You can't argue thats not 'that bad' or acceptable in ANY fashion.
I already pointed out I was disappointed by the Yajirobe chopping, though at the least we can still see him in the shot. But yeah, it's more awkward than intended, as all we see of him is his forehead and menacing eyebrows. The cropping doesn't really kill the shot for me though.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one not acting like a complete dickhead over this.

Meh. There are some shots that I don't mind, and there are some that I don't like. Whatever. When I get my set, I'll form my full opinions from there.

I will say one thing I'm very disappointed about, THE FREAKIN' DUB STILL DOESN'T HAVE HEAD CHA-LA!!! I thought FUNi said this was supposed to have the all of the "original Japanese audio"?

Otherwise, the set still looks like it was worth the $30 I paid for it.

Yeah. Especially those of us who don't even have the dang DVD yet. :D

It appears the db-destiny server has died at the time of this posting... :?

Edit - Never mind.

To be honest, this is far more saddening than the Widescreen. Because I did not know this from the start. I'll get over it, but seriously, JP Music means JP Music. NO COMPRIMISES!!!

I look at some screen-caps and go ick. Before I officially judge, I want to see how it looks when watched. That make sense?

Of course, acctually watching something & looking at caps that are specifically shown to capture the bad are 2 totally different things.

Wow...
I leave for a class and this happens! Anyway, these selected caps are pretty damn bad... As much as I hate the cropping and the deception... The subtitles, the episode count, the price, and the fact this is as good as it gets for American fans, leads me to buy it anyways...

That's a very good point. I think Godofchaos specifically mentioned he was literally combing through the set looking for flaws anyway, so I don't know how fair this analysis actually is (I mean, yeah, he's said some good stuff he's found in it, but he seems to overshadow it with what he finds unsatisfactory. No offense, man, but you know? o_o; ).

While having the pictures in this format don't seem exactly good for reference usage (I like to screencap stuff that looks particularly cool so I can look at them later when I'm drawing something related), I don't think it'll actually seem so bad when you're just playing the episodes through. I think, for now, despite the low opinions I've found thus far here, that I'll keep my pre-order for this set in place. I think I'll just be my own judge for this.
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

I hate to break it to you, but it's going to look worse when in motion. The characters will being moving in and out of the frame and it's just going to look extremely awkward.

Like in this shot, Gohan isn't just standing still, he's walking towards Goku. When you watch this scene in widescreen, Gohan will actually be slowly cutting his head out as he stumbles towards his father. You're just lying to yourself if you can sit through an episode so severely cropped and not notice anything wrong.

And sorry if I'm being a "dickhead", but what the hell kind of reaction do you expect? This is dumber than releasing the show in black and white. I guess we should all drop to our knees and praise FUNi every time they shit in a pot. God forbid we speak our minds when they do something that completely destroys the animation.

If you're suggesting we all have to buy this before we can judge it...well, I have here a magic rock I'd like to sell you. Seriously, though, does the ratio change back to 4:3 when you give FUNi the money? 'Cause if not, then I can judge it just fine by looking at the layout of each scene.

I did watch some of it on a normal tv laying down purely to watch, 2 friends watched it with me and we all noticed the cropping, and neither of them is a hardcore DBZ fan, and one wasn't aware of the cropping until she actually asked me to pause it and go back cause she thought she saw someone missing part of their face.

The cropping is bad enough that people who don't WATCH the damn show notice it, if you can't slide it past people who don't watch it normally, then it clearly is flawed.

I don't know if this is asking too much (or even legal), but if someone who has the disc can make a short clip of something like... Piccolo's death in English with Japanese music, that would be very awesome.

I really don't mind what quality it's in. I'm just dying to hear English with Japanese music in DBZ. And I figured Piccolo's death is a great example due to the music they used...

A few pictures from the box.

Front Cover- http://www.db-destiny.net/dbz1front.jpg

Back Cover- http://www.db-destiny.net/dbz1back.jpg

One of the Disk Trays (all are the same minus the dragon art in the back, so I decided to just scan one of them- http://www.db-destiny.net/dbz1tray.jpg

Cover of the booklet- http://www.db-destiny.net/dbz1booklet.jpg

Slightly smaller scan of a mistake in the booklet (there is more, on that same page in fact, but I decided to just point out this one, the arrows and question marks were added in The GIMP-
http://www.db-destiny.net/booklet-datemistake.jpg (at first i figured it meant to say FIRST instead of Final, but even then, it still doesn't make sense)

While scanning the packaging I noticed yet ANOTHER mistake.

The side of the pack is setup so if it appears if you put each set next to eachother it makes a big giant Dragonball Z logo....cept they made a mistake, the piece of the logo on set one (and maybe the others), is UNDER the slipcover that keeps the digipak from flailing apart, so the view is rendered useless (as many will recall funi did this with DBZ on vhs also, but this appears to be a nice clean version of the logo instead of a screenshot).

I cleaned up the cover and other stuff with a few basic blur filters, didn't rotate though due to lazyness, I might go ahead and try and make a video clip and a few audio clips later, but no promises.

I...I....goddamn. I don't even want to begin to touch the cropping issue. While it's not terrible for some shots, it's absolutely horrendous in others. Sigh...and this is what we're stuck with from now on. :?

And I don't like the trays they have for the discs. The Ultimate Matrix Collection has the same thing and I hate it. It's way too easy to scratch the discs that way. Well, looks like I better get to work on those custom cases...

As for the booklet, it appears that they were trying to do something cool...but didn't bother to proof-read.

In my opinion all of these shots are bearable minus the Yajirobe shot. Considering how bad some of the shots COULD have looked, for example, the 2 split frames which appear to have turned out alright, I don't think the cropping is such a huge deal. To be perfectly honest though I'm still not happy with it, but its is a cheap and inexpensive way to collect the series and you have to take it for what it is. I'm frankly AMAZED that some of you thought the cropping would be better. I mean those split screens could have been HIDEOUS, but instead the important parts of the picture are retained.

So, it looks like FUNimation hired a five year old retarted kid who lost his medication to write the booklet. Wonderful.

Word for word, basically what I also think, well said.

Gotta say, I'm pretty disappointed in that booklet, seeing the obvious errors FUNi made. It could've been much better, but evidently with that timeline addition, FUNi just thought "Well, let's say this and this here and there" without proper research. And the addition of "chips in Australia", as GoC has pointed out, makes no sense considering this is circled around the U.S. treatment. Also, did I mention how much that style of disc packaging drives me nuts? Why did FUNi have to go Warner Brothers on us and position the discs like that, I mean it just makes removing them always so risky, annoying, and a damned pain.
