Strange coincidence between Z and GT

Post by Tian » Wed Dec 30, 2015 2:10 am

While I was watching GT as a child I noticed a strange coincidence between DBZ & DBGT :
Z and GT had the same type of villains : an alien lifeform who has a hatred towards the saiyans and uses a big ball attack (Freeza/Baby), an android who needs another android to become powerful (Cell/Super 17) and finally a monster made of pure evil who is killed by a spirit bomb (Buu/Omega Shenron)
A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years :)

Its obviously due to the fact that TOEI couldn't come up with new or fresh ideas, that they just re-used old stuff from DBZ.

They did the same with most of the 13 DBZ movies, where its villains were just slight variations of the same characters in the series.

At least Z Movies had different settings (OtherWorld in Fusion Reborn, Tenkaichi Budoukai in Bojack Unbound & Science Lab in Bio-Broly)

Not to mentioned slightly altered villain personalities (Janemba, Broly & Hiru are mindlss beasts as Buu), while guys like Cooler & Tullece are Frieza/Vegeta wannabe

GT villains are 2.0 Downgraded Version of Frieza, Cell & Buu

I am glad that a moody cat (which is a rewritten version of a pretty original idea of Toei's version of this villain), a Golden Boy Freeza, a blue and red Super Saiyajin and Saiyajin, Freeza race character, et cetera are all so original.

I think at least Baby should be considered an interesting idea.

Beerus is pretty original since he was not a rehash of any other character out there. He is the most original villain we had in a while in my opinion. His backstory is original and he has a great personality which something that most Toei villains lack. If Toriyama didn't write BOG then Beerus would have been another generic doomsday villain like Bojack or Yi Xing Long. They would probably have him transform into some Godzilla type of monster to fit his lizard design (Which I'm glad that Beerus does not transform since you don't need a gimmick to prove that you are powerful).

I do agree that Blue SSj and Golden Freeza are not very original. Bebi was more of a rehash of Dr. Raichi expect for Bebi had some level of personality to him while Dr. Raichi was a generic end game boss. Toei is know for rehashing a lot of older things since I do feel like that they are not good at coming out of their own ideas. Most of the 13 movie villains are poor copys of other villains or too similar of older villains:

Garlic Jr - Piccolo
Turles - Radditz
Lord Slug - Piccolo Daimao
Coola - Freeza
Metal Coola - Cyborg Freeza
Super #13 - Cell (Funny how Cell in Raging Blast 2 even comments that Super #13 is similar to his Perfect Form)
Broil - While not a total rehash, but he is another evil surviving Saiyan expect for that he can go SSj.
Bio Broli - Bio warriors from DBZ Movie 2
Janemba - Fat Buu and Super Buu
Hirudegarn - Babidi and Buu

But I think that is the entire point of Dragon Ball GT, be a rehash of everything we saw. That is why Goku became kid and etc, to deliver the "feeling" of the classic/original Dragon Ball. It does not surprise me since Dragon Ball GT did what its purpose dictated to it.

And it looks like Dragon Ball Super/Universe Tournament saga is doing the same, as apparently all the opponents from Universe 6 "match" the Dragon Ball Z sagas.

The U6 fighters look pretty original expect for the Blue Freeza so far. The purple guy looks nothing like Cell expect for having a similar looking face. More people seem to compare him to Mira then Cell. I don't get why people compare the Bear to Buu when they look like they have nothing in common so far other then they are fat.

Toei are pretty creatively bankrupt when it comes to villains without Toriyama's input. The designs, personalities and motives of all the villains in GT and the Z movies, excluding Battle Of Gods, prove this.

I see Bebi as a parasite and not as a rehash of Freeza/Cell. The concept of Tsufurujin didn't exist in the DB Anime nor the manga but rather comes from a Video Game, so technically it's not rehashing thing. Super 17 is indeed a character of Z, but to be honest I would just scratch the 17 Saga from GT. The Shadow Dragons and the misuse of the DBs was brought in DBZ but it was implemented and expanded on GT, So not really a rehash.

The Shadow Dragon arc is pretty original. Super 17 saga took the whole villains coming back from Hell from Fusion Reborn and made the same mistake that Fusion Reborn did by having old villain return as small cameos. I love the bit between Nappa and Vegeta. I would have love more character interactions between the Z-warriors and the past villains in GT. It still felt lazy that they reuse the same idea again and didn't really use anything new with it.

Its kind of ironic the most unique movie villain was Dr. Wheelo from Movie 2. He honestly felt like a villain that would have worked better in the original Dragonball rather than DBZ. Its hard to believe he gave a Goku that trained under King Kai trouble...is his giant robot really as strong as Saiyan Saga Vegeta?

Would have made more sense for Movie 2 to be set before DBZ started like the Garlic Jr. Movie.

What? The Tsufurujin, also known as Tuffles by many are a creation of Akira Toriyama and are mentioned by him in interviews as well as the anime.

To be honest, aside from the Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans, I don't recall them ever appearing or mentioned at all in DBZ Anime.

There was a filler episode when King Kai talk about the history of Planet Vegeta. King Kai said that Tuffles and Saiyans live on the same Planet as each other.

^Nope not a rehash just an expansion on the concept of the Tsufurujins that largely faded away (in Z) after the filler episode. Baby is nothing like Freeza as his revenge is based in reality not fear of what might so he's more akin to Dr. Raichi though what surviving Tsufurujin wouldn't have a grudge?

Which is why I enjoy Baby's saga because it dabbles in the Saiyans past beyond Freeza's rule but through offspring who weren't there. So we get this gray area of who actually did what type of reality of war and I find that interesting. I'd rather the series delve into the past conflict more but [insert blasé jab at recent material here].

The idea of Super 17 is not very new neither. They already did the idea of a Super Android/Cyborg with #13 a few years earlier.

Super 17 was one of the worst ideas of GT. I hate the fact that they somehow made a robot version of 17 in Hell, and him fusing with the good 17 somehow made them as powerful as a Super Saiyan 4? Like...what?

I also hate the fact that they never wish the "good" 17 back to life, so he actually dies for good. Its weird.

Okay, I've been harbouring this opinion for a long time now and reading this thread, I have to comment here.

He's a character who's always either hungry, sleeping or pissed off. He makes gods tremble in fear. Who am I talking about here? Beerus or Buu?
Beerus is not an original villain, he's just a rehashed Majin Buu.

You know who should have been the God of Destruction? Whis. He's an actual original character, he's super fun and has a great personality. Beerus shouldn't even have existed as far as I'm concerned. What a boring, annoying, childish character.

This has been the problem with Super and will continue to be. There is no threat. None at all. Beerus is not threatening, he's just an asshole. Freeza coming back wasn't threatening at all, things only went wrong because Goku and Vegeta were too busy toying with Freeza. And the tournament has no threat from the beginning since as Goku puts it, the worse that can happen is that they get transferred from one universe to the other and nobody cares.

We'll see how it goes. This entire 'Gods' arc has at least half as much material to go I think so there's time, but there's definitely no real monumental threat so far in sight which absolutely was the staple of the show and one of the significant reasons why people love the 3 core Z sagas so much.
