Deus ex Machina wrote:What this means is that even if they were to re-release the series "remastered" in its proper 4:3 aspect ratio, they would achieve it by zooming the film in past the damaged parts, and then chopping off enough from the left and the right of the film as well to keep everything in proper proportion.
And that's something I did consider before I took the time to write this. Obviously, the ideal situation would be that FUNi would license the DragonBox masters and produce their version from those. However, were I to choose a halfassed 16:9 vs. a halfassed zoomed 4:3...I'd choose the latter (for the series) ;p
Since Spain does seem to actually have the DragonBox masters, I do believe FUNi could acquire them
if they wanted to. If this attempt to 'revolutionize' the series by making it widescreen blew up in their faces, logic tells me they might go back to the drawing board and either license those masters or do a better job at their own remaster.
Am I being too hopeful? Yeah, probably. It's worth a shot though, especially when all it takes is a form letter and a signature

I'm sending the letter, no doubt, but I think I'm going to explicitly ask for dragon box masters. I'm leaving nothing to chance here, heh.

I've been reading this forum for a while now and after reading this topic I decided it was time to post. I think this is an Excellent Idea! I've printed off this letter, made a few tiny modifications, and I'm sending it off today. I urge anyone who is even thinking about it to get this done. Funi has already announced the date for the 2nd DVD set as May 22, so the sooner the better.
Here's to hoping this works!

I've been doing some research on the effectiveness of letter-writing campaigns in reference to stuff like this situation and I think that for this to be really be effective if we got about 1000 letters sent in.
Yes. 1000 letters. So spread this info around!

This has been posted an AnimeonDVD, here and FUNimation's own forums as of last night. In addition, I posted at AnimeNewsNetwork today and the post (which is being moderated because I am a new member) should be available shortly
here.
In addition, I have also emailed the following to Bill Hunt at TheDigitalBits.com:
Bill,
I've recently started a campaign in regards to a new anime DVD release from FUNimation. FUNimation is releasing Dragon Ball Z, an anime from the late 1980's-early 1990's in a remastered format, but they have also cropped the show from its intended 4:3 aspect ratio to a more "cinematic" 16:9.
In response to this, I have posted a letter on numerous forums which is gaining momentum, and I am sending you the link. We are asking for FUNimation to discontinue these releases and return to giving fans the show as it was originally intended to be seen. So far, they have only responded by misusing overscan as a justification and showing us visuals from the Dragon Ball Z movies (animated for 16:9, unlike the series). It's my hope that these letters will be sent with enough volume that FUNimation will be forced to listen.

If you could post this, it'd be greatly appreciated. We want to voice our complaints in a civil and intelligent manner, not only for Dragon Ball Z itself but to discourage them from any further alterations to anime they hold the North American publishing rights to. Any publicity would be of great use.
Thanks,
Corey
I will let you know what reply I get back from him. You guys rock, let's keep this going strong!

On second thought, I think I will write Funimation a letter. However like Corey said, I'm going to mention the Dragon Box film specifically and let them know in no uncertain terms that I'll accept nothing less. If Funimation doesn't want to give it to us, the R2 releases from Toei are an acceptable alternative to me. And I would encourage anyone who plans to write Funimation to tell them the same.
While I'm at it I think I'll mention that I want the proper intro and outro music, or atleast a reversioning of the song like they did for Dragonball. Maybe we could even get them to change the god-awful cover art. I mean it isn't like there isn't hundreds of starving artists out there who can draw as good as Toriyama they can't commission. I've seen some professional looking art in this forum alone.

Done with my letter. Umm... Has anyone noticed that this letter campaign is like the final Genki-dama Goku creates for Majin Buu? The more people that join in on it, the more effective it will be. Vegetto EX care to play the part of Mr. Satan?

I think this sounds like a really good idea. While I have put up with the cropping and tried my best to enjoy it, I want my Dragonball in 4:3. I Don't know if this will work or not, but ill give it a shot and send in a letter(though not till after my test in Psych 101 on Tuesday). I just don't know why they couldnt remaster it as well as the Dragon Box.

You guys, we need to do this. I am really losing hope here. But if everyone pitches in it might be possible.

Toei didn't give them very good sets, as I understand it. That, and they would've had to spend a lot of money. And maybe actually do some work. :P

I was SO disappointed when I found out about this imitation-widescreen shit; therefore I will be sending my letter off very soon.
Now I just have to avoid caving and making a purchase of this conveniently-priced set.

I was at Best Buy today, and I saw... "it" sitting there, and I was so sick-- it's so pretty and tempting.
I want it but I don't. I want to go back and rewatch it... and see it with Steve's kick ass translations, and the original music blaring, and get all caught up in it again.
Yet it is evil. I pulled myself away, panting.
But I knew that I have friends who wouldn't KNOW not to buy it. Who don't read this forum thrice a day (or ever).
We must write more, we must write faster, we must find the seven Dragonballs and get some damn wishes.
I don't care about some glue. I've been watching it with that same glue for a very long time.
I want to see people's heads... and feet. Both. AGH!!
