This is what the 4:3 screen shots on the back of the box should have looked like...
I can't imagine that FUNI has a lot of faith in the widescreen format if they're not even willing to put widescreen captures on the box.

Hm...I have a question:
Framing the 4:3 masters is a variable. It's not always smack in the middle of the film master, as shown by FUNi themselves with the Kaio and Gregory shots. Now, in my mind, that's something that takes time and time = money of course.
Is it possible that FUNi ordered film masters thinking they'd just get a 4:3 image and ended up with the full film masters and panicked/cut corners by letterboxing the whole thing to save time and make the remastering process more automated?
Someone who is more knowledgable about the processes involved in animation feel free to chip in. I may be way out there, but I think it's a feasible theory.

on the back of the cover, it appears to only have 5.1 surround sound with the english dialogue and japanese music, i thought we would also have 5.1 surround sound with the american dub music, is this not the case??

Man, I laughed hysterically at the Nappa cropping!
I'm actually writing a college paper on the issue!

So is there anything that we as angry fans can do? If a bunch of people hate this set will Funi change it?

I doubt it. It didn't work the other fifty times.

Nope. Show's already telecined in 16:9. Buy it or don't buy it, those are the only options. The chances of them going back and redoing anything are highly unlikely.

What really urks me about this whole thing is that everybody is going to be buying the new dvd set and giving funi more money! If nobody bought them then funi would loose money realizing what failures they really are and maybe funi would release a GREAT box set, but thats only whishful thinking.

So what's the deal with the color? Is it truley like the Original Masters? Or did they still edit stuff?

Their new masters are 16:9... If no one bought the set, they might release something better... However, it would
still be in widescreen.

They toyed with it. It looks like they played with the color temperature and a few other things, aside from the cheap and nasty DVNR (digital video noise reduction).

Well... for this first set, anyway. I'm sure news about how truly crappy these sets are will spread like wildfire in no time, thus pretty much leaving FUNi screwed for their future "remastered" sets (except for the handful of people who run into the set and buy it on a whime without knowing anything about the cropping

).
As for me, I was thinking about cancelling my pre-order... but how else am I gonna get these episodes? The set's cheap price will definitely be one of the key factors for actually buying this set. I'll probably end up getting FUNi's remastered Nameck episodes and from then on out, just get the singles that have my favorite episodes. Sure, they won't be consistent in terms of the aspect ratio, or their set appearance, but I'm just strange like that. Heck, I might even just paste a collage of manga scans from that particular arc over that cross-eyed Vegeta if I'm ever bored...

I'm with Daemon in that I still kinda want this for the episodes. But I'm holding off on doing anything until I see Corey's in-depth review.

It's still the English dub, just not with the English music.

I think he meant the American dub with the Faulconer music.

Something wierd on that matter...
I actually emailed Faulconer about this. I asked if he was being entirely replaced with the Japanese music. He said no, that there was seperate dub music for the first 63 episodes, and then his music will be retained for the remaining 200-something, and that it would in fact be mixed into 5.1 surround sound.

In a ditch somewhere

Maybe FUNi lied to him as well?

The only part that sounds wrong is the 5.1 mix for the dub music. It's well established that Faulconer didn't do the music for the UUE dub of episodes 1-67, so there's no version of those episodes that uses his music.
The default audio track will be 5.1 English + Japanese music for the entire series.
