I was just trying to confirm what you're saying is correct and I compared it to what VegettoEX said so I can compare his previous input to what we now know went into it. I was never implying you said that Funimation didn't want these things. I guess I was also under the impression that some of your comment was speculation so I apologize if it offended you. Also, you're right. Nothing needs to be proven to us and we're not owed an explanation, but it's still nice to brief everyone who's been wondering about the status of the Dragon Ball content not yet dubbed by Funimation. It's more of IT'S NICE TO KNOW rather than WE NEED TO KNOW. Also, I never said Funimation SHOULD or NEEDS to update the fanbase on the statuses of their Dragon Ball stuff, but I was just discussing how nice it would be if we finally got this content. It's almost like talking about a superhero movie you want to be made or a TV show you want to get a home release, nothing harmful.B wrote:I'm not sure why you quoted me as this basically covers everything I said. I never once claimed FUNimation didn't want these things. If you're referring to my theory on PtEtSS, VegettoEX offers more credence. It's a Bandai Namco production; for whatever reason, they did not see the upside to having FUNi dub it.
Why did anyone need to "prove" that FUNi was actively trying to acquire the license to something? Unless you're a shareholder, you're not owed an explanation for anything. It's this same weird, entitled nonsense with Kai's Buu arc and Super. FUNimation is under no obligation to update the masses on where negotiations are at. Ations ations ations.

I'd love to see this just to be able to view the 2008 special in better quality and with FUNimation's subtitles. Everything else is like yeah, sure, whatever, but that special is a gem.
I'd certainly forgive them putting a Z in the collection title for marketability as well. (And it's no more or less weird than the two recent movies using that branding as well.)

Re: Chris Sabat finally sheds light on DBZ specials not dubb
Yeah, I'm the one who suggested the 'Z' in the title, but I'm aware that they never had it in the title. Considering Dragon Ball Z is the most popular worldwide and Funimation's most popular DB property, I thought the Z would make since to demonstrate that DBZ is back!!! However, I understand a lot of people want it to be titled simply, Dragon Ball. And I actually wouldn't mind this due to the fact that Z doesn't define ALL of Dragon Ball and since DB Super is coming, Funimation might just want to title it: DRAGON BALL: LEGACY COLLECTION to get away from the notion that everything has to have 'Z' in it when outside Japan.Kuririn Fan wrote:Fun fact: none of them have Z in title, just Dragon Ball.ShadowBardock89 wrote:I would call it Dragon Ball Z Legacy Collection:

I wouldn't mind that at all, especially since it would be nice for them to embrace that Dragon Ball Z IS Dragon Ball when going from the manga and how the specials were originally titled. I just don't want people getting confused thinking the specials are from the first TV DB anime (those who just look at the title and not the cover art). At the end of the day, DBZ is what got people into Dragon Ball for the most part outside Japan so Funimation might want to reflect that in their title so new and old fans can look at the product and be like, "MORE DBZ!!! AWESOME!!!"

It's a shitty extra on a video game, specifically Raging Blast 2, probably the apex of people's waning interest in DB games. But the JSAT? It's not strictly a Toei production; there's probably a whole mess of red tape to go through to get it. It should be noted that none of Shueisha's Jump Festa specials have ever left Japan, not even the ones for hot-shit-king-of-the-mountain Naruto.

Your point still stands, but sadly only one of those was dubbed and released in the U.S. (I have the Mission: Protect the Waterfall Village! DVD).Super Saiyan Prime wrote:

Just want to add something. From what I remember, the 2008 special takes place TWO YEARS after the end of Dragon Ball Z. However, DB Super's timeline is not specified, but in both timelines: Goku is a radish farmer. But in the 2008 special, Gohan and Videl look EXACTLY the same as they did in high school but in DB Super, they are married adults with a child. So if Funimation ever gets to dub this thing, I hope they look at Yu Yu Hakusho: Eizou Hakusho as an example of making things more consistent (Japanese version has heroes wearing school clothes during summer, but Funimation changed it to where they JUST got out of school).
What I mean is, make the 2008 special not take place 2 years after Z, but 2 MONTHS after so it can connect better to Dragon Ball Super. In case no one saw my earlier comments, I think it'd be pretty cool if Funimation retitled the 2008 special "Dragon Ball Z: Remnants of F" to kind of make it a prequel tie-in for Resurrection F. I mean, they've done this before by changing the over-the-top original Japanese titles to something simpler, like Tree of Might.

