So anyway, I thought we'd discuss the nature of Kinto'un. There's two main aspects to him/it that I'm curious about.

Those of you who have read my fanfiction so far will remeber that I portrayed Mai and Shu (But not Pilaf) as being capable of riding him/it. This resulted in my receiving several FF.net comments (but none from you guyhs, surprisingly) "informing" me that the "villains" shouldn't be able to ride Kinto'un. Now, the reason I gave was that it was inherited genetics-whoops, I mean, I chalked it up to the idea that Shu and Mai (and to a certain extent, Pilaf) were always more just mischeif-makers than "evil" in any real way, as comic relief antagonists tend to be. Regardless, the situation left me wondering as to an aspect or two of Kinto'un's...

Aw, crap, that sounded way too serious and sensible for me. Hold on...

That's better. Anyhoo...

1) Kinto'un as a character. I believe it's been suggested a few times in the manga that Kinto'un is actually some sort of intelligent, living creature. (The only instance I can specifically remember is from Volume 37 (21), when Gohan transforms to G. Saiyaman to fly himself, and leaves Kinto'un. He blasts off, and Kinto'un has one of those little "spark-in front-of-your-head" things that indicate surprise or shock.) Are there many signs that point to Kinto'un as intelligent, sentient character?

2) Kinto'un's criteria. As we know, Kinto'un won't let just anyone ride him. ( O_o ) Supposedly, you have to be "pure of heart," and Kinto'un's standards in that regard seem to be pretty strict, seeing as how he/it wouldn't even let Bulma ride him/it (Oh, my). In fact, I don't believe I've ever seen anyone outside the Son family be able to mount Kinto'un. Are there any other instances or ideas as to how Kinto'un operates in this regard? Also, if he/it is indeed a sentient being, is it possible that he/it could have some sort of control over who he/it does or doesn't allow to ride?

In Toriyama's redone ending to the manga (via the Kanzenban editions), Oob is able to ride Kinto'un.

So were the mermaid, Lunchi, Arale and co. (are they human? do they count?) and Upa.
(there's also Chi-chi, but I guess you could consider she's part of the Son family... in the end...)

I guess Muten Roshi could fly on it at some time because Unigame wouldn't have been so surprised that he couldn't fly on it when he gave it to Goku.

Hmmm... interesting. Not only is it evidence towards Kinto'un being intelligent, but also towards him being capable of choosing who rides. Because honestly, I doubt the lady is "pure of heart," but if I were Kinto'un, I wouldn't try refusing to carry her...

Actually I always had some kinda of crazy theroy about our friend Nimbus...

Ok, Roshi's sister Baba can go from this world to the spirit world pretty easily right? Well, whats in the spirit world? Thos ghostly cloud thingys that kinda have personalitys but kinda are just clouds. To be blunt I always just thought Nimbus was the soul of some dead guy.

To try and contribute in this thread, see kinto'un as an old car that belongs to Goku and his family.

The 'old man had it since he was Gohan's age, then Gohan that he was too cool for it, then Goten went out and junked it for cash.. Um.. seeing how I obviously didn't add much to this topic, I'll go on and quote this:

If that theory's true, Goku in his hunger after blowing up Kaio-sama's planet, tried to eat a dead guy.

I always considered Kintoun to be a sentient being, just because of it's emotional expression, though that soul theory is also intriguing. I always wondered why Gohan never bothered with Kintoun until he was in his late teens, spoiled brat.

I think ol' Akira Toriyama forgot about Kintoun from after the Saiyan saga till the begining of Gohan in High School. You dont really see it much during those times.

On the other hand maybe Gohan just wanted to impress the ladies...

Sounds more like GT Goten. Actually if Gohan did think like that I don't think he could have been able to ride it.

It probably couldnt fly to Namek..

And Goku learned shunkanido so he didn't need it anymore. There was no point in using it during the Android saga since they were either training or fighting.

What does Kintoun do when he isn't in action? He must have been pretty damn bored during the Namek and android saga. Maybe he just hung out with Icarus the haiya dragon and that Sabretooth that tried to eat Gohan.
