About Android 17...

Post by successoroffate » Mon Feb 01, 2016 4:44 pm

If we were to look only at canon material from DBZ and excluding GT,looking back at the anime, He is seeing alive and well, even helping out getting energy for the Genkidama to defeat Majin Buu, but I am not quite sure if this was his last canon appearance in the Manga as well. When Cell absorbed 17, there was an exchange between Cell using A17's voice talking with 18 trying to convince her to join Cell. My question is, What is the current state of Android 17, more precisely, what was his last Canon appearance in the manga? Would you list Android 17 as an alive character that hasn't appear in DB Super?

He was shown during the Genki Dama scene in the manga. Toriyama has also revealed what he was up to after the Cell Arc in the recent Full Color manga Q&As, tying in with his appearance during that scene.
  • Q6: Where’d Artificial Human No. 17 go after the Cell arc, and what did he do?
He works in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, as an outstanding guard who doesn’t hold back against poachers.
It’s an ideal job for No. 17, who loves to be on his own and isn’t big on cooperating with others; since he’s so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. He’s married to a zoologist; they have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park.
He went and met No. 18 and Kuririn one time, but didn’t talk about what he’d been up to, maybe because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing.

May of 2014. So around a year before Super was even announced.

And why none of that was incorporated into a filler episode of Super or an OVA still mystifies me.

I agree, but it would be a really short special/OVA. To be honest, The only thing is that those series of events are a direct hit to GT, as it makes the Super 17 Saga even more...let's say senseless and this is coming from a GT fan.

Yep, his last appearance was him giving energy to Genki Dama and saying that he didn't hear that voice in a long time. I think i heard somewhere that Lunch was supposed to be there instead and line would make sense. C'mon, Toriyama, even Suno and Ha-chan made an appearance :(

Yes, you are right about that. Lunch was in the original draft of the scene where characters give their energy to Goku's Spirit Bomb in the Majin Boo arc of the manga.
Toriyama: No.17 during the Genki-Dama scene was actually Lunch in the rough draft.
Lunch went off chasing after Tenshinhan. Since Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu moved around from place to place as they trained, they really gave her the slip.
The funny thing about that is in another interview, Toriyama stated the reason Lunch didn't appear later in the manga was because he thought fans wouldn't recognise who she was.

Why did Toriyama make the assumption that his readers share his "move on & forget" mentality? Its kind of insulting...

It had been almost 7 years (real world) since she appeared in the manga and the series was really hitting it's stride with it's largest readership during the Saiyan/Freeza Arcs if I remember correctly. By the time that scene would have happened in the Buu Arc, there's no telling how many of the readers would have remembered her or would have even gotten into the series and just read along in Jump after she was already written out. It's not really a great excuse when you have have lesser characters appearing from earlier points in the series, but there is at least some logic to it. (Not that I agree with the choice, mind you.)

17's final canon appearance was in Buu Arc. He gave his chi to Goku's Genki Dama & said somethin along the lines of "its been a long time since I heard his voice". Which is bad writing, cuz the both have never interacted even ONCE throughout the whole series, unless Gero has installed some vocal system during his contruction of A17

With that bein said, I'm one of those few that liked his role & character in GT. He brings this uber coolness, rivalling Future Trunks in terms of appearance. For such cool looking, somewhat humanoid villain kicking ass (lets face it, worst comes to worst Broly was the only human-esque villain we got in an otherwise bakemono/monsters fillex show like Super 13, Janemba, Hiru).

But his character was treated so amateurish, that it ultimately felt pointless. His fight against GT fighters, killing Gero AGAIN, then smashin SSJ4 Goku. Then killing Myuu. Just...lacks any real drama or tension. Which is a shame, considering how cool & suave his design & voice was (dunno who's his seiyuu)

For the record, #17's seiyuu is Shigeru Nakahara.

@Lord Beerus

Thank you for sharing. Do you know any others shows/works he has lend his voice. I'm curious as I've not heard his voice in any biggies I've watched so far (Inuyasha: Final Act, HXH2011, FMAB, DN, etc).

I think his voice is suitable to portray any cool, suave & soft-spoken characters. I'm not a Japanese speaker, but can accurately specify who's voice is best for which. Ex: Hidekatsu Shibata (Yi Xing Long) voiced King Bradley frm FMAB with nuanced regal attitude. Also, iirc seiyuu of Kimblee (FMAB) also voiced Genthru/Bomber frm HXH2011. He's got this sickening type voice, which I wouldnt want to meet in my life lol

I remember him as Megrez Zeta Alberich from Saint Seiya, Kurama's demon form in Yu Yu Hakusho and Trowa Barton from Gundam Wing.
He isn't acting in many series tough from what I've learned. There are actors that I hear in almost everything I ever saw :/
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

If one had to rationalize this, we could guess that 17 possessed some limited form of consciousness while he was part of Cell (saw/heard everything Cell saw/heard) and retained that information when he was wished back, so he'd know Goku's voice that way. I don't think that's too much of a stretch, considering the ambiguity of how the hell Cell's absorption of the Androids actually worked in the first place.

17 is married now and lives his life as a park ranger with his wife and children. His story is over and I don't see him coming back with a major role in Super. He may come back in filler at some point though.

IIRC,Android 17's last appearance in the manga is when Goku was charging the Genki Dama against Pure Boo.It was supposed to be Launch but he was replaced by Android 17.

What do you mean ''filler'' ? There's no such thing as filler in Super since the Anime is the main product of it.That's like saying GT had fillers.Unless you mean fillers as in slice of life episodes.

When I say "filler" I mean episodes that don't add progress to the story, that don't change the plot in any way, and overall just adds extra scenes to make the Arc longer. An example is where an episode was dedicated to the Pilaf gang and their shenanigans in the Battle of Gods arc, or when Oolong and Beerus spent an entire episode playing a silly game of rock, paper, and scissors.

Maybe I should find another word, but that is my reasoning.
