of Ki? It's just a power-up, that's it. It's something Gohan can acquire in a day, honestly, the power vanishes in 10 minutes, if he doesn't absorb it? Well, gather up the circle and try again. I'm sure everyone would be willing to do that a few times, there's honestly no excuse for this besides lazy writing. They made an exploitable power-up and now they don't want it to be exploited. Well, we would have known if Vegeta put any effort into it if that terrible film had put any effort into filling in the gap between the two films, but of course not.
5. But that still doesn't deny the fact that the film made Freeza look like an idiot the entire time. Even at the end, because Whis' time travel power was used immediately (and what a predictable climax it was, everyone called it out before the film even aired). Would you prefer the film we got, where Freeza learned nothing and got pummeled and lectured by both of Vegeta and Goku (who learn NOTHING by the end of the film, by the way, since they agree never to fight together), or a film where Freeza comes after mastering a new form and Vegeta and Goku need to team up to defeat him? Not only would there be some TENSION in the latter (because God forbid the actual film has any of that), but the 3 characters would actually develop in some way.
6. Fair enough.
2. It didn't end up negatively affecting them, so I'm not sure why you feel this is a significant flaw with the film. Toriyama did not want them to run out of senzu beans, so they didn't. He could have just as easily have written it so that Jaco ate one and they still had one or two left over.
3. I just don't agree with your mindset towards Super Saiyan God at all, so I have nothing more to say about it.
5. You think Freeza looked like an idiot the whole time? Up until the very end he was confident and in command. He was killing henchmen left and right, killed Gohan in one hit, seemed to be overpowering Goku for a while, and ended up with a would-be victory. As for Goku and Vegeta teaming up, I believe that will happen at some point in the near future, but it wasn't necessary for Freeza. His resurrection was intentionally of little consequence in the grand scheme of things...and I'm okay with that. I think it's too soon to say whether the characters have developed or not. This was the wake-up call that Goku needed for an issue that he's had for longer than the events of this movie, so we'll just have to see if he acts differently in the stories to come.

Looking for patterns where none exist: Slug has Lani's backing, Mystical Adventure has Kaiser's, is there anything in the better half that got Taka's weight behind it?

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
Except he still had no reason to get involved. He's not an expert interrogator (and, in fact, fails at his task), and has no reason to believe that Ginyu would be any less effective at the task than him. He got involved because he thought it'd be fun.KaiserNeko wrote:After this? I'm done with this conversation. There's a ton of repeating of points going on and frankly, I'm tired of spinning my wheels here.
I literally just said: After everyone continuously dropping the ball, he needed to finally get the answer himself. Even he got tired of it all. He needed answers and, at that point, could not risk anyone else flubbing it up. I gave you a very specific reason why, after letting EVERYONE ELSE continuously muck up his plans (including Dodoria, Zarbon, and the ENTIRE GINYU FORCE) that he decides to take action on his own.
He's clearly not portrayed as indolent in that moment, or at least no more indolent than Vegeta.
So, there aren't any actual similarities besides the premise. I'm sorry, but there's a lot more to a rip-off than just the premise. Like, say, a character having near-identical powers, goals, personality, occupation, and methods to another character, with several scenes involving said character being outright lifted from an earlier work...It is a rip-off when it's within that frame of time, in the exact same universe, with two related characters. I'm sorry if that's not enough to make it seem like a rip-off to you, but it does to me.
Who is this Freeza of which you speak? Why would Vegeta kill for anyone? He's clearly established as the strongest being in the universe who just does whatever the heck he wants whenever he wants. Is it not implied at all that Vegeta actually fights and kills for Freeza?
That's... not really him being a warrior. Not anymore than Freeza killing off the saiyans is him being a warrior. Being a battle-hardened warrior implies he fights actual battles, rather than just stepping on bugs (literally, in this case). Heck, he even outsources most of the stepping on bugs to his henchmen. Hence, why in the only fight of the arc where he participates, he only chooses to get involved after all his henchmen are dead (rather than earlier, where it would've been more practical- and entertaining). Again, you're not actually listing any differences between their characters, you're describing them acting the same way but then arbitrarily assigning them different personalities because it "feels" right. Both villains are clearly portrayed as mostly lazy and hands-off, but very rarely are willing to get involved. If Vegeta actually did more personal killing than Freeza, that'd be purely because he only has two (or eight, depending on how you count it) henchmen rather than a few dozen. Not because their personalities are any different. That he actually gets involved in battle? That he is a battle hardened warrior? I believe it is, and that that is reflected in his personality: A more down to Earth, yet still evil and vicious killer who does enjoy watching his opponents be destroyed.I take this from the scene on that bug planet where he was celebrating after the battle. If you don't get that impression, fine. That's the impression I get.
Both only torture when someone's pissed them off (e.g. Goku), otherwise their target is typically too far below their notice to bother with torture (e.g. Cargo).I believe it's heavily implied that Freeza very rarely involves himself in combat, and his sadistic streak is much stronger and more vile than Vegeta's. Vegeta seems less likely to torture for the hell of it, while Freeza seems like the kind of guy who would default to it.

