Music is an old thing that was done. Don't know if you're familiar with this, but as I heard, "Battle of the Planets" had different music than "Gatchaman" did, as well as the other changes. And from what I understand, most of the world didn't get "Go Lion". They got "Voltron". Will grant the latter's music is better than the former's so not surprising, especially since it was more popular elsewhere than the original was in Japan.

I just watched the newest episode of Gotham and remembered something. Maybe the people that decided to call Freeza "Frieza" were big fans of Mr. Freeze aka Victor Fries which is pronounced freeze either way in BTAS. Batman TAS was big in the early-mid 90's and Freeze's first episode won a Emmy. No clue why, just a random thought.

I thought it was because Freeza was copyrighted in the U.S. by some other company so FUNI went with Frieza.

I'll give you that here in Portugal we got the original music and the correct DB-DBZ order. But accurate scripts? Yeah, no. Hell no. Not even CLOSE.

Ha ha, I can confirm this. However, we've got some of the best screams - https://youtu.be/8cL1H6n8xGI?t=4m

Frankly, aside from some of the attack names, I really don't give a damn about the names. I'll accept either language (though I'm most familiar with the American names),

I still hate when people say "HIFL" instead of "Hell". Funimation stop using "HIFL" ages ago and I wish some fans would stop using it. I don't recall them saying "HIFL" in their dub of GT when it aired on Toonami in 2004.

I think people still use it because it's humorous. I'm pretty sure 99.9% people know it was supposed to be hell.

I'd be pretty upset as well if I saw numerous individuals consistently misspelling the acronym for "Home for Infinite Losers," because HIFL would mean "Home Infinite for Losers."
I think the only reason why you're spelling it as such is because you're basing your knowledge off of how the acronym was pronounced in this scene from TeamFourStar.

You also stated that you don't recall FUNimation using "HIFL" "HFIL" for their edited (Toonami version) dub of Dragon Ball GT, which had only stopped airing on NickToons a little over a year ago. I made a quick video comparison to showcase that they actually did continue to use "HFIL" for when they refer to Hell in the show.

So, although FUNimation has stopped using the term "Home for Infinite Losers" in every Dragon Ball series dub succeeding Dragon Ball GT, it may still remain relevant to the people who grew up with watching the show on NickToons, which as I've previously noted, just stopped airing a little over a year ago.

I always found the name HIFL to be a very stupid name. I think Funimation should have picked something like Hades or the Underworld instead.

I completely agree with you. I think "HIFL" is a stupid "name". What does that even stand for?

Anyways back on topic. As for HFIL, I think it's perfectly justified given it's an alternative to the uncensored version. There really isn't any other acronym that can substitute "HELL" while maintaining the spelling similarity. "HFIL" was a perfectly rational choice.
If you have any Canadian dubbed recorded material and would like to preserve it, please PM me!

If it wasn't enough that both DBGod's post as well as my own initial response to Hellspawn28 focused heavily on the fact that he consistently misspells the acronym for "Home for Infinite Losers" as "HIFL", I don't know what much more it could take to get the point across.

It is "HFIL," not "HIFL."

Please reread my original response.

I don't feel like reading the entire thread, but in short: no. I use exclusively Japanese terminology on here, and I never watch the dub (or dubs of anything, really), but I casually use "Tien" and such when I'm talking to my friends in real life.

It didn't bother me as I grew up with the Dub names but as I'm re-watching the entirety of Dragon ball in subs for the first time some things do bother me. Like Yamucha becoming Yamcha and Tenshinhan becoming Tienshinhan. All the small changes in the way names are spelt and slightly pronounced bothers me for some reason even though I grew up with the dub. Things like Nyoi-bo or Nyo-bo (sorry I forgot already) becoming Power Pole and Kinto'un becoming Nimbus or flying Nimbus I can understand but now it's starting to feel like if I don't pronounce or speak of certain names the way they're intended it feels wrong.

I wonder if I'll feel the same when watching DBZ subbed.

Interestingly enough, during the Buu Saga on tv they referred to it as "Down Below".

Maybe. I mean, some dub names like Hercule, Master Shen, Hero, Fasha and Pikkon are unnecessary, I'd say.

Given that she's only referred to by name in the credits, it's not too surprising they changed it.
