I loved this chapter! I enjoyed both fights more than in the anime. I would've liked to see the Special Beam Cannon but I don't know if he could use it without killing Frost. I mean it is supposed to be a piercing attack so it probably can't be used to just knock someone out.

I don't mind that the manga has fallen behind as long as it keeps the same quality. I rather wait longer for a higher quality product than get something so rushed and disappointing that I could only watch it once. The fights in the anime were so pitiful. I wish Toei continued on with a movie series like they're doing now with Digimon Tri. Seriously, whose bright idea was it at Toei to reanimate two recent movies in some of the shittiest animation the series has ever seen and then stretch them across 20-something episodes. What little money they spent on these episodes could've went to the budget for the first Champa saga movie. I don't know but I'm happy that Toyotaro takes his time and cares about the manga.

I really like the Goku which is present in the manga. So much more serious and not as dumb as in the anime. Thanks Toyotaro, I will definitely buy the manga when it comes out.I dont want toyotaro's effort go to waste even if it is promotional material. Plus it screams Toriyama when i see/read the manga chapters. In the anime some things come out as very non toriyama esque.

I guess there's not much to be hyped about the manga anymore, now that there are no more spoilers. It's still good for collectors and people that want to catch up on the story without watching the anime.

I just noticed that kurririn is bold in the manga chapter, however in the Anime he has hair. Kurririn in the manga chapter looks exactly like the thrown away key animation frame.

Ugh, what a mess.
Agreed. This really feels like a fan manga i can't take seriously, even more now.
And Piccolo's fight was crap, much better in the anime.

I do mourn the loss of the spoilers. That really only leaves the episode titles/summaries reveals in NewType each month as the remaining source of spoilers. Partly I think they may have only had the spoilers in the first place as a way to drum up interest from those who weren't watching the show during the rehash of BOG and F arcs, as watching TV doesn't earn Shueisha the same kind of money as fans having to buy a magazine monthly does. The manga still feels like a higher quality artwork (as Toyotarou is given way more time to do what he does than Toei gives their animation team) and there's enough differences of minor events to make it its own thing, but I'm still sad the spoilers are gone. Gives me a small bit of worry about just how much plot is left to go for Super (though I'm sure they'll probably keep it going on as long as its profitable).
On hiatus.

True, manga Goku feels a lot more like how Goku should be, while in the anime I feel like watching Luffy instead of Goku. Why cant Toei just copy the manga, fights are better, it feels more Toriyamaish, Goku's Goku and not Luffy.

Damn, Toyotaro has a great eye for fight choreography. I loved that move Frost used firing ki blasts rapid fire at a close range on the fourth page. Given the constraints he's working under, I have to hand it to him for delivering a solid version of the Goku-Frost fight. He even had Chi-Chi rush to Goku's side too - arguably the best character moment she's had in a long time.

Piccolo's bout was fairly basic, but I can't fault it too much given how bland most of the anime version looked. At least Piccolo used his arm-stretching ability in both - a technique I much prefer to recycling the showy Makankosappo.

I think the volume for the manga being called volume 1 suggests there is more to come and since this is monthly and they have about 9 chapters in each, volume 2 wont be untill the end of the year.

Kinda disappointing chapter. The first part of Goku vs. Frost is pretty good but the second part is almost the same as the anime.I also hate how Frost make that Freeza pose.Makes him more look like a Freeza 2.0 even more. The fight between Piccolo vs. Frost is also very short.I prefer the anime version where they make Piccolo as a strategist.

It wouldn't kill him.Freeza literally survived with 90% of his body blown off and still have consciousness with his entire body being chopped. It would only pierce him the same how Piccolo got pierced by Frost in the anime.

I dunno, I think he gets stuck in a rut sometimes and overuses the whole blurry-fast-paced-scrappy-fight-hands thing. I have nothing against his work on the whole, but it just makes me find a deeper appreciation for how Toriyama was able to imaginatively frame so many different action panels over the years.

But it's never been because of the budget... It's because of bad planning and little pre-production time...

Alright guys so which is it?? Because I'm in the school of thought that says the Manga is much closer to the original vision then this anime. I would like know the backgrounds of each views Dragonball experience. I.E. Age, when they first got into Dragonball, and what series, etc.

