What would have 2nd-form Cell done if it stuck around longer

By now we all know that Toriyama stated he wanted Cell's second form to stay around for longer. But now I'm just thinking...what do you think Toriyama was intending to do with him? What would have happened if his editor didn't push him to make Cell transform again so quickly?

I'm wondering this because, while 2nd-form Cell doesn't last for long, the way he gets his final form made a lot of sense in-character. Especially for Vegeta and Krillin. It feels like that could have always been the way Toriyama was going to continue the story. And then there's the fact that Cell would have to transform before Goku and Gohan came out of the Room of Spirit and Time. So...what did Toriyama actually cut out?

It depends on how soon Mr.Toriyama was told to drop him. It's like you said the story feels right, there's nothing that I can see which denounces a hasty change in direction.
If it was as soon as the editor saw the design, I think the intention would be to extend Vegeta's and Trunks arrival. Giving more depth to Lazuli search, maybe giving Kuririn a Tenshinhan like role in the delay of the absorption,
If it was much later during the fight with Vegeta, we could've seen hide and track Cell. Something like what happened with Dr.Gero.

I assume the editor told Toriyama this right after seeing the design, in which case Toriyama's idea would probably have been to actually make Cell and Vegeta have an even, prolonged fight instead of a curbstomp making the Semi-Perfect form obsolete almost immediately and leading the desperate Cell to absorb 18 quickly.

Toriyama's plan to me all along indicated Semi Perfect Cell being "active" equally if not more than Imperfect Cell. Playing mind-games, using heroes abilities & traits against them, which ultimately makes his long, promised & hyped Perfect form to payoff very-well

Lets face it. Character-wise, Imperfect Cell was solid. Ginger Town showdown against Super Namekian Piccolo to Head-On fight clash against 16 to absorb 17 provided some genuinely rivetting moments.

Toriyama musta planned the same, as I feel he takes some liking for 2nd Form Cell.

If only he implemented same style for Fat & Super Boo. Would've made a world of difference

I kinda agree with Kuririn Fan. Cell's appeal lies in his character when he displayed cunningness against Piccolo @ Ginger Town, arrogance & manipulation against Super Vegeta & finally laid-back confidence against Goku

Cell arguably played most actively until his perfection, after which Toriyama stripped all of his unique character traits by Cell Games & got his ass handed to him by SSJ2 Kid Gohan

Well, add to that the fact that I enjoy his Semi-Perfect look better than any other. It was functional and colorful. No wings when they were not used, just the tail to absorb another Android, and whomever he could feed from. His torso looked like it could stretch and make a bomb, and he was kept a monster in face, which adds to a sleazy personality. I can only enjoy his Perfect form through the Juniors.

Well, 2nd-Form Cell's objective was to find and absorb #18 to complete his final evolution to his perfect form. I feel if Cell were to stick around in his second-form for a bit longer and then Trunks, Tenshinhan, Kuririn and #16 would have to do to hide, protect or destroy #18. I assume this'll what would have happened if Toriyama continued with 2nd-Form Cell.

I hear often Cell calling it a good villain until they reach its perfect form and an arrogant idiot later, once this form reached. I rather think that the characterization of Cell is consistent and perfect from beginning to end. After reaching its ultimate goal which is the perfect form what he should do? Conquer the Universe and dominate all his opponents? Old story! We have already Frieza who had similar aspirations and, in part, Piccolo Daimao before him. No, he needed a different villain who had some aspects that sent back to his predecessors and others that were new and shape a similar enemy to his opponents: eager to face increasingly strong opponents and who does not hesitate to take risks for doing so (none of the previous villain shares these characteristics: Vegeta and Frieza would never offered a senzu to Goku only to continue a grait fight, thus its unique traits remain). He himself says that he had no desire for conquest which in a sense leads him to a "higher" level in the preceding enemies: could conquer the whole universe if he wanted to and he is well aware, but that power it does not do anything and it is not in the least fascinated; his only desire is entertainment, show the world its perfection, terrorizing his opponents and proving his superiority. His arrogance and his inordinate self-reliance rest on solid foundations such as the certainty that the computer that created had given him: when he became the 'be perfect no one could compete with him, (apparently the computer does had come to terms with the second level of ssj XD). In its first forms he was more shrewd and calculating, but he was in a different context. In his perfect form, he was aware of no longer having to fear anyone


This, at least, until Kid Gohan reached SSJ2. Then Cell becomes really a copy of Vegeta and Frieza, and behaving at the same way.
I would have preferred that Toriyama managing the end of the saga in a total different way

I agree with this, but only because Semi-Perfect Cell powered up to his fullest, and was still outmatched by Super Vegeta. If Semi-Perfect Cell had absorbed people prior to facing Vegeta or absorbing 18, his Full Power could have been greater, and the gap between it and his Perfect form smaller. That's one explanation.
