Which characters/scenes had "more to it" in Dubs?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

There is no dub canon. It was a bad line in the script. Even in the infancy of DB on the net, it wouldn't have taken that long to find out that Bardock wasn't a scientist.
Wait people are making dub canons now?

Actually, I can corroborate that. For Vegito, they basically had Brian Drummond do a Kirby Morrow impression, which...actually worked out really well as far as the voice went. Here's a clip, if you're curious.

I hope not.

My bad I should've clarified. I knew the Ocean dub did that, but Ree's comment made it appear that Funimation Buu Saga Ki would (oddly) follow in Oceans footsteps which I highly doubt is the case

I linked to the thread about the singular voice in Buu Kai on the last page.

As far as Bardock, anyone could look up the facts but when most of the target audience are <10 most of them will take it as fact

What Ree says here regarding the Fusion voices is true, having come straight from Justin Cook while in the presence of both Chris Sabat and Sean Schemmel. It was at a panel.

All that says is that FUNi could've written damn near anything and their audience would've taken it as such. That doesn't make your point any stronger or what they did any better. Fact is that it's a bad line because it's contradicted. No amount of mental gymnastics will change that Bardock isn't a scientist. The line is bad regardless of whether the audience knows it to be the case yet.

Well that's something I don't necessarily like. They got it right the first time and they're still doing it in the games, so what's the deal?

We all know the line is false,i was never arguing for its accuracy. my point was that it was at least somewhat of a step in the right direction but the lack of foresight screwed them over

A step in the right direction would be to accurately translate it.

Apparently, it's Sean Schemmel doing a Chris Sabat impression. I, too, was nothing short of mystified when I heard about it. While the Kai dub doesn't always try to voice match exactly, I find it odd that they'd make a such a drastic change, especially when, as you pointed out, the Z dub was faithful in this regard.

Funimation ditched the dual voices? Well that's a change I can get behind. Faithful or not the dual voices gimmick is just that.. a gimmick. While I found it cool as a kid I now notice how it limits the individual actor's ability to give a great performance. Brian Drummond's Vegetto and Tabitha St. Germain's Gotenks were far more emotive than their Funimation counterparts because they didn't have that restriction placed on them.

You had, no one else does, why should the dub go your way? If you dont like the show why dont you make one yourself?

I know but you said that the original dialogue is a "problem" that needs to be "fixed". If you really wanted to say its your opinion, just say that you dont feel like the original dialogue was all that entertaining, but not that its a problem.

I really have to hear it for myself before I can fully judge. I just loved the dual voices as a kid and still to this day, so this will be a gradual adjustment I guess if it's gonna be the new 'norm.'
Oh well. I wasn't fond of the replacement Kai voices either at first but now I adore most of them lol

Just a general comment, I don't think for me, the original Japanese product is superior by default. The goal should be to most correctly capture Toriyama's vision right? As the manga was the original medium, I think in theory foreign dubs (including Funi's work) could do a better job of capturing some scenes in the manga than the Japanese anime did.

I wouldn't necessarily that this has actually happened, but if somebody felt a given character's voice acting delivery in a given scene, or the dialogue in terms of the script was superior, and comes closer to what Toriyama was going for, I couldn't disagree.

This is mostly concerning canon scenes that originate in the manga, though. If we're discussing filler, Toei probably has an advantage, as it wrote the original content. I haven't paid enough attention to Funi's work in recent memory (aside from Kai, but so little non-canon content is remaining that it's hard to judge), but in particular, if Schemmel and the writers have done a better job of channeling Toriyama's Goku (as more of a battle-loving Saiyan type as opposed to the superhero/messianic version the fandom and I believe Toriyama have criticized Toei as putting forth), then to me that's a big advantage.

For Z, oh hell yeah. For Kai, I respectfully disagree. I think the dub is better than the original in terms of the voice acting.
I see where you're coming from, but i still prefer the original Kai.
