Can we see a sample of something you've done?
Here is some of my work

I'll have better more recent ones coming on soon too.
Hmm... interesting work you did with the "Kung Pow!!" short. And you say you've got better stuff, too? :D

I sure hope you can get those up soon; I'd like to see more of what you can do. Meanwhile... Kaboom, do you think we can fit him in as a video editor for this? o.o
oo Wow. I'll do my best if I'm chosen.
And I should have a new DBZ AMV up on youtube very soon. Though I wish I had the right compresser software cos the stuff that comes with iMovie for compressing files is not that amazing. I'll try and see if I can grab Fianl Cut Pro soon.

That would be useful. We need good quality for the finished product. ^^; Looking forward to seeing how your new AMV is.

And don't worry about whether or not you're chosen... Kaboom's already decided it. xD;;

Kinofourpaws, signatures are only 4 lines long. Anyways, I just want to say well done to you all for throwing this together. I didn't expect this crazy idea of making our own dub to materialize.

Well done! :P

I thought I had four lines! Ignore the spacing! D:

And, yeah, it's a good thing we've gotten this far... now if we can manage to see it through to the end and people retain interest in the project throughout, that'd be great! xD;;

Though, I've no place to complain about the thing being neglected if I do the same thing... D: *scoots off to try to do something*

UPDATE!

No, folks, the project is not dead; how could you suggest such a thing? It's just that most of the work at the moment is happening behind the scenes and mostly by me. A few updates as to what is going on.
  • First off, we almost have a final script for the movie. Mr. Announcer and I are each writing one (Mine's done, hers is almost done, I believe) and we'll be cross-referencing them to end up with a good, final script.

 I'm also working on a script for the trailer. What I think we'll be doing with that is that Conan will actually make an audio-less version first from the script, which our lovely VAs will use as a reference for their lip syncing. Once folks are done recording for it is when Conan will add the recorded audio, as well as music and such, to make it into a pretty little final product.

 I have begun to tirelessly pore my way through the lovely technical manuals at amv.org, and been playing around with some of the related software, in hopes of improving my previously minute knowledge of the technical aspects of video editing. With any luck, I'll be able to help out with or do a big chunk of the major editing when the time comes for that.

 Along with the scripts, Mr. A and I will be collaborating on a little "promotional poster," which should be nice.
...And... brace yourselves, this is the biggest announcement of the bunch.
  • :!: We need a new Goku.
Yes, you read that right. "But I thought Daniel was going to be Goku," you say? Well, yes, he was originally slated to voice Goku. However, after getting a few more recording samples from him, analyzing them closely, and talking with Rick and Kino about it, I decided that we really can't have him as Goku. His voice-working was excellent, especially his screams and Kaio-Ken yell. However, after a long and close series of listens, it seems he just has a little too much of an accent for all the dialogue Goku will be doing. Now, there's no offense meant towards Dan, and with any other character, it wouldn't be a problem. But the honest fact is that, being a largely English-based production but having the main character have such a heavy accent would only end up detracting from the overall experience for most of its audience.

I talked to Dan about it, and he's okay with it, was very understanding, and I'd like to thank him once again for being so okay and understanding, along with offering one last apology for the whole mess.

But that leaves us with an interesting situation, and that is that we're going to be holding a second set of auditions. This one will be a little more in-depth and intricate, since it's for the solitary role of Goku.

Anyone who's interested, start practicing. A few of you did very well with Goku the first time around, and I encourage everyone who tried out for him to give it another shot. Even those of you who already have been casted are still plenty eligible; don't worry about it.

I'll have an official thread put together for the Goku audition within the next two or three days.

Like I said, as far as the scripting goes... I know you guys are really good at writing already, but if you need a third party to help with the proofreading, I'll be here for that. (Even really great writers sometimes overlook mistakes... >.>) You know where to contact me. :)

I personally liked the accent Dan had; it reminded me of Peter Kelamis. And, of course this is my opinion, but Kelamis really got the role (at least in the movies... he failed in the later ocean dub).
But, if you must recast, it is in the end up to you.

off-topic: OK, thanks. I fixed it.

on-topic: I wish I had a half-decent mike, then I would attempt to try out for at least one character... but a 13 year old with a voice that he can't keep consistent pry wouldn't work out too well.

So, what's the concept for the poster? Hopefully, it has a dark and gloomy theme. I'd appreciate it if someone posted it, so we could see its progress. The more people that work on it, the better. :P We shouldn't confine the project's cast to solely their given roles.

