The Portuguese dub there had him say 'ignoble monster, go to hell'. It's hilarious in how non-Goku that is.Fionordequester wrote:Goku: Horrible monster! You should never have been BOORN!!
That dub...it just captures Goku's pure and merciful nature so perfectly  !

I feel that it should be known that, when Funimation was originally dubbing Dragon Ball Z, they weren't getting their episodes directly from Japan. They were getting the Spanish dub. Yeah that's right, Funimation's dub was a translation of a translation.

This is pretty widely known around these parts, and I imagine people would argue does not excuse certain types of humor and characterization.DanielSSJ wrote:I feel that it should be known that, when Funimation was originally dubbing Dragon Ball Z, they weren't getting their episodes directly from Japan. I dont buy that excuse either. They supposedly used the Latin American dub which was really accurate and well acted, I doubt they would have the results they did if they had followed it.

I didn't know this either, if this is true, then it makes whatever FUNI did with the dubbing of the franchise even less justified. They basically got a loyal translation of the show and said "No, we're not doing it."Lord Beerus wrote:I never knew that. That's unbelievable. Yeah, in retrospect this make the half-assed original FUNi dub of Dragon Ball even much more worse. They basically pulled a 4Kids.successoroffate wrote:I didn't know this either, if this is true, then it makes whatever FUNI did with the dubbing of the franchise even less justified. Ah, so that's why some characters say, "Adios" and "Amigo" in the FUNI dub.

Latin American dub FTW
!!
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.
Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
So does the Spanish dub have, "Mondo Cool" in it?
Re: Most memorable BS dub lines / names
As a musician this one made me laugh. In music, a mordant (or mordent) is a type of ornamental flourish where one plays a note, then an adjacent one before quickly returning to the original note.Lord Exor wrote:The mordant repartee is fairly unique to Freeza in the dub, with other "silly lines" being deemed as such for disparate reasons.
On the subject of dub lines, 'Sad for you!' or any similar where the process of foreign language dubbing has forced an actor to stretch out a syllable to match the lip flaps is gold. Doubly so with Dragon Ball, given the hammy nature of most of the English-language dubs.

I'm still puzzled how people prefer Toonami Ball Z over Funimation's Dragonball Kai dub claiming it sucks and isn't 'good'. Either they're nitpicking things by trying to whitewash their childhood to only remember the good moments of the DBZ dub or just have horrible tastes.

To be fair all the old narrator lines were removed when Kyle Hebert redubbed them.

No, that still doesn't negate the fact that they weren't receiving very good translations. Remember, "accuracy" is only one piece of the puzzle. "Readability" is also another important piece of it, and if the lines they were getting were anything like what BlackPaladin has in his sig...successoroffate wrote:I didn't know this either, if this is true, then it makes whatever FUNI did with the dubbing of the franchise even less justified. "To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."
Then it wouldn't have made a darn bit of difference how "accurate" the dialogue was. Heck, just look at the Big Green dub for what that's like. That one was also a translation of a translation, and well...look how that turned out.

If I do my job wrong or not up to standards, it doesn't matter if I sit there and go, "But I didn't get everything I needed!"
It was my job to FIGURE OUT what I needed, GET what I needed, and DO IT.
That's our take on it as consumers. I didn't and don't give a rat's ass what their scripts looked like. Not my problem.

Oh I'm not arguing that. I'm just saying that getting an accurate translation isn't all there is to getting a quality script.VegettoEX wrote:If I do my job wrong or not up to standards, it doesn't matter if I sit there and go, "But I didn't get everything I needed!"

So, you're saying they should have done a better job with the dub?VegettoEX wrote:If I do my job wrong or not up to standards, it doesn't matter if I sit there and go, "But I didn't get everything I needed!"

IIRC, they got the Mexican dub footage, but they weren't using the Spanish scripts to translate, but Toei's.successoroffate wrote:Say, Are you implying the spanish translation wasn't "good" ?No, that still doesn't negate the fact that they weren't receiving very good translations. Then again, I wonder why they didn't hire a Spanish-to-English translator. It'd have made the job a lot easier than trying to figure out what Toei's scripts actually meant.

No, I'm saying that FUNi's translation of the spanish translation may not have been good. Unless everyone at FUNi was perfectly fluent in Spanish, that could have easily been a factor.successoroffate wrote:Say, Are you implying the spanish translation wasn't "good" ?
