SSj Kaboom wrote:We're doing DragonBall Z Movie 3: "Battle for Earth" (Our decided title, derived from the Japanese title), and only movie 3. So by "everyone but Goku," I meant "everyone in Movie 3 but Goku." I guess that answers your second question as well.
Only Movie 3? Aw, man. It is a good one, but I would've loved to see more stuff. I don't suppose I can convince you to do any other movies or episodes if this first one works out?
We need all the help with the technical editing we can get, that's for sure. Audio is pretty important though. Do you have any big fancy software for Audio cleanup? Tenken, our appointed "sound dude," has pretty much a sound studio set up in his from (from what he told me) with Adobe Audition, which from what I've researched about it is exactly what we need. Do you have any similar setup?
A sound studio? I wish. If Tenken honestly knows what he's doing, then it's probably better off in his hands, but for the record I do have Audition and can work my way around that pretty well.
As for translations, it was hard, but we managed to strike a balance with things.

- Names - We're going with the logical romanizations of the names, without any extra crap, and for the most part, the most common spellings ("Son Goku," "Kuririn," "Tenshinhan," "Tullece," etc..). It was decided to translate "Shinseiju" (a.k.a. the "Tree of Might"[/i]) to "Sacred Tree," which is pretty much a straight translation of 'Shinseiju." However, we're not using. In a nutshell, we're using the english terms for things (Not to be confused with dub terms). As a result, we're not using honorifics, and are simply translating those as well ("Piccolo-san" --> "Mr. Piccolo," "Goku-sa" --> "Honey" / "Dear," and things like that) The only problem that resulted was with Kaio-Sama, since his honorific is pretty much part of his name. But after some debate, we decided to translate it to "Lord Kaio."

- Attack Names - We're keeping the Japanese names for techniques, with the possible exception of "Spirit Bomb" over "Genki Dama." That's one of the things Shinpan and I have to decide on as we finish the script.
Sounds great. May I suggest a few things though? You might want to adapt "Son Goku" to "Goku Son," because family names, which I'm sure you're aware, come last in English. Like Miyazaki Hayao. Gets flipped when we say it. Minor thing, really.

As for the attack names, consistency is key. If it's going to be the Japanese, then they all should be. Though, stuff like "Garlic Gun" roll off the tongue a little bit better than Gyarikku hou; don't you think? Eh, it's your call.
Even if you're not sure whether or not you'd make a good Goku, I encourage you (and anyone else interested) to try out anyway. The more people audition, the better the odds of finding someone who's perfect for it.
Alright; sure thing!

Well, we're not some professional group, or anything. It's just a project that will be lucky if it ever even gets completed. But if it goes well, then who knows what will happen later?

Quite frankly, if it were any other character with any other surname than "Son," then the name order probably would be westernized. But "Son Goku" (and "Son Gohan" and "Son Goten," etc...) is used just about universally.

Same for the attacks. If there's an english version that is practically a perfect translation or just plain easier to say in the "English" version (The Garlic Gun was a good example), then we'll use it. It's not that strict.

This has been answered but I think if you had 'Son' on the end instead of the front people might think it isn't his last name but a title.
Also is the script done or are you still comparing and stuff?

That doesn't make sense... if anything, English-speakers would be more likely to confuse "Son" as a title for Goku in its current position (before his first name). o__O

I really don't care about the order of his personal and family names, though. Like a lot of other people, I'm more used to (maybe even prefer more) "Son Goku" than "Goku Son", though it wouldn't be a big problem for me if someone said his name in first-last order. You potentially get used to it after a while. o.o
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

One quick thing.

I like to think that when this is all over and done with, we could maybe have someone here burn our fandub to DVD-R format that can be watchable on just about any typical Magnavox DVD player or whatnot. We can dispatch one copy for free to each voice actor and maybe even Mike (Vegetto EX) himself since he's been kind enough to allow us to discuss this on his forum. Perhaps even include a couple extras if possible, like our trailer, the original edit dub of Tree of Might (which I could contribute), and probably some small text interviews with those in charge of the technical stuff.

Obviously we'll cross this bridge when we come to it, I just wanted to bring it up, as I'd very much like a personal copy I can enjoy on my home entertainment system. If need-be, I'll contribute some cash to the purchasing of said DVD-Rs, but I personally don't have the proper computer to burn them. I'm sure someone here has the expertise of doing so.

Yeah, something like that.

I know everyone would like to end up with a copy of their own, and such.

I figured at the very least, we'd have the movie put up for download somewhere, so that anyone and everyone involved could download it and then keep in on their PC or make a DVD or do whatever they please.

