Power Ranger influenced by DBZ?

Post by Katalyst » Wed Jan 24, 2007 11:03 pm

I know we've had topics like this before (what series have been influenced by DBZ and what-not) but I didn't want to bump any old topics.

Anyways, I was flipping through the channels last night and came across the first Power Rangers movie from way back in the day (when I was a young lad). I starting watching it to see how corny it was and as soon as I saw the "White Ranger" I noticed the huge similarity between his armor and the saiyan armor.

Why have you specified "US" in the thread title? The White Ranger design comes from the Japanese series Gosei Sentai Dairanger.

Yeah. Basically, Power Rangers was based on Gosei Sentai. In Power Rangers, they just had Americans act out the dialouge and such and they cut the fighting scenes from the Japanese series.
EDIT - Though, which came first? Vegeta's Manga introduction or Gosei's TV appearence?

uh... only Tommy's white costume and later zords came from it. The rest was Zyuranger footage.

But yea, I can see what you're talking about.

The "Gosei" part is specifically part of Dairanger's title. Each Sentai series has a title that's "_____ Sentai _____ranger".

In seasons 2 and 3 of Power Rangers (which included the White Ranger), most of the non-Zord action scenes were actually new for the American version. This was because they wanted to keep using the same Ranger costumes as in season 1 (from Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger) even after they ran out of footage from Zyuranger. They gave up on this for the fourth season (Zeo) and just changed all the costumes to match that year's sentai series from then on.

Dragon Ball Z started on TV in 1989, while Gosei Sentai Dairanger never started until 1994.

DaiRanger premiered in February 1993. Vegeta debuted in Shounen Jump in January 1989.

I was shocked when I recently found out Power Rangers was such a big cropped/edited thing with fight scenes taken from a totally different show.

Watched it way back in elementary school. Makes me feel slightly cheated that they did all that to it.
On hiatus.

Same, It always felt like something was..off in a way; they went from corny jokes and slapstick comedy with those two bullies to Godzilla like bouts..? Believe it or not, they explained this in an "I love the '90s" episode but for the sake of my childhood I was in denial. :o

You can call me Rick because I'm not actually Piccolo.
I missed out on all of the DB Movie fun, huh?
Point blank: it's gonna suck if you want it to. Personally, I'm seeing it as a comedy.

Ironically enough, Toei and Saban produced both shows at a time. Heck, it's because of some Rangers backlash it is assumed why Saban was so uptight on DBZ. After things died down a bit, know they let later PR seasons and Digimon get away with things they wouldn't let fly on DBZ.

It's actually not the first (or at least only) time Americans have chopped up one or more Japanese TV shows to make a new one. They did it with Robotech as well, didn't they? o_O
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

A hilarious example is Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years.

It was still a great hit though. True I admit I don't think anyone under 30 should badmougth Robotech for doing that, but still...
