Why is it that when talk of a Dragonball movie comes up one of the first posts is always about hair styles? Are we that obsessed with Goku's hair?

I for one am looking forwrad to seeing a Dragonball movie. To me is like pre-GT fandom. After folks knew that that the Buu Saga was the end but before any word of GT came out, you know folks were hoping for more Dragonball. But once GT was spawned, everyone quieted down and stop asking for more.

If a movie is made and it is good, we'll all be happy and begging for more.
If it's not so good, then atleast it will stop threads like this from popping up as much.

I'm sorry, but Dragon Ball was never meant to be done in live action. So much of it's greatness comes from the whimsical art style of Akira Toriyama (which is why hair is important, since it's integral to the look of the characters we know and love), and this art style will surely be lost in translation. If they indeed choose to do a DBZ movie, it needs to be animated, and I'm worried that if Hollywood does it without any assisstance from Japan, they're just going to make a mockery out of my favorite anime/manga.

I understand what your saying. I would be fine if the characters just had normal modern everyday hair, except Super Saiyan, that should still be close to the original concept. (Hair standing on end, glowing gold, etc.)

If they had normal modern everyday hair it would NOT be Dragonball. >.>;;

Right, the hair is the whole show... the whole fighting to save the planet, and mystical balls that grant wishes, and high energy fighting is all just to jazz it up... :?

Funny, how can you refuse to see a movie that doesn't even exist in the first place?
I meant hypothetically.

Two words.

Hairgel
Well, it sounds like two words.
Most people don't have crazy hair though? Just Goku and Vegeta, really (Ur, and Goten. :D ), and arguably Raditz. I don't see the hair being that big a deal. Maybe a little smaller in Goku's case, but the style would have to be there.

I tried writing an intro to a hypothetical DBZ movie (as I'm sure a few hundred people have done... :s ). I was thinking two things, really: mentor, pre-developed characters... and... umm... took the Legend of Zoro route. Granted I skipped over a few things with summaries because I wouldn't be able to get the characters right... but eh, just writing the opening scene made me think that there's hope, however slim. And I'm sure it'd be easy for a lot of people to complain about it.

*Tenshinhan and Chaozu fight Piccolo Minions*
*Piccolo kills Chaozu*
*T'en fights Piccolo*
*Goku shows up to save the day... really shortened version of the DB fight. And Goku's probably taller, but still young-looking*
*DB search Montage*
*People restored*
*Chichi and Goku wedding*
*Goku and Chichi talk about Gohan*
*Piccolo(Jr) Shows up, because inserting the tournament with the direction this is going would be weird*
*And that the burning of the OxKing's castle wouldn't make sense with the direction of the movie either... * *asks Daizex people if Piccolo should destroy it instead*
*Saiyan saga events are similar, though naturally retold and abridged*
*Tullece probably does something... preferably cool, and perhaps mocking the belief that he's related to Goku. Hopefully in a way that makes sense and doesn't piss people off*
*Characters need to be well developed, but not forced*
*Bolma probably gets pissed at Yamcha for having baseball fangirls and enjoying it*
*T'en and Lunch stuff probably elaborated on*
*And Chaozu apparently had cancer before training with Tsuru Sen'nin, which is why he doesn't grow and has other ... conditions*
*And... * *has no idea what to do with Yajirobe... probably same as the Anime...*

While I get the feeling this wouldn't be done right if it did happen... I like to make things up, and subsequently took a lot of notes that ... ur... aren't as sucky as this post. *runs away to hide in the mountains to train to fight Bebi Vegeta only to get eaten*

If it had to be live action (and not CG) I'd want to see it done in a similar style to A Scanner Darkly (or whatever it's called).

Whenever the issue of hair comes up, it always reminds me of the Pre-Xmen movie chatter about Wolverine's hair.

Hell, even if it were CG... the hair would still be shortened.

Look at Cloud of Final Fantasy 7, his hair was huge in the game, yet in Advent Children, it was made to be slightly realistic

I don't think the hair would be too much of a problem, as long as they made it so it was recognizable with the same features, who cares if they slightly change it.

I have a couple of things to say. I think 'The S' might have something to say about that TMNT comment :P. Second, the clothes in Dragonball have been the same way for twenty years. But for Spiderman and Xmen, which have been around since the 60s, the appearance of their characters have changed a lot. Besides, the recent comic book movies weren't even that good to begin with.. I honestly don't see why an american company should make the movie. I mean, Dragonball isn't even "ours" to begin with...I'll add more in a few but for now, your avatar is too big..

That process is known as rotoscope. It's when the filmmakers shoot the scenes with real actors, then paint over the frames, giving it the look of an animated painting. They might have used computers to do it in Waking Life and Scanner Darkly though, I'm not sure how exactly it works.
