Re: Dragon Ball Z Movie Placement Order
Placement for some of the older movies is tricky, although I feel that The World's Strongest, The Tree of Might and Lord Slug should come before Goku's battle with Freeza, even if there are several characters who are inexplicably not dead.
As for the two TV specials, I'd place Bardock: The Father of Goku just after episode 44 after we get our first glimpse of Freeza. It also helps to build Dodoria up as a badass before he gets killed by Vegeta. The History of Trunks on the other hand, I'd place a little later, after episode 133 to avoid blowing that 19 and 20 weren't the Androids Trunks warned Goku about and once again build up the threat of these enemies before they get into action for the main story.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Movie Placement Order
I know Movie 3 can technically only be placed during the Android time skip years, but i always place it in the middle of the Namek Saga, immediately after Vegeta's "My Wrath" scene. Mainly because FUNimation originally released it as a three-part TV episode and aired it at that point. It was also made at roughly the same time (1990) so the character designs match too.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Movie Placement Order
I just watch it according to date of release. Movie 3 was released between episodes 54 and 55, so I watch in that order, even if the story doesn't make sense. It's a side story, after all.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Movie Placement Order
My theory on the old DBZ movies placement.
DBZ Movie 1 - Set before DBZ, but I see it as a alternate timeline where Radditz never comes to Earth. It can explain why Goku was surprise by Piccolo's weight clothes and how Krillin knows Gohan.
DBZ Movie 2 - Set after Vegeta was defeated, but Piccolo is still alive. I see it set in a alternate timeline where Piccolo does not die and Goku kills Vegeta. They wait another year to wish back everyone.
DBZ Movie 3 - Set after Vegeta as defeated, but everyone is still alive. I see it set in a alternate timeline where Goku got wish back early and was able to defeat both Nappa and Vegeta. Everyone is not dead, so there is no need to go to Namek.
DBZ Movie 4 - The movie was released when Piccolo was fighting Freeza on Namek. However everyone is still on Earth during the movie and Goku can't transform into a real SSj. You could say that this movie is set in a timeline where Piccolo kills both Freeza and Vegeta while Tien, Yamcha and Chazou choose to stay dead. However this movie has a flashback to DBZ Movie 3. Tien, Yamcha and Chazou are still alive in that movie and are nowhere to be seen in DBZ Movie 4.
DBZ Movie 5 - Most likely set after Trunks defeats Freeza. This one almost fits, but Goku can't go SSj right off the bat, Gohan still has his tail when he would no longer need it, Gohan still has his old hair cut style, Vegeta is nowhere to be seen and Trunks is not mention once. You could say that DBZ Movie 5 is set in a timeline where Goku kills Freeza on Namek for good.
DBZ Movie 6 - This film is a direct sequel to the fifth movie and was released when Vegeta became a SSj in the anime. You say that the movie is set before Dr. Gero and #19 show up or during the Cell games. When it can't fit during neither of those days. Dende is the new Kami of Earth in the movie and Goku had no idea where New Namek was until he visit King Kai in the Cell saga. Piccolo would not be fused with Kami if it was set before Dr. Gero and #19 shows up. It can't be set during the Cell games because Goku and Vegeta would be much stronger. Trunks is nowhere to be seen, Goku & Vegeta don't go beyond SSj, Gohan can't go SSj and he is the same height as Krillin. My theory is that DBZ Movie 6 is set in a timeline that Vegeta killed Dr. Gero before he can awaken #16-18 and Piccolo kills Cell.
DBZ Movie 7 - The movie came out when they enter the Room of Spirit and Time. However Goku would still not be strong enough to fight, Trunks still has his sword, his hair is still shorter, neither Goku or Vegeta can go beyond SSj, Gohan still can't go SSj, Gohan is still the same height as Krillin and you still have Cell on the loose too. You could say that DBZ Movie 7 is set in a timeline where they find the switch to blow up #17 and #18, Goku does not get sick and Cell never went back in time.
DBZ Movie 8 - Release around the time when Mr. Satan fights Cell. This movie almost fits, but Goku and Gohan are seen in their base forms when they are FPSSj during the Cell Game break. Everyone is still going out doing every day things when the whole planet was in doomsday panic and everything would be close. Cell is nowhere to be seen or mention in the movie too. Another possible theory is that this movie is set in a timeline where Cell does not host the Cell Games and chooses to wait around while Goku is ready to fight.
DBZ Movie 9 - Release after the Cell games. This one fits perfectly expect for no mention of Goten. You can easily watch this one right after Future Trunks kills Cell in his timeline.
DBZ Movie 10 - The movie was release when they arrive at Babidi's ship. The movie seem to be set before Goku returns to Earth. However Goten knows who his dad is, Videl knows that Gohan can go SSj and Videl knows what the Dragon Balls are. So the movie can't fit before the new Tenkachi Budokai. You could see this one as a what if sequel to DBZ Movie 8 and Gohan told Videl about him being the mysterious gold fighter.
DBZ Movie 11 - The movie was release when Fat Buu first show up. However the movie seems to be set when Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and Kaioshin are at Babidi's spaceship. Krillin would still be stone and not with Goten, Trunks and #18 if the movie was set around that time period. Goku is still in Other World at the end of the movie. You could see this movie set in a timeline where Goku never went back to Earth for one day and Krillin choose not to go with Kaioshin to fight Babidi.
DBZ Movie 12 - Release around the time when Gotenks was fighting Buu. Gohan is still on Earth when he should be training at the Kaioshin Planet, Goten and Trunks should be at Kami's lookout, Videl should be dead, they already use the Dragon Balls and that they would need to wait to use them again. Mr. Satan is also seen in the movie with no mention of Fat Buu whatsoever. This movie has a lot of references to the older movies. I see this movie set in a timeline where Gohan kills Super Buu which explain why he is on Earth now.
DBZ Movie 13 - Most likely set a year after Kid Buu was defeated and three years before BOG/Super. While not stated, they needed to wait a period of time to use the Dragon Balls again. Goku use the Dragon Balls 6 months after Kid Buu so that he can use erase the memories of Majin Buu in the public eye. Fat Buu and Mr. Satan are not seen in the movie, but I assume that Buu is taking a nap. It can explain on why he is not seen helping out Goku and the others against Hirudegarn.
DBZ Movie 1 - Set before DBZ, but I see it as a alternate timeline where Radditz never comes to Earth. It can explain why Goku was surprise by Piccolo's weight clothes and how Krillin knows Gohan.

