Actually, it was a pure FUNi Studio dub, with just a few ADV VAs sprnkled about, as well as a one-episode stint for Johnny Bosch. The only Ocean studio VA in the dub was Scott Mcneil, whom voiced Hohenheim. Shows just how good FUNi can be.Kendamu wrote:If I remember correctly, for FMA they got Ocean Group to do the voices. With FUNi having "more money that we know what to do with" I wonder why they couldn't keep Ocean Group for DBZ...

Can someone post a youtube link to a clip of the Ocean version of this scene? The last time I saw that episode, DBZ was still in syndicationtheoriginalbilis wrote:You guys should also hear the "You won't escape MY WRAAATH!" line for the redub: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdu8_rko0kU ...

My biggest gripe with that dub is that the line "big bully" is used in almost every episode. Same thing the the typical cheerful, happy forest music that usually plays...GI_Judd2287 wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4QSb02uwOAE
The BGM in the redub is quite awful in comparison.

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Still, you got to admit Shuki Levy's music was at least more memorable than Mark Menza's random-ass guitar noodling.Mr.Piccolo wrote:My biggest gripe with that dub is that the line "big bully" is used in almost every episode. I didn't like Mark Menza's music, but this Shuki Levy guy's music was just generic sci-fi movie BGM. I'd prefer Mark Menza over that any day.theoriginalbilis wrote:Still, you got to admit Shuki Levy's music was at least more memorable than Mark Menza's random-ass guitar noodling.Mr.Piccolo wrote:My biggest gripe with that dub is that the line "big bully" is used in almost every episode. If you meant me, I'm on the "I want to kick FUNimation in the corporal balls because of the widescreen release" side.Mr.Piccolo wrote:Which side are you on?!SatoSky wrote:My thoughts exactly.nathantheguitarist wrote:Who cares for dub music when we get the Japanese BGM with these new setsj/k.

Well, since I've seen the whole series in Japanese fairly recently and listened to some of the UUE redub (on TV and DVD), I was going to listen to the ENG dub/JPN music track first.Mr.Piccolo wrote: Question for those planning on buying the new set: Are you going straight to the JPN audio/ENG dub track? I am to not only watch the show but to see how it works. It seems like a good idea but it could be a bit awkward with the dub and all.
I'm hoping for fully translated credits for the Japanese production on these new sets, not just the FUNi staff and like 5-6 blurbs for the Japanese staff. Maybe even a dubbed version of HEAD CHA-LA would be nice (probably not going to happen, but a guy can dream...)

Well, either way, the voices in FMA sound more... real than the ones in DBZ. In DBZ a lot of the main characters sound like part of their training was chain smoking.Conan the SSJ wrote:Actually, it was a pure FUNi Studio dub, with just a few ADV VAs sprnkled about, as well as a one-episode stint for Johnny Bosch. Let's not forget Mike Sinterniklaas (Dean Venture, Leonardo the TMNT) was in there too ;D
I think the only reason people would find Shuki Levy's music any more or less "memorable" than any of the other composers they eventually got on board, is because you were hearing the SAME tunes in Power Rangers, the 90's Megaman cartoon, and such. Similiar to how PPG and Dexter would use similiar BGM all the time.

I didn't watch many Saban shows. I just think I liked Shuky Levi's better than anyone else's.Kirbopher wrote:Let's not forget Mike Sinterniklaas (Dean Venture, Leonardo the TMNT) was in there too ;D

Well I'm a fan of the original, but I'm actually really interested to hear the dub with the Japanese BGM.Mr.Piccolo wrote:Which side are you on?!j/k. I plan on watching the set in every way, shape, and form... Obviously, keeping in mind that it's going to lose some picture from the top and bottom.

I just came to a somewhat new conclusion on these DVDs.
I prefer the manga over the anime. It's the Japanese soundtrack that keeps me coming back to the anime more than anything. I just compared the episode with when Goku first went Super Saiyan (in 4:3, of course) with the manga chapter counterpart and I've noticed that the anime didn't express exactly what was intended by the manga when it comes to what's in view on the screen.
Of course, I know it's impossible to do that since the manga panels come in all shapes and sizes and a TV screen is always going to be in one of two shapes (4:3 or 16:9). But, I've come to the conclusion that if the new set (which I pre-ordered, BTW) conveys the source material, the manga, well enough in a 16:9 format then I'll be happy with these sets.
Just another viewpoint that I hadn't seen from anyone else yet.