Herms wrote:The fact that the ridiculous power inflation is presented so earnestly makes me just roll my eyes and snicker. Like with Freeza, where he starts off over 10 times stronger than all his henchmen except Ginyu (because...well, just because), then we find out he can transform and get even more powerful, and then he reveals he can transform two more times, before finally coming out with the fact that he hasn't even been using anywhere near 50% of his power. Oh, and he can survive in the vacuum of space. All this stuff is just presented as the way Freeza is, without even an attempt at rationalizing it, yet the tone dictates we're supposed to take all this silly grasping at straws as thrilling danger. So I guess I don't really take the power inflation in the Boo arc seriously, but I don't take the power inflation in earlier arcs seriously either, so there's no net loss of seriousness. I think a silly story presented as serious is harder to accept than a silly story presented as silly.

Re: DragonBall Z Abridged
This debate is weird given that a recurring theme in Toriyama's writing is that even the strongest person can be defeated by a weak attack if they're taken off-guard or get careless.
Yajirobe vs Vegeta, slashed in the back not just once but twice. Also, it was clear Krillin could have killed him by the end.
Majin Vegeta vs SS2 Goku, back of the head KO.
Gotenks vs Super Buu, fooled around too much and didn't finish the job so Buu survived.
Buu vs Everyone he absorbs who doesn't notice the evil goo behind them. Worst example is Gohan, who is specifically more powerful than Buucolo but is still absorbed by him.
Perfect Cell vs SS2 Gohan: Evenly matched until Vegeta's weak attack distracts him enough to get him killed.
And then the forgotten fight all the way back at the start: the first Yamcha and Goku fight. Goku is distracted by hunger and Yamcha actually manages to beat him despite Goku obviously being stronger.
You could even say Freeza was beaten by a somewhat weak attack; he knew the blades were out there and wasn't scared of them, but Goku's elbow distraction made him forget and, well, paid the price.
Even if you personally disagree with some of these, the point remains that there's several examples of people being beaten by their own carelessness.

I saw it the other day. In my opinion the plot falls apart at the end, but for what its worth, Path to Power is beautiful, and considering that the complaint of Sleeping Princess was that of all the OG dragonball films it captured the feeling of the series the least, Path to Power likely captured it the best. Well we'll find out soon enough, but my money are those two reasons it being in the top 10.Kuririn Fan wrote:Path to Power best DB movie? Cmooooooooooon... Also, Curse of the Blood Rubies... better than Path to Power? As far as recaps of the original arc go, at least Path to Power has BEAUTIFUL animation, homages to the original manga color scheme, and tries to do something grandiose in comparison.
Ultimately, though, I don't think it should have been in the top 10... but this was a group list. And you know how that can end up.

Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return feels like a shorter, simpler version of BoG. With more fanservice.
Anyway, I guess I understand why it's where it is.

Probably because Toriyama wielded his full strength on both flicks. He took that feeling from Yo Son Goku and multiplied it by ten for BoG.MozillaVulpix wrote:Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return feels like a shorter, simpler version of BoG. With more fanservice.

I've got a bad feeling about where Resurrection F is gonna end up on here....
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Actually I've had a question for a long time that I never got around to asking.
Is your Bulma the same person from when you guys started, or did she get replaced? Because there is a massive increase in quality between the early episodes and current ones.

I feel like I have a pretty good guess at what #1 is gonna be, and if I'm right, then probably couldn't agree more.
Out of curiosity, how are you guys deciding this via a group? For example, whatever ends up at the #1 spot, was it one that you all three felt was the best film? Or is it something where just at least one of you was that passionate about it, and the rest agreed that it did have it's merits even if it's not your own personal favorite?

Small question, will Bojack character act be changed, now that Vegeta3986 left? So far, when character voice was replaced, how he act was different too
- Kami - He was senile old geezer, and later become more snarky and sarcastic
- Cooler - Earlier he was just a prick, then he developed more of his own character, sometimes upset when people say "Freeza did it"
