It's been a while since I did them, but I think more or less followed Ashura's guide here on Kanzenshuu: Color Correcting the Dragon Box - 3 Part Spectacular. In addition to his guide, I think I also fiddled with levels and the gradiation curve a little bit. I also think I added just a touch of edge sharpening to remove some of the line blurriness.Bansho64 wrote:Those were some great remasters MrWalnut4! I saw a couple of your other videos and I really like all of them. Especially the one after Vegeta's Final Flash. How did you go about remastering the footage?

Honestly, this thread would be more interesting and have a place to go if Enigmo talked about what his actual methods were vs. just posting his screenshots. At this point it's just went around in circles about 3 or 4 times with people arguing about sharpening, etc.
If I had time I'd update my guide since it's a bit old at this point. That said, it's still got some good info in it I think. I'm glad people still get some use out of it.

revistting this bc i made an amv and imo the nappa scenes resemble the level sets https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h73jgK9JKtc idk what you'll think though. unfortunately the CC didn't work so well with the android 19 scenesBansho64 wrote:Well since this is about fan remasters, I was wondering would it be possible for someone to be able to remaster footage just like Funimation did for the level sets? I'm not sure what programs or equiment they used but it would be amazing if someone finished up where Funimation left off.

It's still a good method for beginners to help them get their hands wet with stuff like this, a lot of people have posted their own takes on the idea with the results and improved methods being pretty impressive, heck even I'm still using it to try out new techniques and theories out to try and get better results, also I might as well talk about upscaling a little since that was also brought up, you guys might want to have look into this http://waifu2x.udp.jp/ I've done a few tests with some DBOX shots in the past using this and I thought both the 2x with no noise reduction and the 2x with medium noise reduction results looked decent (there are also downloadable versions that can be used offline).Ashura wrote:If I had time I'd update my guide since it's a bit old at this point. If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out.

that's pretty cool, for low-res pictures. does the downloadable version work with videos?
Re: What do you guys think of fan "remasters"?
I tried a new degrain method today. The one I did, in the original thread post, was just a quick way--this way doesn't give it the "muddy"/"waterpaint" look.
To me it looks okay. Under the same high-quality encoding presets, a 50-second AMV of mine with grain was 138MB (the encoder detected the grain and gave it a high bitrate), whereas the AMV without grain was 50MB. So, the degrain is pretty ideal for internet uploads, especially onto YouTube, where they process the video at a low birate and the grain just looks like mpeg noise. But obviously, I think there have been some details here and there that have gone away.

Not in the conventional way, waifu2x was designed primarily with image enhancement in mind, so what you'd need to do is export all of your video to a lossless image sequence using something like virtualdub, and figure out a way to use the downloadable version to batch process the entire image sequence at once and then import the newly upscaled image sequence back into virtualdub and export that to your liking (the only drawback to this method is it takes loads of space to store the lossless image sequences, but I don't mind it because it gives me plenty of freedom to work around the limitations I have).Enigmo wrote:that's pretty cool, for low-res pictures. does the downloadable version work with videos?

i saw on one of their pages of how to do videos, but didn't bother reading it.superrayman3 wrote:Not in the conventional way, waifu2x was designed primarily with image enhancement in mind, so what you'd need to do is export all of your video to a lossless image sequence using something like virtualdub, and figure out a way to use the downloadable version to batch process the entire image sequence at once and then import the newly upscaled image sequence back into virtualdub and export that to your liking (the only drawback to this method is it takes loads of space to store the lossless image sequences, but I don't mind it because it gives me plenty of freedom to work around the limitations I have).Enigmo wrote:that's pretty cool, for low-res pictures. does the downloadable version work with videos?
thank you, because i think i will keep this tool in mind if i ever wanna quickly upscale a picture, but for DBZ i don't think i'll be using it.
Dragon Ball Remaster
Okay, so I worked on original DB, and here are the results:
Now, because of the bluer sky and yellower skin, you might think this has been done by FUNimation, already, but FUNi's are quite different because of how they change the red gi.
At first I was having that problem: the gi was turning bright orange, like they are in DBZ. But, I somehow managed to overcome it and turn it, not into red, but into a much darker orange that resembles Toei's VOD thumbnails.
Now...the real problem with my CC is that I get all these bad pixels--the compression that happens within flat colours, which is usually very hard to see, becomes visible. This happens because I want to brighten up the dark colours. This usually makes it more detailed-looking, and there are actually more visible details other than the compression. This problem probably wouldn't arise if I was using a well-transferred film source, but yeah...it reveals the DVD compression, and I guess the grain plays a part, too. Look at Roshi's outfit.
If you don't believe there is more detail coming out, and instead this is just unnecessary brightening up, look at Tien's pants and Yamcha's hair in this:

Re: Enigmo's Remasters
I'm not sure how it happened exactly, but some of your screenshots look as though they have been bob-deinterlaced rather than being properly IVTC'd. You're losing vertical resolution that way.

i don't really mess too much with encoding so don't know what you're talking about lol. is it apparent in every screenshot i've posted here? if so, you're probably right
edit: http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/166244 this is the same deinterlacing i've applied to everything shown here
