well pretty much everyone in my household knows about DBZ. my brothers, also 16 and 12, like the show but not as much as they used to back in the day. my mom has never watched any of it, but she knows pretty much all the main characters and what they look like from me buying stuff/talking about it. my dad doesn't really like it, he'll usually call it "jap shit". but whenever i'm watching DBZ in the living room, sometimes he'll come in and just watch it because he has nothing better to do. he actually loves Mr. Satan though and even today still references him. whenever i yawn he says, "HERCUUUUUUUUULE! HA-HA-HA!"

I don't believe that merits a smily face, more like an "Ashamed because my father is a bigot" face.

I agree.

Also, watch the grammar and spelling.

My husband has seen most of Dragonball, but he's not a big fan of it like I am (but he is anime fan).

Back when I lived with my parents, they knew I was into anime, but not too much about the specific shows. Of course the one time they paid attention to what I was watching it happened to be in the middle of a 5 minute power up scene, of which they commented, "wow, isn't this intelligent" :P

Heh...
I think my Dad got into DBZ before me.
And of course the younglings were born in the middle of it *Recalls once at 11:30 when Vegeta is about to kill Dedoria, one-year-old cousin slaps the TV where he is standing*

As for cousin referenced above... basically with him, as far as privaleges are concerned, it's not really "can I play video games" so much as "can I play Dragonball Z games?"
Household name, definitely... Heck, father's wife is the only person in the house who doesn't really care for it, though that's not on a level of negativity, it seems.

And typically if I get a call from a parent while they're driving somewhere, cousin must shout who he's most recently unlocked in one of the DBZ games. Well, this week it was beating Nappa on Sagas...

While Gokuu might not be that big a household name here, 悟空 is. Would be strange for a Chinese family not to know that name ^_~;

As I watched the show since I was little, my parents know the show pretty good. Since I got the Cantonese DVD's of HK some time ago, my dad watches with me regularly actually. Then again, my dad seems to like a lot of anime, as he watches Detective Conan and Ghibli movies with me ^_~

Well back when DBZ was at it's "peak" in the United States, kids would pester their parents for anything DBZ like they would with Pokemon. Needless to say, my parents were familiar with the entire Cell Arc.

Unfortunately that's not true. But what is true is my dad knowing who Goku is (in base form at the very least). I'm not sure if he remembers now. Oh and if there is a video game being played, it falls under the category of either 'Mario' or 'DragonBall Z'. Yes, apparently in my household it's still 1994.

When I lived with my parents they knew what DragonBall was and who Goku was.

When I lived with my ex, she knew what DragonBall was and actually watched some of it with me in raw Japanese (which was funny, because while I knew what was going on I was far from being able to translate).

My girlfriend that I live with now has seen some of the movies (which I subtitled so she could understand) and doesn't get the repetitive formula (she's seen movies 2, 7, 8, 9 and 12...I think...), but assures she'll give it a chance. So, she knows what DragonBall is and who Goku is, though she occasionally confuses the Son family line. She also gets jokingly pissed with me because she knows parts of the Majin Boo saga and other tidbits ;)

My cat...just sits there and stares at the screen. Then he goes in the bedroom and curls up into a ball. He knows his name and what food is, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't know anything about DragonBall ;p

First I'd like to say that this is a great idea for a thread. A gold star for Quantum! 8)

Well, I got my mum into the show around 2000, and she is still as big a fan of DB as me these days. Goku is her favourite too. My dad is clueless about DB and anime period and simply thinks anything he sees is from DB. XDDDDDDD Seriously! I could be watching My Neighbour Totoro and he'd walk by and remark that I'm watching that show "with those teenagers that fight all the time", like he always does. Yes, he's convnced they're all teenagers because they all look too young otherwise to him. Apparently even the non-human looking characters.

My brother knows that I love DB as well as other anime and respects that since the two of us have always been into things that weren't mainstream. He's a Death Metal musician, so ya he's not mainstream! He even knows enough about DB to recognize it from other animes and he bought me an awesome Gohan shirt for Christmas a few years ago that I still treasure. :D

As everyone here already knows, my fiance is Xyex and we met on these very forums, so no question that he's a DB fan. :P

Not to mention my 500k + words worth of Fanfiction. :P

As for my dad, he knows. He can even recognize several of the characters and recall plot elements when I mention them on occasion. Not everything, but enough. Though, he had to put up with me watching movies 4-7, playing B1 - BT, and watching the series/talking about it for years.... so it's not too suprising. XD

My mam normally says,

''You watching Dragonball Zee again. You know your getting a little bit to old watch cartoons''.

My dad,

''Huh what's this rubbish your watching, Dragonball Zed?''.

My sister,

''Huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh'' all the way through the show, mocking the power ups. She's the worst of the lot. She'll just watch it so she can be a pain in the ass. I guess they don't get it at all, but that's too bad... for them. QuantumDestiny, you have done cosplay before, right?

Hey I'd be all for a cosplay wedding since I'm a cosplayer and then I could bully Quantum into it since I'd get to see her in one of her great DB costumes up close. XD Though I know that Rob would never agree to dress up himself. XD And Rob seems to be fixated on the idea of me wearing a replica of Yuna's FFX wedding dress. XD

What, it's not my fault you'd look hot in it.

Anyway, isn't this getting a bit off topic? :P

Gets on topic: I look at this thread now and I'm happy that it is a question. Because once a bad movie comes out, it will be for all the wrong reasons...

Sorry I didnt capitalize and I didn't see any spelling errors in my post. Anyways, it does merit the laughing face because I find it funny. I suppose I failed to mention that he loved Speed Racer as a kid. That's why it deserved

My mom's sort of aware of it. Though one day a few years back she came up to me and talked about Dragonball because she read in some paper about the Viz Manga having "some girl pull her skirt up to show some kid her underwear.'

So I lied and told her "Well, that was Dragonball, I watch Dragonball Z, it's not even made by the same people and it's completely family oriented" and she went "Oh, okay!" and I was left alone.

I get my younger sister to play the Budokai games with me and watch the movies in Japanese with subtitles sometimes. I was happy when my sister was okay with watching it in Japanese because I can't get my friends to watch the Japanese version, just the dub. My dad bugs me while I'm playing videogames sometimes to ask "Is that kamekameha?", because he doesn't know what the series is called, but one day overheard me using a kamehameha in one of the Budokai games. My mom on the other hand only knows the name of the series.