I say it's very heavily implied, if not outright should be common knowledge that Super takes place at the same time that Batte of Gods did, which is 2 years after the 2008 special.mecha3000 wrote:Just want to add something. Oh, okay. If that's the case, never mind. Still kind of pissed Goten and Trunks don't even look like they've gotten older, but considering Goku was pint-sized at 15 years old, I guess it makes sense.Gonstead wrote:I say it's very heavily implied, if not outright should be common knowledge that Super takes place at the same time that Batte of Gods did, which is 2 years after the 2008 special.mecha3000 wrote:Just want to add something. I like that "budget" is actually a factor. FUNImation owns major titles, not to mention the biggest anime title, but are still super afraid to take risks. Releasing the original DBZ series in 1000 different formats makes sense, but new material? Way too risky.

What? FUNimation has released and streamed tons of different titles. Hell, just three days ago they announced they were going to dub and release The Boy and the Beast's in theatres for this March.Mosaic wrote:I like that "budget" is actually a factor. They are really own by Toei and Shueisha would probably want a lot of money off from 2008 Jump Special and Episode of Bardock. I guess that's when the budget part plays in place. Why spend so much money on something that is only 40 something minutes long?

With how much money funimation can make from a single release via remasterings and what not, I say it'd be good to dub it. To make something and limit the people who can watch and buy it is a bad business move. Toe is famous for this.

WHOA. Crazy to think it's now been 10 years since I joined Kanzenshuu. This was one of my first posts, if not my FIRST POST. It's so surreal how much time has passed. But anyway, it's just as sad that even ten years later from 2016 to now, these specials remain undubbed. I can't believe they dubbed the One Piece episode 590 crossover with TORIKO OF ALL PEOPLE, but they refuse to dub at the very least, Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans and Episode of Bardock. Obviously, I also want the 2008 Yo! Son Goku special, but as we're all well aware by now, the rights to that are complicated because it's a Jump Festa special (even though weirdly enough, Viz Media was able to dub a Jump Festa special with Naruto - maybe because Viz publishes the manga?).
Sorry to revive an essentially dead post and I don't know if that's not allowed or not, but I figure it's better than making a brand new one at this point. It just seems obvious with Crunchyroll's practices, we're never getting these specials dubbed. Just like for some reason, Yu Yu Hakusho movie 2 remains undubbed. Oh well. I'm probably the only person who would still like dubs of these, at this point anyway. I know I need to move on, but it's just so weird with Dragon Ball being on hiatus for so long that no one at Crunchyroll was like "Hey, there's some specials we never dubbed. Let's go dub 'em since we did the Toriko crossover one!"
Also, just noticed the last reply I got on this topic was literally 10 years ago to the day. WOW.

A few weeks ago I was talking to some buddies and I said "You remember that Dragon Ball Z special where they met Vegeta's brother and he's married to a grape woman and her head is literally a big grape? And her name is Gure short for Grape?" and they were like "NO. No I haven't. Wtf" and I got the opportunity to tell them about the Yo! Son Goku special. It's quite obscure now. Not sure why they never got around to it.
Re: Chris Sabat finally sheds light on DB specials not dubbed
Toei Animation probably does not have the rights to license it out. The special was funded and produced by Shueisha to celebrate JUMP's anniversary in 2008 and Toei Animation merely produced the special. Shueisha probably doesn't care about releasing it overseas.funrush wrote: Fri Jan 23, 2026 10:42 pm A few weeks ago I was talking to some buddies and I said "You remember that Dragon Ball Z special where they met Vegeta's brother and he's married to a grape woman and her head is literally a big grape? The 2008 OVA and the original 90s Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans are the closest we have to truly "lost" media.funrush wrote: Fri Jan 23, 2026 10:42 pm A few weeks ago I was talking to some buddies and I said "You remember that Dragon Ball Z special where they met Vegeta's brother and he's married to a grape woman and her head is literally a big grape? The 90s version of Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans was never released outside the Japanese Dragon Box back in 2003, and the 2008 Special got a very limited release in Japan back in 2009 (I think it came with a V-Jump magazine). You can technically download them if you want, but as far as owning them legally, they're as close to lost as lost can get.JulieYBM wrote: Fri Jan 23, 2026 11:57 pmOnly is we use the weird definitely of 'lost' that internet weirdos keep going to.