But actually putting a DVD together, with "extras" and such, isn't too bad an idea either. But yeah, we'll see to that when the time comes.

Mine is done. You can all take a look if ya want, but keep in mind it's not the final script. I'm waiting for Shinpan to finish hers. Once she does, we'll get in touch on YIM or something for a few minutes so we can read through and compare and contrast and all that good stuff.

On that note, does anyone have any suggestions or "don't forget..." things they'd like to point out about the script? Mine has all the dialogue and important or extraordinary sound effects pointed out and listed (i.e., I'm not going to try to list every single little grunt and punch sound effect), but has or can anyone think of anything that I might need to add

Hey kids =)

Nice to see the project still lives. SSj Kaboom, awesome script. I also like some of the enhancements you did to my part of it ^.^ Awesome

I've been working for a while on some stuff, and I have a few results. Our director said the audio would be compilated by having all the dialogue, all the SFX and music sent to the video editors, who would sync it up. But now, I have to say that all the audio should be compiled first and tracks should be made (Two actually, one for dialogue, and possibly two for music and SFX which can be merged). For this, we might need more than one Audio editor. I'm gonna try and help (I'm borrowing Adobe Audition ^.^)

Video-wise, I've got some cool stuff I wanna show you. I'm at school right now so I don't have access to my stuff, but here's one thing you can enjoy!!

EDIT: Never mind, it's working now. Yeah, we really need to get Shinpan to rerecord that sometime when there aren't others at her house. ^_^ She hasn't responded to anything I've said about this; I wonder if she knows she's hired or not...

The final version is gonna have her sing in English, right? It's just...having Shinpan sing in Japanese makes no sense when this is an English audience targeted fandub. I mean if you want it in Japanese, we may as well just use the original version. >>;;

We'll see. If we have her sing in English, then we'd have to have someone compile some translated version of the lyrics that, well, sounds good in English. But like I said, I haven't even gotten any response from her on the issue...

Oh, my bad, I should've said where it is. It's Gohan he's scanning, when the two bumped into eachother. He says the first line as the scouter is working and making noises.

Think about the thousands of websites that host free episode downloads... if those are out there with no one paying attention, then I think these guys are fine.

:idea: And Kaboom, I have an idea that would be pretty cool, but the only problem is that it would take some time, and I'm not too sure if I could pull it off decently enough... but, how about an entirely fan-made "Head-Cha-La"?

Meaning, someone sing on it, but not over an instrumental version, but over a fanmade composition? From me. :D It would take me a while to learn the song, but I could make a solid song out of mostly simulated instruments (I have the technology, and no, I don't meam midi... except it's imposible to simulate a guitar lol), and throw in my own guitar track to it, played by me ofcourse.

What do you think?

"No more legal than making AMVs," to paraphrase someone in an earlier page.

And we're not going to be selling them, or anything. That's where it would get illegal. The most we'll be doing in terms of "distribution" will be either putting the final project up for download for everyone to make DVDs to their own liking, or having someone put together a nice little DVD, making copies, and sending them out only to those who were involved in the project, merely for said folks' own enjoyment and keepsakes.

I'm really sorry it didn't work out that you got to stay on, Dan. I would like to say, though, that you did a great job with the audition (I'm pretty sure all four of us who were deciding the roles think this), and I'm very glad you decided to chip in. It was great to hear to your version of Goku. So thank you. ^^;

Hey, Eclipse, I was wondering: where did you get this particular version of the opening? Is it on the Cha-La Head Cha-La page? And if so, what's the proper title for this particular version?

The reason I ask is that I'd like to do some experimenting on my own with this opening. I'll see if I can't get a hold of Shinpan and link her to it as well so she can record herself singing to it with the right timing. (And while I'm at it, I'll ask her how her version of the script is coming.)

On a side note, Kaboom... what I've read of the script so far is good. I'll be going through it some more during the week. I still can't believe you included the 9,000 joke in there... xDD;
JAPPO wrote:Not that I'm going to report any of you (lol), but is this legal? And if not, do you think you'll get away with it?
If this wasn't legal, I'm sure VegettoEX would have locked the thread a LOOOOONG time ago. In any case, lots of people make their own fan dubs (Timo and Company have been doing it for years, in fact), so I don't see how it could be against the law. It's not like we're licensing it or selling copies of the project to other people, I mean... o__o;

Actually, I had a similar thought to that in an earlier part of the thread. I was thinking something along the lines of an a Capella group, though. :lol: Even asked someone I knew was in a group like that if he wanted to give it a try... didn't exactly work out. D: This could work, though, if everyone agrees on it.