This chapter was surprising longer than the previous ones, Do you think we will be getting 30 (or maybe slightly more) pages per chapter now(like a proper monthly manga would have) ?
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.

Honestly. I think that both are just different takes on a set of limited instructions. I enjoy and dislike things about both the anime and the manga, but most strongly, I get the impression that Toriyama hasn't provided any real vision per say for this arc - only a loose direction and a couple of character designs.

I would say he provided the skeleton of the story, at least. Let's look at Frost, we can assume with some confidence that Mr.Toriyama input was at least this:

Frost is a phony who fools everybody initially by demonstrating surprising politeness, when pushed into a corner he resorts to foul tactics to achieve victory. He defeats Goku and Piccolo, angering Vegeta. Who stops Frost's from being killed by Champa and takes matters into his on hands.

This is the main story and what pushes forward the plot, I would call this Mr.Toriyama's vision. The little things Toyotaro and Toei add are just meat to the skeleton, to try and make things more interesting in their perspective and without changing the direction of the plot.

Another example, in the manga we have Goku notice something about Hit, in the anime Hit gives us his first reaction ever, by glancing at SSJ Goku. I think Mr.Toriyama wrote something like: an action that hypes Hit's mystery, without specifying.

In my personal opinion, the manga has less additions than the anime. Obviously because it lacks space and therefore has less opportunities to elaborate. The space pirate tidbit, while it could still be mentioned in the manga the way it was played for drama in the anime, looks nothing like something Mr.Toriyama would write, just my impression.

That's true but Piccolo could regenerate. Frost could survive after that but I don't know for how long and if he could eventually regenerate. Is he going to spend the rest of the tournament with a hole in his stomach or multiple holes if Piccolo managed to land more than one hit?
sangofe wrote:But it's never been because of the budget... It's because of bad planning and little pre-production time...
I've heard this explanation before but every time I've asked no one has given a source regarding the budget. I've honestly asked this question maybe 10x already in a different thread. If it's truly not about the budget then that means this information must've come from somewhere so it shouldn't be hard to provide the source.

Also is there a source for the other two issues? Toei chose when to start DBS and to reanimate the two recent movies. It's not like Toei was on the verge of bankruptcy and had no choice but to begin production on DBS at that moment. If there was little time to work on it then Toei could've waited a few extra months. DBZ ended 20 years ago and no one expected a new series to start anytime soon so they could've taken their time with it. The only reason I can think of for why Toei would reanimate the two movies is if they thought "hey we already made our money from the movies so why not reuse those same stories so we can license them again but as a TV show". Digimon Tri and DBS are both animated by Toei and both sequels to classic franchises. The difference is that Digimon Tri is a film series that looks as good or better than the original series while DBS is a TV series with animation worse than the original ever had. The animation style in Digimon Tri is a little different from the original but the fight scenes have been solid and the quality has been consistent throughout the film at least. DBS could've easily been released in the same format with 2-3 lower budget movies a year but instead the more popular and more profitable series gets the worse treatment.

To this point, it wasn't/isn't necessarily about the money, but about the timeslot, and that's something that COULDN'T wait.

With Dragon Ball Kai ending — which, as we know, was a last-minute replacement for the timeslot once Toriko ended (itself a replacement for the previous round of Kai's failure) — Toei was in a panic about what to do to avoid losing the timeslot. They had nothing else that could or would fit.

It was clear how rushed into production Super was from the fact that they literally had nothing to show for it for so long after announcing it, and then on top of that by reusing two movies' worth of material before getting into new story material, and all of it was just a pile of rushed, poor-planning going all the way back to Kai and no sustainable vision.

Digimon Adventure tri. has a slightly longer production schedule. Long enough for Itou Kouji to do all of the battle scenes and BANK animation pretty much alone. It otherwise isn't particularly high-quality, certainly no more than a good television series schedule.

Dragon Ball Super is rushed out the shitter with staff outright complaining publically that there's no time to work on their shots. Money has to be wasted hiring new staff to redo shots from scratch just to appease whoever is changing the scripts, storyboards and key animation at the last second. Dragon Ball Super is likely spending far more money than it should be just to do what whoever keeps changing the plot wants all while episodes end up looking worse than your average kids cartoon.

This is a very good point he will survive but not for long so he had to cheat to stay alive as well in theory.