Since I don't have time to pour through 33 pages of thread right now, would someone be so kind as to provide a summary for me? What's accomplished so far? Is there any other talent needed? I am very interested in this.

As for me, I am a very technical person; I love animation and know a ton about video. I've acted in four independent video pieces in the past two years: three of which I shot and edited myself, and two of which I provided Voice Over work for.

I've always thought of doing something like this, but never anticipated it actually following through. Please let me know what I can do to help!

Oh, boy. Well, in a nutshell...

I suggested that rather than complain about dubs, we should dub something ourselves. People got interested. Really interested. We picked a movie. We decided on key positions (video editors, director [moi], scriptwriters, sound editors, footage provider, etc...). We decided on a few things like a title for the movie. We held auditions. Everyone but Goku has been solidly cast.

Right now, we're working on getting a final script put together by crossreferencing mine and Mr. Announcer's versions together. Also, circumstances have left us without a Goku, so we'll be holding a second round of auditions, specifically for the part of Goku, within the next few days. Conan is working on making a trailer, which I'm helping him out with a bit.

As for how to help, well, there's really two big ways you can. One would be to audition for Goku, if you think you've got the voice and lungs for it. That's open to everybody. Another would be to help out with one of the other positions. From what you said, you might be able to help out a lot as a video editor (which involves more splicing in and moving around audio than anything actually having to do with video). It's up to you.

Thank you for the explanation!

So, when you say you've casted everyone but Goku, does that mean everyone but Goku, or just those that appear in this particular movie? (Which would be...?)

I don't know if I can pull off a Goku, but I'll certainly try. I'd say I've got the lungs, but his personality is something I'd have to work on. I can tell you right now that I have a much better evil voice, so I'd probably be more at home doing people like Vegeta or Boo (my favorite characters, incidentally :P). I read that you aren't dubbing the entire series though, so how much do you exactly plan to do?

As for editing, I can definitely help you out with that as well. I can also clean up audio too, so if you need a final editor or something like that, then I'm your man. The only concern that I would have at the moment is disk space...video files can get pretty large pretty fast. Will the rips be compressed at all?

I guess, in short, I can multi-task. If you'd rather I stick to one thing though, then just let me know.

I am sorry to bombard you with all these questions but I have ONE MORE to ask you, and that is: what naming scheme are you going by? Literal? Translated? I.e., Goku vs. Son Gokuu; Krillin vs. Kuririn, etc. Personally (and this is just my two cents) I think the Viz-style names are pretty cool, like Vegerot and Djinn Boo, because they actually have an apparent meaning to English audiences. Again though, just a suggestion.

Well, whatever you decide to do with me, I really look forward to working with you and the team at large. 8)

Sorry. I was trying to be quick, but i guess I should have explained better.

We're doing DragonBall Z Movie 3: "Battle for Earth" (Our decided title, derived from the Japanese title), and only movie 3. So by "everyone but Goku," I meant "everyone in Movie 3 but Goku." I guess that answers your second question as well.

We need all the help with the technical editing we can get, that's for sure. Audio is pretty important though. Do you have any big fancy software for Audio cleanup? Tenken, our appointed "sound dude," has pretty much a sound studio set up in his from (from what he told me) with Adobe Audition, which from what I've researched about it is exactly what we need. Do you have any similar setup?

As for translations, it was hard, but we managed to strike a balance with things.

- Names - We're going with the logical romanizations of the names, without any extra crap, and for the most part, the most common spellings ("Son Goku," "Kuririn," "Tenshinhan," "Tullece," etc..). It was decided to translate "Shinseiju" (a.k.a. the "Tree of Might"[/i]) to "Sacred Tree," which is pretty much a straight translation of 'Shinseiju." However, we're not using. In a nutshell, we're using the english terms for things (Not to be confused with dub terms). As a result, we're not using honorifics, and are simply translating those as well ("Piccolo-san" --> "Mr. Piccolo," "Goku-sa" --> "Honey" / "Dear," and things like that) The only problem that resulted was with Kaio-Sama, since his honorific is pretty much part of his name. But after some debate, we decided to translate it to "Lord Kaio."

- Attack Names - We're keeping the Japanese names for techniques, with the possible exception of "Spirit Bomb" over "Genki Dama." That's one of the things Shinpan and I have to decide on as we finish the script.

Even if you're not sure whether or not you'd make a good Goku, I encourage you (and anyone else interested) to try out anyway. The more people audition, the better the odds of finding someone who's perfect for it.