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of the spoilers that would come from watching History of Trunks that early, that's probably a good idea. But I don't understand why you'd wanna watch the Bardock special so early?SaiyamanMS wrote:Placement for some of the older movies is tricky, although I feel that The World's Strongest, The Tree of Might and Lord Slug should come before Goku's battle with Freeza, even if there are several characters who are inexplicably not dead.

With DBZ Movies 1, I would watch it right after Radditz is dead. DBZ Movies 2-4 can be watch after Vegeta is defeated. Showing DBZ Movie 1 before you start DBZ is not a good idea since it does spoil Gohan if you haven't seen the show yet.

Re: Dragon Ball Z Movie Placement Order
I mostly just watch the movies in release order on their own. Or, most of the time, in my spare time when I have nothing better to do. I don't really try and incorporate them into a watch of the series, except for BoG and RF for obvious reasons.
Basically, what I do is...
Saiyan Arc
TV Special 1 - This introduces us to Freeza and reveals that he was the one who blew up Planet Vegeta.
Freeza Arc
TV Special 2 - When I watch the Trunks Special before I watch the Cell Arc, it puts me in a better mood.
Cell Arc
Buu Arc
Jump Special
Battle of Gods
Resurrection F
Universe 6 Arc
Also, I skip a lot of filler episodes in my run of Z. I tend to skip the episodes where not much happens. For example, when I watch the Cell Arc, I skip the Mr. Shu one along with the whole Garlic Jr. Arc. I do, however, watch the early Saiyan Arc filler and Afterlife Tournament Arc. I also watch the first two episodes of Super before I start Battle of Gods.

The fact that you didn't even bother to link your own thread shows a lack of effort or care, so why would you expect anyone else to put that kind of research and effort in?AnimeMaakuo wrote:I already made a similar thread of this a long time ago, except without the newer stuff. I did link my thread, Mike. I don't understand how you missed that unless you replied as soon as I did. I'm not forcing anybody to do anything. He had an idea and wanted to make a discussion thread about it. Why should he know or care about a thread that's over a year and a half old?
Anyway, one thing I came to realize is that out of all of the movies, one actually might have a valid alternate-universe placement: Movie 7, which could take place in the timeline that the Trunks from Cell's time traveled to. It means Movie 7 Trunks meets a rather unfortunate fate, though...

Your thread was by release date, I believe? I wanted to do mine based on where the best place in the series is to watch the movies (chronologically and without spoilers)AnimeMaakuo wrote:I already made a similar thread of this a long time ago, except without the newer stuff.
